MOTHERHOOD

Silent is the night…
The dazzling stars herald
veritable delight and glee,
tears merge with smiles
and the world hums the melody.

For a mere moment a spotless heart
beats over the heart,
for a moment a pure affection
embraces all creation.

It is a soul surged from a soul,
A life entwining entire skies.

A pair of sparkling eyes,
offering hope and starlight,
spreading astral glory and delight.

Two tiny paws
cuddling the cosmos.

In the silent night…
An infinite light in each and every soul,
motherhood, wholesome and bright,
sweet enigma mystifying one and all.

Michael Minassian: THE GREAT DEPRESSION

In 1929, my grandfather’s boss
at Hovanian Oriental Carpets
ran out of money, so paid him his wages

in brightly woven rugs from Armenia, Turkey,
Afghanistan and China, “Take this, home,”
the owner said, “d’ram cheega.”

So week after week he brought home carpets,
tacking them to the floors then the walls
of the three bedroom apartment

in the Bronx, using a large
Persian rug as a bedspread,
and another to protect the couch.

Then my grandmother covered
the kitchen table, refrigerator, and stove,
the bathtub, toilet, and sink;

next, she stitched together clothes:
pants, shirts, underwear, and socks,
and convinced the cobbler down the block

to make shoes for the whole neighborhood;
then they lined the street and sidewalk
with carpets and tapestries, remnants, and rugs.

Soon you could walk barefoot on Bathgate Avenue,
while up in the apartment, my grandmother
cut strips of fabric to bake or fry,

serving the pieces mixed with rice pilaf,
or toasting thin slices in the morning,
stuffing the rest into the coffee grinder

boiling it down as thick as Turkish coffee,
a stiff bitter tonic
served with salt and sand.

Willow Garden
Tr. by Erica Blunt and Arthur Kayzakian

The scurfs of chapped lips rustle
In the willow garden
Unintelligible faint cries
Are the jewelry of the fog
The wind edits the size of her eyes
Her eyelids are heavier than tree foliage

Perched on the lowest power line
E chirps the tone C sharp
E preens then feathers to the highest
Power line and mates with F
Destroying the foundations of traditional music theory

An earthquake has cracked her lips
Thousands of words stuck
Under the ruins
They crumble and fall
Fertilizing the garden of willows
Where someone’s earlobes
Had touched hers
Producing no sound

Michael E. Stone: April 2015 in Yerevan

It was a mixed grill of
Genocide centennial,
manuscripts, friends,
my glad thanks to those
lovers of the treasures
that are hand-written
painted manuscripts,
who welcomed
me from the first day
for I share that love.

Those treasures of beauty,
of language, art, and craft
enfold within the power
for a mighty transmutation
of victims into the bearers,
witnesses and lovers
of that history and beauty,
those songs and tales,
that the singers of this time
and the next will turn
from unbearable pain
into the imperative of life,
of living, of breathing,

The pain of the past,
demands life,
new birth.

TAMAR BOYADJIAN
author of the newly published book of poems

it is what it is

SUNDAY, OCTOBER 4, 2015 at 5:00pm

ABRIL BOOKSTORE - 415 E. Broadway, Glendale, CA 91205

Presentation will be in Armenian. Admission is free with reception to follow. For more information, call (818) 243-4112.

it is what it is, through visual and experimental poetic form, tells the story of a troubadour grappling to find a means in language and sound to sing a canton of her childhood. In its struggles and "failures" to express and narrate, the book's inter-textuality and hybridity explore and challenge themes related to language, subjectivity and translation; as well as reflect upon how the threat imposed on a dying language, such as Western Armenian, can manifest itself linguistically and textually.

TAMAR BOYADJIAN was born in the "View of Mountains," but her life has been that of a wandering troubadour. She teaches medieval literature (and the literature of other people and cultures) as well as creative writing at Michigan State University. She is also involved with the Armenian Studies Program at the University of Michigan. From time she was very young, she believed herself to be a knight[ess]. Her world is habitually medieval, though she also visits other worlds from time to time. She believes that certain truths quiescently play in the interstices of life, which are oftentimes indistinct and remain that way. Tamar Boyadjian is her life's artist.

BANNED BOOKS WEEK 2015: September 27-October 3

The Armenian Poetry Project joins the ALA's (American Library Association) Office for Intellectual Freedom (OIF) in promoting awareness of challenges to library materials and celebrating freedom of speech during Banned Books Week.

A challenge is defined when attempts are made to remove or restrict materials, based upon the objections of a person or group. A banning is the removal of those materials. Challenges do not simply involve a person expressing a point of view; rather, they are an attempt to remove material from the curriculum or library, thereby restricting the access of others. As such, they are a threat to freedom of speech and choice.

For more information, check the ALA's link: http://www.ala.org/bbooks/bannedbooksweek.

Thank you for supporting the freedom to THINK.

‘Poetry of Memory,’ an Evening in Solidarity with Armenia

From the Armenian Weekly, September 16, 2015

CAMBRIDGE, Mass.—On Sept. 21, an evening of poetry, titled “Poetry of Memory, an Evening in Solidarity with Armenia,” will feature readings by renowned Armenian writers Diana Der-Hovanessian, Peter Balakian, and Krikor Der Hohannesian.
The event is organized by the distinguished Nigerian poet and Professor of Philosophy at Wellesley College, Ifeanyi Menkiti, the owner of the Grolier Poetry Book Shop, the oldest continuing poetry bookstore in the U.S. and a landmark for poets. The event will take place at the Cambridge Public Library (Main Branch), located at 449 Broadway in Cambridge, from 6:30-8:30 p.m.

Peter Balakian is the author of six books of poems, most recently Ozone Journal (2015) and Vise and Shadow, Essays on the Lyric Imagination, Art, and Culture, both just published by University of Chicago Press. The others are June-tree: Poems 1974-2000, Father Fisheye (1979), Sad Days of Light (1983), Reply From Wilderness Island (1988), and Dyer’s Thistle (1996). His work has appeared widely in American magazines and journals such as “The Nation,” “The New Republic,” “Antaeus,” “Partisan Review,” “Poetry,” and “The Kenyon Review,” and in anthologies such as New Directions in Prose and Poetry.
Balakian is the author of the memoir Black Dog of Fate, winner of the PEN/Albrand Prize for memoir and a New York Times Notable Book, and The Burning Tigris: The Armenian Genocide and America’s Response, winner of the 2005 Raphael Lemkin Prize and a New York Times Notable Book and New York Times and national bestseller. His essays on poetry, culture, art, and social thought have appeared in many publications. He is Donald M. and Constance H. Rebar Professor at Colgate University.

Diana Der-Hovanessian was twice a Fulbright Professor of American Poetry and is the author of more than 25 books of poetry and translations. She has awards from the National Endowment for the Arts, Poetry Society of America, PEN/Columbia Translation Center, National Writers Union, Armenian Writers Union, Paterson Poetry Center, Prairie Schooner, American Scholar, and the Armenian Ministry of Culture. Her poems have appeared in “Agni,” “American Poetry Review,” “Ararat,” “CSM,” “Poetry,” “Partisan,” “Prairie Schooner,” and “Nation,” and in anthologies such as Against Forgetting, Women on War, On Prejudice, Finding Home, Leading Contemporary Poets, Orpheus and Company, Identity Lessons, Voices of Conscience, and Two Worlds Walking. Der-Hovanessian works as a visiting poet and guest lecturer on American poetry, Armenian poetry in translation, and the literature of human rights at various universities here and abroad. She serves as president of the New England Poetry Club.

Krikor Der Hohannesian had been writing for four decades when he decided five years ago to pull the dog-eared, cobwebbed sheaves off a closet shelf to begin exposing his poems to the light of day. Catharsis took place in shredding most of his work and beginning from scratch, helped in no small measure by the luxury of semi-retirement. Since then his poems have appeared in many journals and periodicals, including

“The South Carolina Review,” “The Evansville Review,” “Permafrost,” and “The New Renaissance.” He resides in Medford, and serves as assistant treasurer of the New England Poetry Club.

A mon rosier

Me regardent, hélas ! mélancoliquement...

O tendresses liliales, aurores radieuses,
Ciels bleus et clairs, rayons du soleil,
Purs comme mon cœur, innocents comme mon âme !

Jack Antreassian: Farewell

I.

Will I see Yerevan again again
walk in the streets that intersect my past
inhale again the incense of dead ends

and hear the echo now receding fast

the summons of ancestral pleas no more
except perhaps by reveries possessed

no more however much I weep the door
between has rusted on its hinge I come
to you on knees turned red with blood and sore

but no one comes to me I wait in numb
expectancy invoking love and prayer
and worlds beyond your world if only some

could venture to this shore and with me dare
beguile those wretched siblings joy despair

II

I see Armenia in my father's face
the age inscribed with twisted squirming lines
beneath a thin veneer of stoic grace

a smile not certain it should smile benign
curved in a wistful arc small flecks of fear
flawed diamonds out of place a crude design

of frayed illusions to redeem the cheer-
less image of a world not his but rude
alternative to death the hymns he hears

are anthems of the dispossessed imbued
with vestiges of faith the resonance
an echo of a past aspersed pursued

by wilful demons taunting his laments
forever victim of his innocence.

Ill

Others prevail who revel in their pride
indulging fantasies of eminence
insensitive to time's recessive tide

the brawling scavengers of violence
who for their tribal glory sacrifice
what lingers yet of love and innocence

heralds of genocide quick to devise
a righteous warrant for a filial curse
insinuating virtue in their lies

so many have excelled among them first
the Turks discerned that hell has its rewards
but not for us the slaughtered and dispersed

who seek not death although by death restored
better to bare the neck than wield their sword.

Gregory Djanikian: Dark Wings

Now is the time to say
something for the animals

felled by gunshot and broadax
cluster bomb and bayonet

who have lain curled in their own blood
without succor or consolation

their flanks torn apart,
their fibulas shattered,

the muscles of their rippled
animal strengths untendoned,

horses in their heavy tranquility,
dogs snuffling the marshy grass

by river bank, by well-spring,
the sleek, undaunted cats, the goats

meandering by olive groves
without notion of bullet or

impending boom of artillery,
a hot sharp sting of pain

felt in the deepest folds
where nothing, neither claw, nor tooth,

nor talon, nor the brightest shoots
of light has ever reached

Sylva Boyadjian-Haddad: Treading On A Land Mine

Be mindful crossing the desert
Let your boots land softly on sand

(Check your arrogance at the gate
Clear your mind of fear)

You could as well be treading on
A poet’s grave as an old mine

This poem was published in Salt  (Finishing Line Press) in 2011.

Sylva Boyadjian-Haddad: Peace

It must have been dark by then
since in the distance I saw stars
dead millions of years shine

their light on us

Literary Quote for August 2015
