The Armenian Church

‘The Armenian church is the birthplace of my spirit,
shadowed and illuminated like a cavern;
but vast and vaulted, its entrance welcomes guests
to the wide sanctuary where the altar floats
in silence in the distance like a mighty ship.

Even with my eyes closed I can see it,
its Christ's face bright as a child's.
When I breathe in, I breathe its holy incense
Smoking on its altar, its sturdy walls quaking
with old and stormy prayers.

‘The Armenian church js the unyielding fortress
of our fathers’ faith. They raised it
stone by stone out of the earth.
They lowered it dewfall by dew from the heavens,
And they were buried in hushed stillness there.

The Armenian church is the tapestry curtain
behind which God Himself descends
into the chalice. And before which my nation
bows its head for communion with the wine
and life-giving bread of our past.

Against storms, our church is haven and harbor.
Against the cold night, itis fire and flame.
It is the shaded forest in the heat of day
where lilies flower watered by sharagans.

‘The Armenian church knows the secret road to heaven
hidden under every stone, For the Armenign spirit
and body itis the shining armor, its crosses swords;
its bells reverberate with the victory we know is ours.

THE ARMENIAN CHURCH

By Vahan Tekeyan

The Armenian Church is the birthplace of my soul.
Like a vast grotto it is simple and profound, dark and light –
With its hospitable court, ample tribune, and hushed altar
Standing in the distance as though it were a ship afloat.

The Armenian Church I see with my eyes closed.
I breathe and hear it through the clouds of incense
Which rise towards the feet of the Infant Jesus,
And through the fervent prayers vibrating its walls.

The Armenian Church is the mighty fortress of my forefather’s faith.
Raised by them from the earth stone by stone,
And descended from heaven, a dewdrop and a cloud at a time.
In it they unfolded themselves peacefully and humbly.

The Armenian Church is a great embroidered tapestry
Behind which the Lord descends into the chalice, and
Before which all my people stand with bowed heads
To commune with the past through life-giving bread and wine.

The Armenian Church is a peaceful haven across turbulent seas.
It is fire and light in the cold of night;
It is shady forest in the scorching midday sun
Where lilies bloom by the River of Hymns.

The Armenian Church, beneath every stone in its floor.
Holds a secret passage leading up to Heaven.
The Armenian Church is the shining armor of Armenia’s soul and body.
Her crosses rise to protect her;

Her bells ring forth and her song is always Victory.

IRAINS, MSON…
It rains, my son… Autumn is wet,
Wet as the eyes of a sad deceived love…
Go, shut the window and the door
And come sit beside me in stately
Silence… It is raining, my son…
Does it at times rain in your soul as well?
Does your heart feel cold and do you shiver
Thinking of the bygone bright sunshine
Now beyond the shut door of dire fate…?
But, you cry, my son… In the dusk, sudden
Heavy tears tumble down your eyes…
Cry the unredeemable tears of innocence,
Cry oblivious, my sad unaware son,
You poor prey of life… Cry to grow up…
……………………Vahan Tekeyan
Translated by Tatul Sonentz

TO THE READER

My soul belongs to me no matter how I offer pieces,
on every page to strangers passing by.
My soul belongs to me. No one can recognize it whole
with its formidable darkness and blinding lights.

Like the unstripped mine for gold, coal, or perhaps lead,
the dredging has bared only the first layer
of joys, and the black floodwaters of pain.
A deeper volcano rumbles underneath it all.

My soul is that mine, only partially excavated.
Who knows how many new pains will burrow
and shaft, blast by blast? It belongs to me.

Today I regret that so many samples were passed
to onlookers when I intended all the while
to give it whole, to only one or two.

Sacred Wrath: The Selected Poems of Vahan Tekayan, translated by Diana Der Hovanessian and Marzbed Margossian. Ashod Press, NY, 1982

THE PATH by Komitas
The narrow path crawling,
Shivering underneath the feet,
At the end of which
The Tree of Life has grown, shimmering...
What a big heart it has
This road to Eternity
This path for people, plants and beasts alike,
This path of winged birds...

"Forgetting" by Vahan Tekeyan

Forgetting. Yes, I will forget it all.
One after the other. The roads I crossed.
The roads I did not. Everything that happened.
And everything that did not.

I am not going to transport anymore,
nor drag the silent past, or that "me"
who was more beautiful and bigger
that I could ever be.

I will shake off the weights
thickening my mind and sight,
and let my heart see the sun as it dies.

Let a new morning's light open my closed eyes.
Death, is that you here? Good Morning.
Or should I say Good Dark?

Translated by Diana Der Hovanessian and Marzbed Margossian

OLVIDANDO

Olvidar.

Vahan Takeyan: The Country of Dust

Small. Miniaturized, yet you insist
on shaking your canyons and cliffs with huge
spasms as if you were the centre of the earth
and the magnet that draws out and fills every sea.
So small. A corner. Not even a corner.
Scattered points, dispersed and dispersing lines
of fallen walls, walls you imagine the palace
you once raised from this mantle of dust.
How can you dream of old architecture
today when every edifice caves in
to make way for new shapes?
Any shock can erase you forever and no eye
will even blink. Yours alone the concern. But hope
rises like the sun. Accumulate. Dust consolidates into stone.

Translated from the Armenian by Diana Der Hovanessian and Marzbed Margossian.

Grief by Siamanto

You, stranger soul mate
Who leaves behind the road of joy,
listen to me.
I know your innocent feet are still wet with blood. Foreign hands have come and yanked out
the sublime rose of freedom
which finally bloomed from the pains of your race.
Let its divine scent intoxicate everyone,
Let everyone—those far away, your neighbor, the ungrateful, come and burn incense
before the goddess of Justice
that you carved from the stone with your hammer.
Proud sowers, let others reap with your scythes
the wheat that ripens in the gold earth you ploughed. Because if you are chased down by raw Evil,
don't forget that you are
to bring forth the fruitful Good.
Walk down the avenues of merriment
and don’t let the happy ones see in your eyes
that image of corpse and ash.
Spare the passerby, whether a good man or a criminal, because Armenian pain
rises up in the eye’s visage.
As you walk through the crossroad of merriment
don’t let a speck of gladness or a tear
stain grief’s majesty.
Because for the vanquished, tears are cowardly
and for the victors, the smile is frivolous, a wrinkle.
Armenian woman, with veils darkening you like death.
You, young man with native anguish running down your face,
walk down roads without rage of hate and exclaim: what a bright day,
what a sarcastic grave digger...
What a mob, what dances, what joy
and what feasts everywhere...
our red shrouds are victory flags.
the bones of your pure brothers are flutes... with them others are making strange music.
But don’t shudder, unknown sister
or brother of fate.
As you study the stars,
take heart, go on.
The law of life stays the same
human beings can’t understand each other.
And this evening before the sunset
all of you will go back to your houses, whether they are mud or marble,
and calmly close the treacherous
Shutters of your windows.
shut them from the wicked
Capital, shut them to the face of humanity,
and to the face of your God...,
Even the lamp on your table
will be extinguished
by your soul’s one clear whispers.

Click here for the audio clip I loved by Vahan Tekeyan read by Lola Koundakjian.

I LOVED

I loved but no one
I loved new
why and how.
Who knows how to read a heart?

Those who gave me
the greatest joy
and sharpest pain
do not even know me now.

Love for me was like a river
taking its uncontainable flow
from the distant mountain snow.
The mountain did not even notice.

snow was gone.
Love for me was an unopened door,
a secret garden filled with blossoms
never rained upon.

And if anyone noticed my love
as smoke rising
to the sky,
its fire was never seen.

For I loved
but none I loved knew
how and why.
Who knows how to read a heart?

Click here for the audio segment Happiness read by Lola Koundakjian

THE MEMORY OF YOU

The memory of you tonight moves me almost to tears
as if it secretly returned
to find its nesting place
inside my heart, after these years.

Your image in my eye, your voice inside my ear
and in my blood's own pace
the heave of your sweet breath -- I burn
as if you touched my face.

Our old hours return, one by one,
a caravan of stars whose light
I thought had past.

Their memory makes me so profligate,
so rich, I could share their wealth
to brighten all the wretched of this earth.

Click to hear Vahan Tekeyan's romantic poem, "Your Name" read by Lola Koundakjian.

YOUR NAME
By Vahan Tekeyan

Why can’t I write your name upon this page
And declare to the world how I loved you?
In secret, I whisper its two syllables,
And it seems to me a rare book of love...
Why can’t I write your name upon this page?

Now, parted with you, I have only your name,
A sweet ethereal kiss upon my lips.
At night, in the intimate solitude of my room,
I murmur your name and you appear before me...
Now, parted with you, I have only your name...

Your beauty and my love invented your name...
My heart in endless palpitation spells it out forever,
Though I have always known you by heart,
I wonder if the name was yours before I knew you.
It is your beauty and my love that invented your name...

No, I cannot—do not want to tell the world.
With its two syllables I want to anoint my life
And when the last ray of my last sun subsides,
I’ll greet the dawn of my death with your name on my lips.
No, I cannot and do not want to reveal it to the world.
