Shaunt Basmajian: THE UNESTABLISHED POET

instead
of a new lover
he fantasizes
a penguin publication
royalties
a cottage
by the sea

after a reading
he prefers to get drunk
and think more about
his new poem
instead of the
phone number he received
from an admirer
tormented by one of his
“fillers” he wrote
just to get published
in a small press
magazine

for entertainment
he watches the hockey game
buys lottery tickets
goes to the racetrack
hoping to win
like a longshot
as the underdog
odds
at 10,000 to 1

Come, my sweet little dove,
Amazing apple of gold,
Ten thousand blessings who behold (s you)
You are well come, you are well come.

You, who came, appeared,
Rose for me like the sun,
You regaled me gladness,
You are well come, you are well come.

Joy for my soul, none
There is at all without you,
O my noble most respected one,
You are well come, you are well come.

I was sad, I rejoiced
I was dead, I revived
I am blessed, that you I beheld
You are well come, you are well come.

You are well come, my beloved one,
My most noble, most praiseworthy one,
Light of my eyes, my elegant one,
You are well come, you are well come.

Brenda Najimian Magarity: Carpet Weavers

I

It is 1910,
and I hear
the voices
of young women
as they weave.

One says,
“Let us read
Sayat Nova
at midday.”

“I, too, am a poet,”
another says,
“but tell no one,
the Turks despise
Armenian poets.”

And they giggle
with hearts
that flutter
like those of doves
in spring
believing
life will go on
like this forever

working, weaving
casting the dye
into a
deeper, deeper
purple
that they weave
around a sunburst design.

II

In 1915
everything changed;

a nation’s people
were lined up
and marched to sea.

Hands,
that could write
rugs
in the language of color,
colors
derived from herb and root
and the earth itself,

hands, that could write rugs,
fell
limp
at their sides.

Most died crossing the desert,
bones bleached by the sun
left
sticking out of sand
pointing, pointing
to a God they had known.

One nation
jostled out of a sweet dream
and forced
to leave
their carpets sleeping,
one nation
caught in the Turk’s jaw,
his iron teeth
clamped down
and opened
the grid of genocide.

And the breast of Armenia
ached
to suckle the children
who were gone.

III

It is present,
yet memory
makes the past
present too.

Somewhere
one
still collects
the wool
from the backs
of sheep,

and somewhere
one
still weaves
a double-headed eagle
that dreams of Eden’s Garden
when it was new,

and somewhere
in a place
not unlike Mount Ararat
the nightingale
sings
of an angel
woven into an unfinished design.

An angel,
who patiently waits
for her weavers
who call themselves
Armenians.

Shaunt Basmajian: Waving the flag for the wrong reasons

unable to find a good job
cope with urban reality
dance with the system
the post-downtown poet
tries to figure out ways
to avoid his life
like the rest of the 20th
century

in the back alley of an urban
north american street
he contemplates life
the sad state of the world
his existence
with and without reason

drinks a beer
at a down and out tavern
argues with a pensioner
about politics
the current state of the economy

waving the flag
for more deficits and wars
for more welfare cheques and
violence
for more crime and social injustice
for the next 5-10-15 years
waving the flag
without reason

    Brenda Najimian Magarity: Exit Saroyan

    Why Saroyan
    are you not
    of this earth
    anymore?

    Where will your
    typewriter
    blink out
    the lights
    tonight?

    And when will your
    ashes
    shower over Bitlis
    as you wished?

    You have taken all
    the answers with you
    cunningly,
    succinctly,
    and left the world
    to argue
    as you willed it?

    Yet, in the end
    you asked:
    Had not
    this earth
    the time
    to make
    another day
    with you?

    Kevork Kalayjian: This Holiday Season

    -well lit,
    well, remove the lid,
    open the letters
    in response to
    the help wanted classifieds;
    I am the man,
    expert in the field,
    over ten years experience,
    in life, in real.
    This Holiday Season,
    Give me a place,
    Where I may produce,
Do the things, which will pay,
    the rent, the mortgage,
    toys to the children
    This Holiday Season.

    I have cast my ballot
    one thousand and one times
with a twenty-nine cents stamp (wow its 42 now)
    enclosed with my resume
    with a salary history,
    a list of references,
as I wish to be considered
    for the position of …
    for the prostitution of …
as advertised in the New World Order
    and I promise this time:
I will not sell loans to those
    who will forget to build
I will not provide arms and ammunitions to those
who will forget to spare the civilians
I will not sell my country and my government to those
who will repay me for my treachery and treason
I will stop selling whatever it was that was called decency
whatever is left of . . . me.

I need a candle for this holiday season
and when I cleanse my soul,
and when I start working again,
    after this holiday season,
I will only sell drinking water
and I won’t remind you that
    you forgot to pay.
    I will give you things
    which you can use, goods
    which will definitely improve
    the quality of your life.

Pray for me this holiday season,
    better yet, vote for me
    this holiday season!

Brenda Najimian Magarity: Language of Flowers

    Flowers aqua and yellow
    pressed between your Russian
    and our English.

    Flowers tidy and dry
    colored portraits
    pastel shades
    a flattened bud pointing
    to a word or phrase:
    A reservoir left open.

I have forgotten why I put them
    here
    these book barnacles
living on the rhythm of a line
    all these years
    getting lost in translation.

    Ah,
    Akhmatova

I wish I could have softened
the down of your cold pillow
    in Kiev.

    Irma Ajemian: The Telephone

    It watches
    The telephone watches me
    The telephone watches me intently
    Its black eyes resemble yours…

    I wait
    I wait for you impatiently
I wait for you impatiently for hours,
The black hours become days, they drag on…

    It stays
    The telephone stays silent
    The telephone stays dead silent
While black words pile up in my mind…

    It moves
    My heartbeat moves me
My heartbeat moves me to the instrument
The black instrument lays heavily on my soul…

    It is motionless
    The telephone is still motionless
The telephone is still motionless, it giggles
The black giggle spreads, it grows…

    They shake
    While my hands shake
While my hands shake towards it
The black face similar to the black lips, ears…

    It watches
    The telephone watches me
    The telephone watches me intently
    Its black eyes resemble yours…

    Որ ասվել մտքից՝ գերհոգնած;
    Ներե՛ք, հաշտվե՛ք , դիմացե՛ք
    –Մի՛ թողեք , որ կինն արտասվի։

    Հանե՛ք թշնամանքն ու քենը,
    Կրճատե՛ք լռության սահմանները,
    Մի՛ բեռնեք նրա նուրբ ուսերը
    Մեղքի ձեր մասով կորացած։
    –Մ՛ի թողեք, որ կինն արտասվի։

Brenda Najimian Magarity: On the Eve of the Death of Carl Moosoolian

    A tardy goose honks its way back to its watershed;
night is a hand’s length and breadth away.

    Love escapes somewhere in the distance;
a bullfrog croaks a somber warning, throwing

in the towel for the night between
    stars laying their silvery stitchery in fallow air;

and the moon, whose patience has been stirred with a
knife, surrenders momentarily to a spider-like mask.

    Pinkish webbed veins stream over that once proud face;
in this stark silence there is but one conclusion:

There will never be another you or me, we shall
exist as Poe’s raven declared, “Nevermore.”

Only the complexion of this night’s air and stagnant
sky shall survive. Though the moon under heavy guard

tries to whisper encouragement, the embroidery
of her dark robe patterns the itinerary of life’s

journey; and this I know; love shall turn itself
inside out, comb the earth’s gravity for a place to

hide, then fade away forever. Desire casts no spell
upon that which can be depended upon. Tonight,

even wicked stepmothers hold their hoary breath
and cross their crooked fingers. The wish for

morning has a severe way of manipulating us into
compliance, all of us with some good, some evil.

Even those with too much of one or the other
shall never forget the solitude of a hopeless

paradigm of stars crested in irregular sequence
at the mouth of the moon. There is no way to judge

the sun when one fears never seeing it again.
We beg for the sun and his potent majesty

to mediate any error of space or time that elapsed
between the dread of days gone marching through

this splendor of irrevocable harm. Love is an
endangered species soon to become legend or myth

like the unicorn, bold, brazen – horned spectacle
of virtue. Error transcends momentary fear of grace.

The water is too shallow for the goose; he dreads
the thought of leaving at dawn. How can

we blame him? He mercilessly plucks out his own
strength in the night until only his feathers remain.

Adrineh: A Poem for My Father

    Divided
    Within
    Outside
    By waters that separate
    Your land
    And my world

    Generations
    Of loved ones lost
    Gaps
    Of history unknown
    Of crimes denied
    Of power and privilege
    That destroyed
    That destroys
    Our understanding
    Of each other

We continue to live our lives
    With each passing day
    The tears that I cry
    Fill the oceans that divide
    Me from myself
…And we belong to no one
    Not even each other
    But memories are strong
And you will be a part of me
    ALWAYS

    Brenda Najimian Magarity

Brenda Najimian Magarity is a second generation born in America Armenian writer whose work includes poetry, fiction, non-fiction and memoir. Some of these have appeared in publications such as Pandora, Sing Heavenly Muse!, California English, California Victory, Ararat, Hye Sharzhoom, and Encore. Her work has also been included in these books: Armenian Town, William Saroyan: The Man and the Writer Remembered, and most recently, William Saroyan: Places in Time. She writes of loss, joy, reverence, danger, panic, adventures with William Saroyan, Armenian history and culture, and significant moments of the human predicament.

An incredible event in her life led to much of her writing. William Saroyan frequented her father’s dry-cleaning shop in old Armenian town of Fresno, California. Because of this, Brenda met and quickly began a fond friendship with the great author. In the mid to late 1970s, Brenda became an unofficial chauffeur for her mentor.

In January of 1977, Saroyan went to school with Brenda. At the time, she taught drama and English at Madera High School. The day became memorable for students, teachers and staff alike, as her Armenian hero enchanted audiences all day long. Currently, Brenda is writing Driving Saroyan, a memoir of her years as his friend.

    Brenda Najimian Magarity: Zephyr

    Sweet Mother,
    you carry with you
    the smell of mint leaves
    in summer.

    You are the mediator
    between the grief
    of darkness
    and the utter calm
    of daybreak.

    You betray no one but
    yourself
    when you change
    direction.

    Gentle breeze,
    only you could
    untie the knotted
    shoelaces of
    childhood error.

    Only we
    can worship
    the wind
    for its manifest mystery.

    Kevork Kalayjian: Ours

    what's the use of looking
    beyond the transparent glass
when you cannot let your soul
travel out and away from you,
to experience the wildness of the forests,
    the infinity of the skies,
the uncertainties beyond the first horizon.

and don't you look at me like that!
I am not the one who can show you how!
you have to give birth to your love within you!
as for me, well I ...

I may put together some utterances,
so that you may create your meanings
through the recognition of my words.

I may put together some colors,
so that you may envision your portrait
through the vibrations of a traveling rainbow.

    I may select some sounds
from animal calls or cosmic waves
so that you might live the music you feel.

I may also generate some thoughts
so that you might choose your religion
to draw boundaries on your life.

But all I really want to do
    is to transfer some feelings
from my heart to yours, so that
my love, and your love, could be ours.

    Kevork Kalayjian: The Ad

Do you want to go back to your previous lover?
Are you serious about falling in love again
with the person of so many years ago?
All you have to do is to be friends with me, then
    Become intimate a little bit
and wham, or swish all of a sudden
it will come back to you, and you will realize that
you and you ex belong together.

It’s not a theory it has been tested.
Step by step, again and again.
Susan became a friend of mine
in March, we were intimate in June,
in July, she brought back her ex-lover
from France, and moved away with him.

With Carol I became acquainted in July
    developed friendship in October,
    we were intimate in November
and before that month was over
she knew that the person with whom
she broke off two years ago, was the person
    she was looking for.

So you see it is proven, it works,
and you have nothing to lose
you will either find your former lover
    or this ad will reappear
    with your phone number.

Adrineh: I Am In My Room

    I am in my room
Where I can often be found
    Listening to lovers’ songs
That is more like background noise
    As my life often is.

    I see the wooden dancer
    Brought from Armenia
    She is bare-breasted
    With free-flowing hair
    And jubilant skirt!
    Her head covered
With what is part of my history now
    A tambourine in her hand
    Raised high
    Eyes closed
    Dancing to music
    Only she can hear.

I am lying on my bed
    My naked body exposed
    In the only safest place
    Left on this Earth
    My Aloneness
    I wrap it around me
    Like a bright red-orange scarf
    One of the few things
    My mother brought with her
    To this godforsaken country
    When she was 21
    How old I am now.

    My body
    With its own history
    Too many
    Taking parts of it
    Have TAKEN pieces of it
    Slowly for years and centuries
    Sometimes
    Going to the gym helps
    I give my body strength
    So it may appear that
    My mind is strong too
    And it has its walls
    As I always have.

    I pretend that I am
    Protected
    By this strength
    Like the black obsidian stone
    That populates
    The other country
    Where I should’ve been born
    But can only visit
    Like the few other tourists
    Because nobody ever really
    Just goes to Armenia
    With its mountainous land
    And ancient customs
    Unless they want to study
    Or exotify
    Us somehow.

    But my body knows
    What my mind cannot comprehend
    When I was hospitalized
Because I couldn’t walk for days
    And the white male doctors
    Could not understand
    What is/ what was
    That was wrong with me.

    But my body remembered
    The year before
    I had gone to Armenia
    For the very first time
    To see relatives
    I never knew I had
    And my body reacts
    Upon my return
    Not because of something
I ate when I was there
As they would have me believe
    But because it was misplaced
    Lost
    Forgotten
    Somewhere
    In that space inbetween.

    Adrineh: You and I

    you who held me
    for 14 months
    but came and left
    across borders
    of many kinds

    you who i drove away
    war is peace they say
but the monotony of our days
    was too much
    for me to bear

    you across the ocean
give your love to a black cat
and i to a beige poodle
    we didn’t realize
    the telephone was broken

    for you home is here
    you say
but for me it is where i am
    and sometimes
    that was with you

    you sound different now
    but maybe you always did
and it is in fact i
    who am listening
    with different ears

i feel you in my bed sometimes
and the scent of you lingers on
    but being multilingual
    doesn’t mean we speak
    a common language

    you without a home
    often tired and hungry
    i am well-rested and well-fed
    and regretful of all
    that i didn’t say
    (and all that i did)

    you raised in the lowlands
    learned to ride a bike
    before you could walk
    now back again attempting
    to unlearn racist idealogy

i raised in a cold climate
    learning more than one history
raised to be proud of my isolation
    teaching others
    how to say my name

    you & i tried
    to overcome boundaries
    others set upon us
    to love on the margins
    to dare to speak
    as lovers, as allies,
    as traitors to war

    but to fuse
    the reality
    with the dream
    is what’s best
    now i think

    Introducing Adrineh

“I am a queer Armenian woman who continually challenges assumptions made about me and the world I inhabit. In a previous life, I worked in social services, but these days I’m more interested in contemporary art, online publishing and the potential for social media. I speak English, Armenian and French; I am fascinated by the art of communication in its many forms. Experiences of belonging and not belonging, as well as notions of community, inspire and inform my work.”

    WHITE ROSES

    White roses, white roses,
Snubbed by the wind on its path,
The insane fall wind that rattles
The very entrails of the earth.

    White notion, white notion,
    Now shivering in autumn’s fury,
Kiss of a lily, snowed fascination,
    Tattered moon, silk in entity,

Fetch me the fond milk of your fancy,
    Forlorn roses, smiling as before
    In this dense fog’s melancholy,

Live on in my soul ever more.

Kevork Kalayjian: [under-titled = the title is in the bottom]

    it is not beauty alone
it is not the abundance of wealth
    it is not shared poverty
it might give birth to gods
    it might grow on beaches
it is more colorful than a rainbow
    it is indescribable
it does not drip like blood
    it might seem untouchable
    it is definitely imaginable
    but you still always wonder
    if it ever exists
the warmth the tears the jealousy
    the aggression the beauty

"Poetry is my refuge. But it is not without its own visionary critique and, I trust, message of hope".

    Kevork Kalayjian: Requiem

    Fruits
    need
    time
    to ripe

    to remind
    the mind
    which forgets
    to rage
    and revenge
    the rape
    of betrayals.

    Regrets
    require
    requiems
    to rest
    the rest.

    sur les photos
    d’Ara Güler
    d’autrefois l’automne
    ou serait-ce l’hiver
    j’ai cherché
    le visage de mon père
    cherché obstinément
    ses yeux rieurs
    son sourire triste
    à Beyoğlu
    à Kumkapı
    à Sirkeci
    à Eminönü
    ici au coin d’une rue
    les hommes du Marmara
    siègent
    en rang de tabourets
    pour s’être donné le mot
    là autour d’un brasero
    convoquent mille
    génies du destin
    qui un à un décampent
    et le caïque posé
    sur les flots
    comme un bibelot
    ballotte
    l’ivoire chagrin
    et pêche du soir

    Elizabeth Alexander: Boston Year

[Note by the editor: Alexander read a poem at President Obama's inauguration. ]

My first week in Cambridge a car full of white boys
tried to run me off the road, and spit through the window,
open to ask directions. I was always asking directions
and always driving: to an Armenian market
in Watertown to buy figs and string cheese, apricots,
dark spices and olives from barrels, tubes of paste
with unreadable Arabic labels. I ate
stuffed grape leaves and watched my lips swell in the mirror.
The floors of my apartment would never come clean.
Whenever I saw other colored people
in bookshops, or museums, or cafeterias, I’d gasp,
smile shyly, but they’d disappear before I spoke.
What would I have said to them? Come with me? Take
me home? Are you my mother? No. I sat alone
in countless Chinese restaurants eating almond
cookies, sipping tea with spoons and spoons of sugar.
Popcorn and coffee was dinner. When I fainted
from migraine in the grocery store, a Portuguese
man above me mouthed: “No breakfast.” He gave me
orange juice and chocolate bars. The color red
sprang into relief singing Wagner’s Walküre.
Entire tribes gyrated and drummed in my head.
I learned the samba from a Brazilian man
so tiny, so festooned with glitter I was certain
that he slept inside a filigreed, Fabergé egg.
No one at the door: no salesmen, Mormons, meter
    readers, exterminators, no Harriet Tubman,
no one. Red notes sounding in a grey trolley town.

    Krikor N. Der Hohannesian: TAVLOU

O grand ancient game, upholder of
family honor, Judas to reputations. Your
board a replica of Byzantine splendor, in-laid
mother-of-pearl, Javan teak points, die of
African ivory – we learned your caprices early,

toughened our psychic skins against barrages
of insults, learned to play fast and snap
the checkers, memorized Turkish terms –
shesh besh,, penge u du, du barrah –
called with each throw. Curse the dice
for ill fortune, but count out your move
and you were unworthy. Uncle fixed me

with baleful stare the first time I took
his measure. Father swore he would never
play me again. Hairig, grandfather so gentle,
once bit the dice in frustration. Mother
at 92 took me – a wry smile in victory
and she was gone a week later.

    Krikor N. Der Hohannesian: EXECUTION

    Hrant Dink, in memoriam

They snuffed him – Turkish style,
    a teeming street in Istanbul
three bullets, back of the brain,
    point-blank, draped his corpse
    in white shroud weighted
    with bricks at four corners,
left him lying there for gawkers-
to what end? Horror? Or the mute message,
This Is What You Get for Being Un-Turkic?

Like you, hairig, he was a journalist
a life’s quest of opening doors
    to blackened rooms where
    suffering abides, where grudges
are held tight to pained hearts,
where decades later old wounds still fester.

And we stand, unable to pity the assassin
or forgive his maniacal hatred, waiting
for light to dawn on the lightless.

Krikor N. Der Hohannesian: EVEN IN DREAMS

    Away with these dreams!
    Manichean midnight intrusions
    whipsawing the psyche
    in epic battles of good
    against evil, light over dark.

I have played all the roles-
Quixote on a white colt, lance
held high, fear not my people! Or

    innocent caught in the cross-fire,
at the mercy of the dogs of war,
fangs bared, eyes red with blood lust.

I am Solomon in the midst of carnage,
cooing the wisdom of doves into
ears deafened by battle’s roar. Or,

best of all, I am bloodthirsty avenger
hard at the throats of Ottoman hordes,
    no quarter given!

    My people, my people!
Even in dreams, the battles, never
    enough to expunge the nightmare
    nor resurrect the million souls
    stomped lifeless like despised vermin.

Krikor N. Der Hohannesian: LOVE SPELL

    Some things are indelible,
like India ink, not just on paper
but on the parchment of the soul.
If you are one of the fortunate
the imprint is early etched. I sat

    beside him, his well-scarred desk,
    the green-shaded lamp, watched him
dip the nib into the black well,
    scratch out his Baikar editorials,
    his poems, his short stories
    in Mesrob Mashtots’ script -
    letters of the Armenian alphabet,
    exotic, ancient, cryptic. Mashtots,

ascetic Armenian monk, his life’s work
to translate the Bible into the tongue
of his people after a vision, it was said,
where the hand of God revealed the alphabet,
the written word birthed in letters of fire.

Spell my name, hairig, I asked, and with
    a flourish of a conductor’s baton he
dipped the pen. Spell “love”, grandpa,
I want to see what it looks like. He smiled
with his eyes, tousled my thick, black hair –
    janig (dear one), he whispered.

Krikor N. Der Hohannesian: THE CHERRY TREE

    Aintab, Cilicia

    Forgotten corner of the caliphate,
    mother’s birthplace, she
uprooted at two, a tramp steamer
to Salonika - otherwise another statistic
in the million and a half or, worse,
a concubine in some pasha’s seraglio.

    Cousin Anahid went back,
    the family home survives .
She is eager to describe. Her mother
made the trip at 100, her voice
awash in weeping the entire stay.

    Don’t tell me, I plead.
    The pomegranate trees, the bushes
hunched with pistachios, the smell of lamb
    spit-roasted, the line dancing,
    the happy voices –
it all disappears if you tell me.

Pamuk says Armenian houses in Kars
are ghost houses, haunted by specters
that wail bloody murder. One by one
the last of those who survived April, 1915,
pass on – the thread frays to a wisp.

Five decades I have pondered going back,
wondering if I would spit on the first Turk I saw,
Tell me to my face you still deny it! Tell me!

But I fear the ghosts. I fear mourning
what was never mine , the sadness
I have no right to feel - it belongs to hairig and nene.

    Instead, with those who survive
I leave instructions: till my ashes
into the patch at Mt. Auburn
    where their bones molder.
Wait ‘til April, I say, the cherry tree
    rooted to their graves
will be in full bloom then.

    Rouben MELIK: La Légende arménienne

Click here for the audio segment The Armenian Legend read by Lola Koundakjian.

Krikor N. Der Hohannesian: THE SECRET

(a long time ago there was and there wasn’t)

Always in whispers among the elders,
    the unspeakable, the weight
    of Ararat atop a mystery
    not for public consumption.

    Old Armenian men, hunched
    on cane-backed chairs,
    drinking Turkish coffee in dim,
    smoke-blue cafes - sotto voce
    exchanges punctuated
    by a knowing nod or
    arched eyebrow. Gazes
    wandered, eyes now and
    then misting over…

    Hairig refusing to speak English,
Nene helpless to control the spit
    which spewed from her mouth
    when uttering the “T-word”, rubbing
her nose still unable to rid
    the stench of rotting corpses
    piled high on makeshift drays,
    catafalques for the slaughtered.

Shame, given no word, stalked the psyche,
grief snuffed, losses left to history –
an uprooting unappeased by the promise
    of America, anomie our lot.

    We, the next generation, inquired
with trepidation. Armenians, we were told,
were smart and hardworking. The past
wasn’t worth dwelling upon. It belonged
to those from Hyastan and not us, their children.

    Krikor N. Der Hohannesian

Krikor N. Der Hohannesian has been writing poetry for almost 40 years but until a few years ago never mustered the courage to submit his work for publication. To his utter surprise, editors took interest! Der Hohanessian's work has since appeared in many journals, newspapers and anthologies. He comes from a family of writers, artists and musicians on both sides so it is no accident that he was drawn into the arts.

The poem "Love Spell" is about his maternal grandfather, to whom he gives full credit for his love for writing and literature.

Armenag Nazar (hairig) fled Turkey (Aintab) with his young family in tow in 1910 shortly after the massacre at Adana - the handwriting already being on the wall. He was a writer and a founding editor of Baikar, which Der Hohannesian believes was the first Armenian language newspaper in the USA.

Every Armenian of his generation whom Der Hohannesian speaks with remembers one thing, if nothing else: the familial silences regarding the events of that time - his were no different. Mostly everything they learned was by innuendo and inference.
Two of Der Hohannesian's poems which appear in the Armenian Poetry Project, "The Bearer" and "The Secret", are reflections on his own experience of this phenomenon. To say that he, as a child, found it unsettling would be an understatement.

Krikor N. Der Hohannesian: THE BEARER

    There is always one

    the anointed one

    the bearer of the sadness

    and you can’t remember

    how it came to be

or why you, not yet of age,

    were chosen.

    With no forewarning

it sneaks through a side door

in any number of disguises -

    a nod

    a touch

    a word

    a sidelong look

    weighty silences

    and yes, sometimes,

    even a smile

    wry at the edges,

    knowing.

Armenian Writers’ Union works to improve the state of Armenian literature: article in the Armenian Reporter

Through far-reaching conferences and publications, the union is bridging the literary traditions of the diaspora and the homeland

by Aram Arkun, THE ARMENIAN REPORTER, Friday January 09, 2009

Quotes from the article (emphasis by APP):

"Aleksandr Topchyan argued for promoting the use of the Armenian language abroad where feasible, but also judiciously supported writing in other languages: "We must help Armenian writers abroad to be able to write in Armenian and not face the fate of Shahan Shahnur and others - a difficult thing that can be done only with the aid of the government," he said. "But if they have to choose between writing in another language and not being able to live as an Armenian-language writer, I prefer the former. If our language is not heard, let us write in other languages."

..."Sarkis Guiragossian summarized the attitude of the majority in an article published on October 22, 2005, in Beirut's Aztag Daily: "Armenian writers who as a result of bitter fate create in foreign languages are not foreigners, but faithful and dedicated ambassadors of their Armenian blood and spirit in non-Armenian surroundings, and thanks to that very condition and their [Armenian] national activities, worthy of every sort of praise and respect." Zori Balayan pointed out that the presence of a global diaspora and its writers was one positive result for Armenia of the tragedy of the Armenian Genocide."

    Alan Whitehorn: The Cascade

There is the famous Cascade in Yerevan.
    From the surrounding hills,
    its waters gently spill down
    the white stone marble steps,
from one garden terrace to another.
Finally and spectacularly, it reaches the city.
It is an impressive and beautiful sight.

    But there is another cascade
in this land of three million persons.
As I am introduced to one individual,
    that person,
    in turn,
    introduces me to another,
    and another,
    and still yet,
    another.
Soon it becomes an exhilarating torrent.
And I am overwhelmed by the glorious cascade.

SOFIA KONTOGEORGE KOSTOS: ON THE OTHER SIDE

So imminent and ever-present was the peril, and so fresh the memory of these dire events in the minds of the non-Mussulman subjects of the sultan, that illiterate Christian mothers had fallen into the habit of dating events as so many years before or after “such and such a massacre.” —George Horton, The Blight of Asia

I stand outside a solid wall
    of ancestral olive wood.
    It contains gnarly wooden fruits
from the memory of what— once was
    an olive branch.
    Clutching my camera,
    I press my eye
against a gape in the wall to see—
    through to the other side.

    I spy a woman—she doesn’t see me—
    perhaps she’s forty.
Her face swollen red, soaked by tears—
she’s mouthing words in a whisper.
I hear the scratch of her pen
    as it moves across
the back of her family icon:

    Easter Sunday, 1895

Recalling the day, her body heaves!
On a sheet of plain paper
    she draws a line
    from up to down.
    In the middle
she draws a new line from left to right—
    the lines form a cross.
    Beneath the cross she writes:

    Eternal Their Memory

    Her hand quivers—
slowly she pens her husband’s name:
    Garabed
    then her sons’ names:
    Dickran
    Armenak
    Hagop
    Mihran
    Atom

She hands her list to the village priest
furtively waiting at her door. He tells her
    he will bless their names
with the names of the other dead.

Her body falls to the floor.
She’s crying, but I hear no sound.
She curls up like a wounded bird
    before it dies. Her silence
    sears my soul—
as I stand – safe – on the other side.

    Alan Whitehorn: Coffee Paradoxes

    In a society so poor,
    what is striking
is the number of stores selling large flat screen TVs.

In a society with so much pollution,
    what is puzzling
is the number of disposable plastic bags for everything.

In a polity where the state-media attempt to control the message,
    what is challenging
is the number of cell phones.

In a society with such persistent poverty,
    what is shocking
is the multitude of high-end coffee shops.

    Perhaps in those smoke-filled cafes,
    they reflect on these paradoxes.
    Or maybe,
    they just sip their coffee.

    Nayiri: In Reality

    “Sorry,” you said, “bye”
    and abandoned ship
    as if our friendship
    was only a lie.

    “How fickle you are!”
    I wondered aloud
    searching for memoirs
    of the man I loved.

    Ghosts of sentiments
    in a twilight dance,
    strings of instruments
    of discordant sounds,

    wishes, illusions
    heaped into a mound,
    unrequited love
    was all I could find.

    “Where are you”? I screamed.
    Echoes filled the air.
    It was just my dream
    You were never there.

    Milena Abrahamyan

Milena was born in Yerevan and immigrated to the United States when she was 10 years old. Since then she has been crafting a story to make sense of who she is and what has granted her the privelege of such a unique experience living in the Diaspora. Currently she is a Creative Writing and Women's Studies double major at Hunter College. Some of her goals for the future include publishing a memoir, and learning to read and write better Armenian. She believes that once she has mastered the Armenian language the struggle with words will be more rewarding.

    Nayiri: Hindsight

    On that fateful Spring night
    the music was so loud
that I could not quite hear
    your whispers in my ear.

    I nodded with my head
    Feigning to be polite;
    Little did I know that
I had signed up for life!

    Fifty years together
    were not an easy ride;
we have had our fair share
    of taking life in stride.

    I think it’s only fair
    That I should now confide;
    ‘wish I’d heard you better
    On that fateful Spring night!

    Nayiri: Bye Lines

    Hi dear!

    Your linen is clean
    And the bed is done
    I took the mail in
And left the den light on.

    Coffee is in the pot
    (you always liked it hot)
    A meal in the oven
    Just turn the button on.

    Sorry could not linger
    Wrapped around your finger.
It’s time you mind the store!
I will be home no more!

    Bye dear!

    SNOWFLAKES
    Colorful complaints in heavenward prayers
Inexplicable words on the feathers of a wounded sparrow
Silent mosques in the heart of a frightful desert
    Triangular emotions of car wheels
Meanwhile it snowed again over the city
    You were two different snowflakes
    Within two different hearts
In this weather water turns into ice
You cannot wander around and you cannot make love
But under the light of your hopes in your hotel room
You can only dream of a spring with the statues
    Yourselves akin to the statues
Meanwhile it snows again over the city
    You are two different snowflakes
    Within two different hearts
At dawn you will hear the sobbing of a guitar
You will be silent - you will sing - you will cry reluctantly
You will dig out the eyes of the impregnated twilight
The horizon will devour the suns like a tiger
Meanwhile it will snow again over the city
You will be two different snowflakes
    Within two different hearts

    IN THE TEMPLE OF ATHENA

In the temple of Athena I will wait for you tonight
All the bells will tinkle under the firmament of Olympus
Snow-white swans will swim in the pools
The murmur of brooklets will be heard beneath the rocks
In the temple of Athena I will wait for you tonight
The lyre of Orpheus will tell an ancient love story
The flutes of nymphs will herald your arrival
The loving turtledoves will perch on the olive trees
In the temple of Athena I will wait for you tonight
From the same cup we will drink the wine–sweet as your eyes
I will extinguish your burning lips with mine
Under the glimmering stars we will sculpt the monument of
    passion
In the temple of Athena I will wait for you tonight

    It was raining
    A single hope landed
