Vittoria Aganoor: PASQUA ARMENA

vedo dai nuovi farisei. Raccolto
hanno il fango a scagliartelo sul volto;
per dissetarti apprestano il veleno.

Ma se l' insazïata orda ferina
sulle tue membra flagellate e grame
oggi rinnova la tortura infame

del Golgota, la tua Pasqua è vicina.

ASA Announces 6th “Arthur Halvajian Memorial” Armenian Poetry Competition

Rhode Island —The Armenian Students' Association, Inc. announces the start of its 6th annual poetry competition. Once again, the ASA, Inc. is partnering with the Armenian Poetry Project for the writing competition named in honor of the late Arthur Halvajian, a former trustee who led its Board in sponsoring the first competition. The 2016 competition opens April 1st and the deadline for submissions is May 28, 2016. The competition winners will be announced by the jury in June 2016.

"Over the past five years we have received hundreds of entries from across North America and continue to be impressed with the creativity, quality, and range of poems. We look forward to reaching out to even more communities in the coming months," said Alice Movsesian, a member of the ASA, Inc. Board of Trustees as well as its liaison to the competition’s organizing committee.

ASA Board of Trustees secretary M. Manoog Kaprielian sees the poetry competition as a particularly meaningful window of expression for Armenians who endured the pain of survival as refugees out of Azerbaijan and Syria, settling recently throughout the United States and Canada. “We will do all that we can to reach out wherever they may be”, stated Kaprielian.

The Armenian Poetry Project, led by poet Lola Koundakjian, is a research and documentation site for 19th to 21st century Armenian poems and related topics. Currently containing over 2500 poems, it is celebrating its 10th anniversary this year. APP has a worldwide following and releases poems through RSS feeds, Twitter and podcasting.

All individuals of Armenian descent, residing in the United States and Canada are invited to submit their work, in English or Armenian, for the competition. Entries should be e-mailed by May 28, 2016 to ArmenianPoetryProject@gmail.com with the subject heading "Halvajian ASA/APP Poetry competition". Only one UNPUBLISHED poem per individual may be submitted.

The competition groups submissions into three categories; students (ages 12-17), college age (ages 18-22), and adult (ages 23 and older). A top prize will be awarded for each of the categories in the amounts of US $75 (students), $125 (college age), and $300 (adult).

Each poem submitted for the competition must be accompanied by the author's full name, age, home address/telephone number. Students must include school name and sponsoring teacher's telephone number.

You can learn more about the Armenian Poetry Project by visiting http://armenian-poetry.blogspot.com.

The Armenian Students' Association of America, Inc. encourages educational pursuits by Armenians in America and the raising of their intellectual standards, providing financial assistance in the form of scholarships to deserving Armenian students, developing fellowship among them, cultivating in them the spirit of service in the public interest, and acquainting them and the entire American community with Armenian culture.

Paylag Khatchadourian (1906-1991): Farewell Aleppo

You are an Arab city,
My honorable birthplace.
My eyes opened and I saw you, I knew there was no other city.

My second fatherland,
With your Syrian people.
You became the good protector to the Armenian You gave us bread and shelter.

We have lived always together, As brothers Armenian to Arab. We have worked always together, As a Syria without guile.
The day of our separation is near,
O altar of the light of my childhood. We shall ever remember you,
O altar of the hope of my childhood.

Etchmiadzin’s* carillon rang out, Calling her children to her.

I am parting from you with love, City of Aleppo, farewell.

* Etchmiadzin is reference to the famed cathedral located in the historic Armenian city of Vagharshapat

Notes
Armenians have chanted in Aleppo's Forty Martyrs Armenian Apostolic Church (Armenian: Surb Karhasnits) since it was constructed in 1429. An ancient rest stop along the Christian pilgrimage route from Western Armenia to Jerusalem, Aleppo hosted hostels, churches, and a small but well- anchored Armenian community. During Ottoman rule, Aleppo was a stable, religiously tolerant city located along the Silk Road. Aleppo was home to diverse ethno-religious communities and international merchants who prospered in its famous covered market known for its silk, wool, carpets, and other artisanal wares.
Aleppo’s Armenian population swelled in the late 16th and early 17th centuries, prompted by failed crops in the eastern Ottoman provinces, greater economic opportunities abroad, and the catastrophic destruction of the Armenian trading city of Julfa by Safavid Shah Abbas during a war with the Ottomans. To service the expanding Christian community, Muslim and Christian donors supported the renovation of the Byzantine-era district that would become Aleppo’s Christian quarter, Judayda, where the Forty Martyrs Church is located. At the turn of the 17th century—referred to as the “Armenian Golden Age”-- Armenians held extraordinary political and economic power in the city. A donation by Khoja Sanos of Julfa, a prosperous merchant and head of the Aleppo customs house, financed the first major renovation of Forty Martyrs Church in 1616.
Situated next to Forty Martyrs is the Armenian church of the Holy Mother of God (Surb Astuatsatsin), which was converted into the Zarehian Museum in 1991. Historians believe the church was originally built as a prayer hall during the 12th century Crusades. The space was formally renovated into a church in 1455 with a donation by Khoja Maqsud, another wealthy Armenian merchant from Julfa. The Forty Martyrs Church, which today shares a common courtyard with the Zarehian Museum, is located across the street from the Armenian prelacy, which serves as the central institution for Syria’s Armenian community. Along the same alley in Judayda are churches representing the Maronite Catholic, Greek Orthodox, and Syriac Catholic Christians of Aleppo.
Aleppo's Armenian population was in decline even as the Hamidye Massacres (1894-1896) brought more Armenians from the eastern provinces of the Ottoman Empire seeking refuge. Later, during the Armenian Genocide (1915), the Ottoman government began deporting the Greek population and subsequently launched a campaign of genocide against the Armenian inhabitants in the eastern provinces. Hundreds of thousands of Armenians were deported to Aleppo before being pushed to the killing fields east in Der Zor. The Ottoman ethnic cleansing campaign expanded to include other Christian groups, including 275,000 Syriac Christians who perished, in an event remembered as the “Sayfo (“the sword”).”
A total of 1.5 million Armenians were killed during the genocide, an event that the Turkish government continues to deny. The ethnic cleansing of Anatolian Christian populations occurred in provinces where they numbered upward of 25-30% of the population, thereby Islamicizing the emerging Turkish state. By the 1920s, 100,000 Armenian refugees, along with surviving Assyrians, settled in Syria, most of them in Aleppo. Building new lives in post-war Aleppo, refugee camps evolved into vibrant Armenian neighborhoods and reinvigorated Syria’s Armenian population.
Syria's current civil war has endangered all of its Christian communities and made large parts of the city uninhabitable and unsafe for all Aleppans, regardless of creed. Before the war, Syria’s Armenian population was approximately 50,000; within three years, the population was roughly halved. In October 2012, St. Kevork church, a structure that dates back to 1937, was burned in the Armenian neighborhood of Nor Kyugh (Maydan). 2015 was ushered with the bombing of St. Rita Armenian Catholic Cathedral in Tillel, just a hundred feet from the Armenian Prelacy in Judayda. What remains of Aleppo's historic Armenian community is likely to be a shadow of its pre-war size when the war subsides.
The dialect of Western Armenianspoken by the Armenians of Aleppohas been designated an endangered language by UNESCO, and is expected to go extinct in the next 100 years. These chants are the sounds of the disappearing Armenian community in Syria, making this pre-war recording even more valuable as it documents the songs of a vanishing culture.
Info about the Album Name
The Forty Martyrs Church is named after 40 Roman soldiers who converted to Christianity only to be punished by Roman authorities in 320 A.D. According to legend, he authorities forced the soldiers to strip naked and stand in a freezing lake overnight. The next morning, the soldiersbarely alive after enduring the bitter coldwere burned alive. Early Christians memorialized these soldiers for their bravery in the face of persecution, making it an especially apt metaphor for the current violence in Syria.

Keith Garebian: THE WALLS OF DIYARBEKIR

Old walls, volcanic rock.
A shape of containment,
relics and small lives
cloistered in silence.
Rock by black rock, they lived in this place
which closed them in. Old walls infested
with snakes, scorpions, and elegies
of spider webs.

Always hard
not to have a safe place,
to feel cut off
because your spire, Sourp Giragos,
stands taller than a minaret.

A foreign people, these ancestors
for one who is not hemiserim.1
But they have something to tell me
even when their stories are evasive
because they can’t name all
that was destroyed of their race.

Stonework of penetrable dreams
at any view.
Stone, metal, and spirit
locked in spirals
diminishing together.
On this side of silence
there are no smiles.

Yet we must dream above
the fallen bell-tower,
the eight-sided clock
with bell cast in Istanbul.
Dream of poems in these walls
where one sad person talked to another,
songs surging out of souls
singing to the moon
after slow sunsets.

This poem was recently shortlisted for the GritLit Poetry Contest run by the Hamilton Arts Council in Canada. It will be included in Mr. Garebian's next poetry collection, currently entitled Armenian Elegies.

Marina Manoukian: Untitled

I.

It’s easy not to think about when you’re not thinking about it. But once the door cracks open and you snap awake to someone coming in at five in the morning, it’s hard not to indulge. Poems don’t write themselves as you get fucked. Though it’d be nice to be able to write and fuck. Who knows where the mind could wander to with such distractions? Imagine the words lettered right before those electric shocks come. Writing’s just like fucking. When it’s good you’re at once trying to escape and pull it into you ineffably. It’s overwhelming and exhausting and you want to beg it to stop but each pulse leaves one craving harder and deeper. A subtle balance between letting yourself be ravaged and giving it everything—bursts of energy coming and going. The need for a cigarette afterwards. I was once told that was cheesy by a nonsmoker. And of course, when you’re not thinking about it, it’s easy not to think about.

II.

The question of “are you satisfied”

Why does satisfaction imply a cessation of what brought one to that state? If you’re satisfied with life are you done? Of course you’re satisfied. That’s why you immediately want more.

One fuck, one paragraph. You gasp and brace yourself for what’s to come, and you’re satisfied with the results. But runaway blank space on the page teases just as much as a naked body having done its job. You want more. Who wouldn’t?

Shamiram Sevag: LE DERNIER MOT

Et quand je partirai
Pour le dernier voyage
Quel mot je noterai
Sur ma dernière page ?
Quel mot je choisirai
Le plus fou ? Le plus sage ?
Est-ce que j'exploserai
Rugissant de rage
Ou bien je me plierai
A ce fatal passage ...
Je me dénuderai
Dans un ultime message
Ou je me masquerai
D'un savant maquillage
Mille pensées surgiraient
Toute une foule de visages
Peut-être j'emporterai
L'inconnu de passage.
Le destin choisirait
L'instant et le rivage
Qui marquera l'arrêt
De tous les bavardages.
Est-ce sans peur, sans regrets
Ou cruel arrachage ?
Est-ce que je serai prêt
Ou surpris en sauvage ?
Mes pensées, mes secrets
Seront-ils du voyage ?
Ou mon silence serait
A jamais sans partage ...
Partirai-je en secret
Ou bien selon l'usage
Seul Dieu me guiderait
Pour mon plus beau voyage
Et je m'effacerai
Dans l'océan de nuages
Sans peur, sans regrets
Sans laisser de message ...
" J'ai vécu " suffisait

Point final sur ma page.

Shamiram Sevag: LES DERACINES

Nous les déracinés,
arrachés de nos terres
des siècles el des années,
refusons de nous taire.

Nous les déracinés,
implantés dans le Monde
partout nous sommes nés,
nos racines sont profondes

Nos racines arrachées
à nouveau s'enracinent
sans jamais se détacher
de nos vraies origines.

Des siècles et des années
nous qui savons souffrir,
bien que déracinés,
refusons de mourir.

Shamiram Sevag, the daughter of Roupen Sevag, was born in 1914 and lives in France. In 1995, she published a volume in memory of her father entitled Message à mon père: Rouben Sevag

Michael E. Stone: Winter in Armenia

The land has put on winter.
The poplars are naked.
Rounded mountain tops
snow white,
peek above
black ploughed fields
on rolling hills.

Scattered obsidian glints
catch the low western sun,
sparkle like Christmas lights,
on and off, on and off,
as the road winds.

The spirit of mist
descends
far off.

Quote for the month of December 2015

Medieval Mystic Poet Mkrtich Naghash (c. 1394-c. 1475) was Archbishop of Diarbekr.
In [his] love songs, the Rose and the Nightingale whisper to each other fiery love speeches complaining of each other's cruelty. Then they admonish each other not to let their passion consume them, and sing each other's praises.

A video treat for Christmas, enjoy!

Hrand Nazariantz, "Tre Poemi". Poeta bilingue armeno. Tre poemi tradusse dall'armeno. C. Giardini1924

(for the Armenian original, please click here)

Helene Pilibosian (1933-2015)

It is with great sadness that we relay the news of the death of author, editor and publisher Helene Pilibosian whose work appeared on numerous occasions in the pages of the Armenian Poetry Project. She died from complications after surgery for a brain tumor. Her son, Bob Sarkissian, will continue managing Ohan Press.

Helene was born in Boston, Massachusetts, to survivors of the Armenian Genocide. After graduating from Watertown High School, she attended Harvard University and graduated with a degree in humanities in 1960, before marrying Hagop Sarkissian. She was the first woman editor of The Armenian Mirror-Spectator. She was 82 years old and is survived by her husband, children and grandchildren.
