The Swallow

The swallow slowly builds her nest,
Her voice unravelling.
With every twig, with every leaf,
She yearns for last year’s home.

She remembers her young chicks,
Hungry for her return.
A wolf snatched the chicks away,
And devoured their tender flesh.

But the swallow again builds her nest,
Her voice unravelling.
With every twig, with every leaf,
She remembers last year’s song.

New Volume of Poetry by Arpine Konyalian Grenier

NeO Pepper Press proudly presents:

Arpine Konyalian Grenier's Part, Part Euphrates

With an eternal lack of selfhood and longing for ancestry I am creeping along the sidelines of rhetoric and process hoping for an outcome that transcends my ability to determine the good in it.
—AKG

What better way to conclude a successful year than with Arpine Konyalian Grenier’s Part, Part Euphrates.
Yet if forced to specify what kind of a punctuation mark Part, Part Euphrates represents, we would face a hard choice: is it a question mark, period, or an ellipsis?
Maybe it’s all three, and more, yes, that’s it—Part, Part Euphrates is a paper-and-ink poetical hyperlink conflating space with thought and time with word in a unique expression mirroring the many-sidedness of the world.
Arpine’s verse blossoms in unexpected ways, scaling like ivy the crumbing walls of the idea that universal understanding rest on the dominance of a single language—offering in return an endless game of meaning and interpretative opportunity.

What others have said:
“… heavily impressionistic and often surrealistic, reckless talent... a unique voice,”
John A. Greppin, Ph. D., Professor of Linguistics, Cleveland State U.
“Konyalian Grenier gives provocative expression to personal experience in a voice unique and forceful,”
Frederick M. Swensen, Ph. D., Professor Emeritus, California State U, Long Beach.
“… varied registers sources and textures of language… provocative and
engaging… sublime,”

Heather Fuller, Washington Review.
“… long list of strengths: the quiet (Dickinsonian) gift of knowing all about nature, the explosive gift of shooting words at the page in glee, the gift for metaphor and a complimentary one that knows how to organize sprawling material, riding the herd as we used to say out west. always coming up with what Eliot might have called one's objective correlative... she takes us out of our provincial concentration on American life to encompass broader social and geopolitical issues, tying them cleverly to the personal - relationships histories feeling,”
Kevin Killian, Krupskaya.

Arpine Konyalian Grenier holds graduate degrees from the American University of Beirut and the Milton Avery Graduate School of the Arts, Bard College, New York. Her work has appeared in How2, Columbia Poetry Review, Sulfur, The Iowa Review, Phoebe, Fence, Verse, Big Bridge and elsewhere, including several anthologies. She has repeatedly been chosen finalist for the National Poetry Series and the Greg Grummer Award, and has authored two volumes of poetry.

Arusyak Ohanyan:

Click to hear
Անհրաժեշտություն read by Narine Karamyan.

Sevana Bagdasarian: Chorale

To the spirit of Dikranouhi and to all women who have
been forced to the ground on the banks of the Euphrates

There is death in this river
you can hear it sing.

The people dancing
or watching the great fish
swim in massive schools
cannot hear it.
They have not been made to listen.

I dance
and swim backwards
splashing water
on my face

for downstream
the women's bodies are found

naked and nameless
on the river's shore.

If I could
I would drain the death from this river.
I would shower it like rice
over a bride,
but today the mountain hands
disfigured and defaced
as if saying
it to has had enough.

My hand molts wet silt
touch homeland touch earth
They say if you are lost
touch earth.
If the duduk's wind changes direction
or if you forget to swim
touch earth.

Her obsidian hair reaches
downstream
becoming tributaries
she won't know which to choose.

I close my eyes to push
back her memory
but there is no stopping it.
No force to mind
no threat of retaliation.

Only the song
of the big dipper breaking
into a million-and-a-half pieces
falling, scattering
and the sound
that only those who have heard
a star's dancing fall
can hear.

Gregory Djanikian: FIRST SUPPER IN THE NEW COUNTRY

Uncle Hagop was grilling kebab
in the fireplace, sitting on a crate,
basting each morsel of lamb
with yogurt and oil.

"This is for your mother," he was saying,
as he drew the brush along a skewer,
"and this is in memory of your grandfather
who swims with the fishes."

There was hardly any furniture,
all our rugs had been left behind,
there were so many echoes.

Outside, it was Pennsylvania
heavy with snow, the sidewalks
had disappeared, streets had become
a mirage of dunes.

"Uncle Hagop," I said, "the place
is filling up with smoke." Our eyes
had begun tearing, we were opening windows,
flapping towels by the front door.

"Look at these beauties," he said, turning
the onions on their sides, singing
O rise up my Armenian heart
above the jeweled Caucasus!

There was nothing to do but shrug helplessly
as the neighbors passed by the door
looking in, amazed to see something
like a campfire in the middle of the city
and Uncle Hagop lifting up his glass

to the sheep herders of Yerevan
and the hardy grasses and grape vines
rooted deep in the rocky soil.

My grandmother was looking heavenward,
my sister was asking if we could return
to normal, we were all wiping our eyes,
waiting for sirens or the eviction notice

and Uncle Hagop was singing another chorus
about the heartland, forking the lamb
to its soft pink center, and bringing
platefuls of it like an offering
to the makeshift table

where we sat down, raising
a toast to the old life and new,
eating and saying as we ate
how everything had been done
to a turn, how really there was
no other way of doing it.

Diana Der-Hovanessian: Not Meeting Mark Gavoor

On the dock at Camp Hayastan
the summer I had gone to teach
the English course on Armenian
poets, I saw you sprawled
on the gray wooden pier. It was
noon and hot. I sighed at
the sight of so many water lilies
blanketing the skin of Uncus Pond.
"You can't pick them. They are
protected," you warned.
Unlike us, I thought. Anyone
who picks these lilies drowns.

But no need to worry. I am not
one who picks anything. Unfortunately
things pick me.

Suddenly you leaped up saying
"Oh, I know you. I hope
you will have a chance to look
at my poems. My name is Mark."

You moved like all the summer
boys I had known in my youth.
You spoke with the voice of all
the mountain poets I had never
heard in our own tongue.

You smiled with the eyes of the son
I would never have. "Mark?
Mark Gavoor?"

"No," you answered and faded into
the noon light. The lilies shrivelled.
Ice formed on Uncus Pond.

Men from Franklin in rough coats cut
it into blocks to pack into straw
on sleighs. Uncus Indians peered
through the trees.

You and I left to cross two continents.
I to say old poems, you to cut them
into new shapes.

Click to hear the audio clip of today's poem read by Lola Koundakjian.

Esther Heboyan: PROVENCE-PARIS

Outside darkness
flows
swaying along
railways
i so wish
i could hold it
inside
all lights
grate
like a razor’s edge
whereas
across the aisle
lovers
grasp hands
kiss lips
oblivious to
un-lovers
you so wish
you could love too
but instead
eyes closed
we look away
to search
that space
replete with silences
and fidget
in our seats
to undo
our redundant selves
still
on the station platform
you may have said
shall we meet again
i don’t remember
saying
love trains are
so scarce these days

Alan Whitehorn: Hayastan

We journey in search of a path,
back to Ararat,
back to my ancestors' village,
along centuries-old trails
that meander across the dry, rocky landscape
that I call my homeland.
To cradle a bit of soil
amidst my weathered fingers
that have been numbed
from too much pain.
And so,
I caress the soil to my face
to feel one last time
my Hayastan,
my precious Hayastan.

My light
Beneath your light
I’m playing like your child.
Showered with joy
I’m smiling to you.
My Light - Lord,
Lead me through your way.

Nourishing

I’m nourishing, keeping in hands -
When world is asleep - Love.
Warming it up, holding to breast,
Keeping it gentle and firm.
It seems to be like a bird,
Like alive being to be.
Not nurtured – will lose the force,
Not hold - will fly away.

Zepure Arman: Pomegranate

pomegranate spills its seeds

across the
lands of sable obsidian
sprouting hope
deep rooted
from a past.

Zephyr finds her breath
and breathes

and under it she blossoms.

Interview with Aram Saroyan

Here's my article in the December 8, 2007 issue of the Armenian Reporter.

Zepure Arman: Pacts

I’m making a pact
with some wormhole of fury
to spiral me out of control

licking my wounds
I fall faintly to the thief
who stole my mind

treasure me softly
pleasure me barely
and give me a minute
full of air

air for the day
air for an hour
air which is mine and I’ll sell you through
the mail

yes I’ll sell you this air for
a bucket of fury
to buckle me back in control

The night is sensuous, the night is so sweet,
Anointed with hashish and with luscious
balm.
Along luminous roads I stroll almost drunk.
The night is sensuous, the night is so sweet.
Kisses come to me from the wind and the
sea.
Tender kisses of light blossom all around.
This night, this Sunday is a feast for my
soul.
Kisses come to me from the wind and the
sea.
The light in my soul is slowly fading out!
My lips are still thirsty for that single kiss.
The night is so festive, the moonlight so
bright!
But the light in my soul is slowly fading
out!

“Love Song,” translated by Gerald Papasian,
from Sojourn at Ararat: Poems of
Armenia
, published, compiled and edited
by Gerald Papasian, 1987.

SONG OF LOVE

The night is sweet, the sensual night,
Anointed with hasheesh and balsam,
I pass by this road, luminous and bright,
The night is sweet, the sensual night….

Kisses appear from wind and sea,
Kisses of light blossom around me,
The night is festive, Sunday of my soul,
Kisses appear from wind and sea,

But my soul’s light sputters slowly,
My lips are thirsty for that one kiss…
Exalted night, with light and moon,
But my soul’s light goes out, so soon….

Alene Terzian: Not a Love Poem #10: Modern Day Religion

Now that the worst is over, I will find
you kneeling in church, asking forgiveness
from one savior or another because you
were never good with god or apologies.

The light through stained-glass will form
rings around your head, and you will see
a halo, think you’ve been saved, flip
through genesis and chant god is great.

You will understand the language,
but never the faith, not with apostolic
conviction, not like the saints, staring
at your pinched up face.

Instead, you will pretend the messiah
will spare you for your five minute
prayer, your full-throated halleluiah,
your aching knees.

You will come away having eaten a wafer
or two, drank cheap wine, knelt before
the cross, father and holy ghost, thought jesus
should have been a little less naked.

It will make sense next week when you become
a buddhist or taoist or jew. Then you will know
how quickly each wick burns to reveal
the shiny metal bottom.

William Michaelian: My Old Black Sport Coat

Someday I think I’d like to wear it in Ireland,
And maybe even be buried in it there.
I could fall asleep while leaning on its sturdy
Unfaded elbows, surrounded by strangers in a pub,
And then simply not wake up — as if I’d lost
My train of thought, or managed to forget
The most important thing. Perdóneme,
What did you say again? Ah. He’s dead.
But what a fine sport coat.

That same train is calling in the wilderness.
Now it’s moving slowly past the docks.
Men look up: the beast sniffs along the track,
But knows not where to stop.

Six years ago, when I helped lay my dear Basque
Mother-in-law to rest, I was wearing this coat.
Her grave is beside her husband’s
In a cemetery adjacent to an onion field.
Earlier, in the church,
The man who rented her vineyard
Looked at me as if I were strange.
Jealous of the coat, I thought,
Or puzzled by my hair and beard.
And now, he is dead.

His tractor is calling in the wilderness.
Now it’s moving slowly past the docks.
Men look up: the beast sniffs along the furrow,
But knows not where to stop.

I taught three sons how to drive
While wearing this old black coat:
Country roads, parking lots, residential streets.
I taught them how to use their mirrors
And to back up along a curb.
Hills were easier, they learned,
In first or second gear.

Frequently, along the way, I remembered
When my father had taught me.

After our youngest son got his license,
I was wearing this coat when the two of us
Stopped at a tobacco shop after buying his insurance.
I bought a cigar and smoked it in this coat,
To celebrate what he’d done, but also in memory
Of my old man,

Who somehow became lost in the wilderness.
Now he’s walking slowly past the docks.
Men look up: maybe they know him.
But if they did, wouldn’t they call out?

When I held my grandson for the first time,
I was wearing this coat. Outside, rain.
Along a scented, night-black street,
I walked away from the hospital in this coat,
Pleased and wondering what it meant.

You never know who you’ll meet in the wilderness.

Nora Armani: Mother

Click here for the audio Mother read by the author, Nora Armani.

Mother

The sound of your violin
The world was not to hear
You kept it in your heart
Your sad smile was its sole reflection deep
Mother, your violin was sold.
Is someone playing it now?
Was it used for burning wood?
Or, did it become the cross on your lonely tomb?

Leonardo Alishan: Anahit as Armenia

Papa broke the bread in
half. The aroma. I remembered
you. A bone, somewhere in me,
broke. Hungry, I kissed mama
good-night and left. All night
I tossed in my sleep, dreaming
of your scent, of mama's hair.
I have never known you Anahit,
but I know your perfume well.

Alene Terzian: Not a Love Poem #18: Confessions of a Neurotic

I am that girl who carries hand sanitizer,
wet wipes, Airborne tablets, who squats
in public toilets, wears socks to bed,
monitors the color of urine.

I confess I have baggage enough
for several households. I bake cakes
at 4 a.m.: marble and devil’s food,
banana bread, ginger spice, and walnut.

I vacuum until lines appear on every
surface—linear right angles on sofa
cushions, ironed bed sheets,
and de-linted pillow cases.

If I were to see a therapist, she would
identify my neuroses as vital hindrances
to healthy living. She would medicate
and reprimand, get me to make lists,

classifying each breach in normalcy
as a result of an Electra or Oedipal Complex,
a lack of behavior modification, family
neglect, abandonment, trust.

Zepure Arman: Dissident

I am a dissident
of this torrid entanglement
in quest, for my own stance and
how I became who I have become.
the sloth rises all around me
submerging me into silence
quiet! just keep walking
with eyes frozen to the river
I am a disregard of this contemptuous
land full of box turtles
where the burden
bears hard on the spoken.
...and
then
the
river
runs
dry...................................

Click here for the audio segment Happiness read by Lola Koundakjian

Alan Semerdjian: How To Read A Fortune In A Cup Of Turkish Coffee

I haven’t gone to places most people visit / mosques
churches temples synagogues sorcerers / but I’ve had my
coffee ground read.
Nazim Hikmet

She studied fate on Sundays. It wasn’t every Sunday,
but it felt like it, mostly because of the way she held the
handle, read the insides like fantastic scriptures or subway
maps. It was easy for her. In ten minutes of work, she’d
find two birds carrying white beaded necklaces, a baby in
the trees, and the curse of an eye exploding out of a volcano.
The young in the family couldn’t wait to grow up,
their tongues hanging out for coffee and a lick of the old
country. In the Semerdjian family room, the women sang
stories like gypsies while I marked my height against the
hall closet door. They read each other’s minds.

I once saw my mother begin her spin of the cup on a
blue afternoon. I remember how she swirled its insides,
loosening the essential fibers at the bottom, then turned it
over. The tiny layer of thick mud poured into the saucer’s
curves. Its descent was slow and complete; the handle of
the cup, upside down now, looked like an Armenian nose.

She, too, gave her cup to my grandmother. She, who
washed her clothes, translated her mail, took the same address
and never made a sound to wake her at night across
the hall. She asked for her fate as well. What could my
grandmother tell her? What could she read in the bottom
of that cup of coffee that she didn’t help write? What
could she unpack that wasn’t already put away? They
tried at it for hours. Hours turned to days, days turned to
weeks and weeks turned the conversations into graffiti you
almost forget is there.

I knew then that I would ask for the same treatment.
Over time, I would finish my cup in a dimly lit middle eastern
café on the lower east side and tell the waiter to keep
the change. My grandmother would be long passed away.
My mother would not be around, perhaps in the old family
home worrying about the length of my coat for the season.
I knew then that when the night came, I would put my
pen and notebook away, turn the cup over, and imagine
what he’d see.

Introducing Zepure Arman

Born in Los Angeles in 1973, she is the daughter of a musician father and a painter mother.

She lived in Florida with her mother until she was six then moved to Watertown, Massachusetts. She studied violin for 8 years.

Her inspiration for poetry comes from her heritage and nature.

Of Armenian decent, she writes to always remember. “The world is ever changing. With that in mind, could there be room for more?”

Zepure Arman: Garnick

for garnick badalian

in the mountain stands stolen sand
which once belonged to time himself

an acorn fell from above, the sky, it
must be falling

under the mountain lies the land which
gave birth to her
the land it must be splitting

a passing cloud stopped to rest above
and inside slept a blue dove

a chosen breath strung to a word
left thought for this world.
