James Baloian: IN THE SAN JOAQUIN

The warm tropical winds have finally
pushed a high pressure system
over the valley, and suddenly
the idleness of February and March

becomes a fury of Aries
blowing fire in each Ant
to catch up for the late cloudy weather;

Weeding, spraying, planting, tying and picking,,
irrigating, tractoring
the Ghost of the Bear
finally awakens
bumps his head
in the dark cave,
and each morning
through his transcendental cave,
feels the eye of the Sun
wake earlier,
and hears the birds
singing their songs
in the black/blue
and the Sun
coming North

the smells of Orange blossoms
in the cool evening and mornings
release her scent to the Earth
and by afternoon
lay still and yellow
curling below the shade
of the leaves
a small ball
of green, the eye hidden
in the leaf for December

and I wonder if I want to wake,
and go out into the world of working hands,
and faces that speak in the dust
and growing of roots and the fingers
of green brushing the windows
of lighthouses
looking out with a singular eye
the voice of Josha
on the lips of the Horn.

Albert Kapikian: Lamentations from the Armenian

the last light    loiters
wet in the trees

a voice     waivers
unwombing dawn

I unweed your tapestry
of stars. Some bleed when I yank
them out. I want
to throw them back up
into the sky, I want to unleash
our arms, the exquisite torture of hands

2

the year is strange I did not want to see it
sometimes I dream of coming home
even my old bootprints are here
I dream of sinking into them
never coming back

I dream of a childsong
a pulse of my own
as we watch the sky
in cups held like mounds
of earth in our hands

3

I will never wait again for their faces
They have no more stones to bring me
To burden me with. Only casual whispers
And decrepit feet. They are watching something else

The sun perhaps. Or the stones that drop from the sun
When our dreams no longer wait for us

They are lost. They do not listen to me
They will always have these stone faces now
In the dark as we labor by the sea
The sand wailing in between our toes

4

Where is the end, dark Jesus, Suicide
Rich in thunder and river blood, where are
The trees that will take root in our bowels,
The storms, where are the storms, let us gather
At the mouth of the storms and take them up
Like broken flowers, sober shapes of
Death, let us restore them now
And forever and unto the ages
Of ages. Let the leaves, that fall in-
Furiate us.

5

it is late and white
there are no prisoners or psalmists
only flies and air

the moon is a wafer of light

we snatch at last things and tuck them away
like tired children
in the dark we excavate a last prayer
and cover it with stones leave it out without a name

6

We choose Hell
- Vahan Tekeyan

The wind is leaves and stars tonight.
It is done, done. Dawn, done. The hour, done.
The bell, the flower, wind. The water, wind.
Come, you may come. Touch us. You without
a face. Without a life of your own. You, Death.
Break now. Heart. Go triumph in the black wound
Of trees by the sea. There we will spawn such dark
That night itself could not speak our name.
This night, anyway, is here. Let us mourn
And be fruitful, and in the deep furnaces of the earth.

Let us multiply

Esther Mazakian: Inside Her Darkest Ice Age

From under an avalanche of angst-y avoidance they sniffed out
an escape route like it was fresh kill; predators gathering in cool cahoots, they moulded
a smooth globular cake of icy guile
out of instinct, hard
snow, to serve as the first loveball of hot grade 8 infamy; a recess erection
for a week straight and architecturally,
a frozen
                                                sherbet of near-
fornication
that caught her breathless one frigid morning ass-
first after Science, protesting disingenuous, gasping with hormonal semi-indecision,
her neck a scarf of sweaty mohair, her body a toppled
baby in a snowsuit, nylon arms, legs, hood pointed
into a star shooting toward the blue,
                                wintry,
cartoon-cloudy sky,
and her lips pressed to the lips of the maladjusted boy thrown at her
core, core of seedy pubescent entrails, boy from the back
of the class with the scuzzy
hair, plaque-hoary teeth, no wherewithal
to hand
anything in, and she kissed him hard, hard with a zealous, crural squeeze that surprised
even her, this boy, this boy that her mother
would have taken by the ear like a rat
by its tail
                                and fast chaperoned
out of her daughter’s world, a world that was, until then, a still-frozen sluice of coming
betrayal, that is,
                                                                                                before the cryo-
                                                philic
father’s head caught wind,
hacked up a squall of encroachment,
                                                                                                                                                 blew.

Esther Mazakian lives in Toronto. In 2006, she published her first book of poetry, All The Lifters (Signature Editions), which was shortlisted for a ReLit Award. She is currently working on a second entitled, The Stain of the Story.
Esther Mazakian has been published in numerous journals, Malahat, Event, Prism, Descant, Fiddlehead and was the winner of the winner of Earle Birney Prize for Poetry 2004 and was an editor's choice in 2002 and 2003 in the ARC Poetry Contest.

Albert Kapikian: Snow

Forget about us, about our
generation. We have envied plants
and stones, we envied dogs

Myra Sklarew
The Science of Goodbyes

The wind is steep and near. Come snow.
The children wait for you. They say
The earth will drop and fill in white.
They wait for you tonight, for you.

The dimensions of the sky loosen and start to slip out,
No longer pasted together with light.
The bottomless side has already fallen

The snow lowers in slants.
Like a crate it leans
And claps onto the earth

IT RAINS, MY SON…

It rains, my son Autumn is wet,
Wet as the eyes of a sad deceived love
Go, shut the window and the door
And come sit beside me in stately

Silence It is raining, my son
Does it at times rain in your soul as well?
Does your heart feel cold and do you shiver
Thinking of the bygone bright sunshine

Now beyond the shut door of dire fate?
But, you cry, my son In the dusk, sudden
Heavy tears tumble down your eyes

Cry the unredeemable tears of innocence,
Cry oblivious, my sad unaware son,
You poor prey of life Cry to grow up

Albert Kapikian: New Year's Eve

Tonight is for the way we rush
in lingering, looking back
at the blasting furnace of hopes
that is the year just past
for the way we transmute them
into the papier mâché stars
dangling in the dance halls
and hotel bars

tonight is for the way
it all begins again
in candlelight
over dinner, dancing with friends

for the way we become figures of imagination
again, waiting to come true in the coming year

ASA Announces 2013 ‘Arthur Halvajian’ Poetry Competition

WARWICK, R.I.—The Armenian Students Association of America (ASA), Inc. this month announced that it will sponsor the Armenian Poetry Project’s (APP) annual Arthur Halvajian Memorial writing competition. This is the fourth year that the ASA, Inc. has sponsored the competition named in memory of Halvajian, a longtime member and trustee of the ASA, Inc., who passed away in 2010.

The deadline for submissions is Feb. 28, 2014. Winners will be announced in March 2014.

“We are happy to continue our support of the Armenian Poetry Project in honor of Arthur Halvajian, who first built our relationship with the project,” said Brian Assadourian, chairman of the ASA, Inc. Board of Trustees. “We are encouraged by the hundreds of individuals, from elementary and high school students to college students and post-graduates, who participate in the competition. Their involvement shows that the Armenian community continues to value and promote creative writing, which has been a hallmark of the rich cultural tradition of the Armenian nation throughout the centuries.”

The Armenian Poetry Project, led by Lola Koundakjian, is a research and documentation site of 19th-21st-century Armenian poets and poetry. Whether it is through its website/blog, Facebook, or iTunes presence, which features podcasts of recited works, the APP brings together writers from all walks of life across the world.

The competition is open to individuals with one or more parents with at least partial Armenian heritage. All Armenian residents of the United States and Canada are invited to submit their work, in English or Armenian (preferred), for the competition. Entries should be e-mailed to ArmenianPoetryProject@gmail.com, with the subject heading “Halvajian ASA/APP Poetry competition.” Individuals may only submit one poem for the competition.

The competition groups submissions into three categories: students (ages 12-17), college age (ages 18-22), and adult (ages 23 and older). A top prize will be awarded for each of the categories in the amounts of $50 (students), $100 (college age), and $250 (adult).

Each poem must be accompanied by the author’s full name, age, home address and telephone number, school name, and sponsoring teacher’s telephone number. Those in the college age category need not include a sponsoring teacher. Those in the adult category need not include school information.

The Armenian Students’ Association of America, Inc. encourages educational pursuits by Armenians in America and the raising of their intellectual standards, provides financial assistance in the form of scholarships to deserving Armenian students, develops fellowship among them, cultivates in them the spirit of service in the public interest, and acquaints them and the entire American community with Armenian culture.

The Mary Elinore Smith Poetry Prize - 1993

TRANSLATING

I
I was born bilingual but...

the Armenian language
became the music of my childhood
the honeyed taste
of everything that was home.
It is my lost treasure,
halved and bartered;
the dream that comes to haunt
the English-language dream.
It is the echo of the ages,
the shadow of old giants,
which we grasp at, a gift
we are letting drift away.

II

Old Words

Sometimes it takes five words
of buoyant, tensile English
to explain one ancient leathery word.

Old words lie weighted, glittering
for centuries in the sun
like brittle stones.

And Armenian words have worn thin
like old coins, changed, exchanged,

gaining a soft patina unmatched
except by old monasteries in the rain.

Their meanings have grown ironic
with a subtle subliminal drone.
Take the word for justice
with its satiric overtones.

III
Custom

Words are not lifeless.
They live in houses;
they grow and they are fed.
In Armenia Dada does not mean
father but grandmother,
the second hovering figure
over baby's head.

IV

Words Are Made of Breath,

larynx, lip, and tongue,
print and paper but the silent signs
of what there is to be sung.

The Arabs say every new language
gives the learner an added soul.
The Irish say Celtic silence
cannot be recast or retold.

Italians laugh saying music
is the challenge, moving music is the art.
The Armenians say their language
is translated only by the heart.

Ա.

Albert Kapikian: November

Earthworms exhaust themselves to inch
Below the frost. Frogs, turtles and turds
Stiffen in the grass. Above ground, bees flinch;
Only queens live through winter interred.

There is less food, less warmth, less light.
There isn't much you can do now
If you've wasted your soul. Hindsight
Cannot cajole the strict here and now.

Still, some roses grow hips. Acorns fall.
Persimmon and pawpaw drop fruit
Which eaten, digested, et al,
Scatter in the wind and find root.

There Was a Time…
And there was a time when we rambled
on the drowsy sidewalks
Asking nothing from the world…
For radiance and tremor,
In my hand, I had your fingers
and your hand --
At your eyelid, a pure teardrop dangling.
And from the world, we asked nothing.
Then, it was my hand
On your flank, feeling sad, feverish,
Miffed like a muffled scream…
It was your shoulder,
Crumbling under my scorching hand
And your crystalline tear
turning heavier.
Yet, we asked nothing from the world.

Michael E. Stone: Massis

On the peak of Massis,
Under snow, cloud-crowned,
since antiquity
sits a spirit of past-present,
guarding the gopher wood,
and pitch of the Ark.

Life savers, life givers
Noah and his unnamed wife,
Mother of Seed, to plant
at its foot, in Ararat plain.

Massis was clear this morning
Yesterday clouds garlanded it,

The poet speaks of a cart,
Sailing down from its peak
to Jerusalem, bearing
salvation.

Symbols well-worn
for good reason.
Revived life givers,
Always majesty.

PLAIN WINTER NIGHT

To your kiss, oh, night, my window is open,
Allow me to breathe in deeply, in dalliance,
The leisurely stream of your milk’s passion
And the moist magic of your cool radiance.

Oh, night so plain, yet aflame with brilliance,
Pour into my heart the waves of your charm,
From the honeyed bursts of your fair trance,
Nursing my love-seared soul a sip at a time.

I want all vacuous voices to fade in silence,
And my thirst to imbibe your nectar’s fever;
I want day and time to accept their demise,
As I kneel, begging at the base of your altar,

And as I kneel to beg at the foot of your altar,
In the throes of a lowly supplicant’s posture,
And drenched in your hot, seething shimmer,
Let my eyes eschew the vision of this nadir.

Oh, entrancing night, take me as your own,
Contain me, oh, you most mystical serenity,
And the whimpering of my pleading groan,
And from my soul, a kiss to last all eternity.

My room is bursting with tart remembrance
Of the fierce passion of yesterday’s squall,
And the nooks still weep in mournful moans
In dread and in fear of its ferocious arousal.

Force your way in -- in through my window,
And fill up my cell, until in affectionate ardor,
Its four corners with your holiness overflow,
And I am awakened from my olden slumber.

To your kiss, oh, night, my window is open,
Allow me to breathe in deeply, in dalliance,
The leisurely stream of your milk’s passion
And the moist magic of your cool radiance.
