Arthur Kayzakian: Armenian Folk Dance, 1915
A man and woman hide in their home
to dance amid lit candles.
He kneels as she twirls
around him.
She raises both arms in the half-
light, and the shadow of her hands—
a bird in flight—brushes the wall.
If this were any other day, she would
clap to the beat of the drum.
She tip toes to keep quiet
from the crows outside the window
roosting upon crucifixes
that go on, row after row.

Arthur Kayzakian: Rain
After he hugs his family goodbye
he passes umbrellas and park benches,
sees the edge of a vexed flower petal and thinks,
the flower is a man off to war.
Without looking back,
he can hear his children kicking
laughter in and out of him.
His wife’s throat, a gleam of sandlight.
Fifteen years later,
rain beats out a puddle in the shape of his body.

Arthur Kayzakian: Mothers Who Raise War Gods, Part 1: The Art of Carcass Dragging
Sahakanush knows her son will be good.
She reads his tea leaves.
Each night she pulls three tea bags from a jar,
extracts dry minted plants and scatters them
across her den’s wooden floor. Some nights she mixes
peppermint, pomegranate white, dragon well, jasmine,
and a spicy blend of masala chai. She brews a hot cup,
watches steam swirl into the air and disappear.
Sahakanush calls it skywriting. Anything resembling smoke
helps her fall asleep. Her son will be good: In the future
he chops men off their war elephants. Blood spurts on his lip,
his crotch bulges. In the leaves she is not proud to see death
captivate him. When she sees something she doesn’t like,
she brushes her hair mumbling litanies under her breath
while looking in a mirror. She meditates on its shine,
long black strands falling on her face like silk curtains.
She likes the way he grips the metal plate of his enemy’s vest
and pulls the body across the soil—
vultures gathering around the trail of blood it leaves behind.

parte de la noche bajo el puente;
—a esa hora no habrá cuerpo que lo atraviese—;
fluye en cambio por debajo la corriente
de incontables, ignoradas cartas y misivas
dirigidas con justicia por remitentes,
sin encontrar destino. En hileras la luz
de los postes alcanza iluminar
el breve paso del correo fluvial
en su curso nocturno río abajo.
……..Sobres cerrados y lacrados
de remisiones nunca recibidas,
tintas corridas por el agua,
la humedad de viajes sin arribo:
noticias, promesas, intenciones
Surgen vagas formas, siluetas nacidas
luego habrá desaparecido;
arrojado,
noche de sí mismo
al amparo
de aquella identidad
opalescente;
más clara y familiar
en ocasiones
que otras en que se abisma,
una sombra
atravesada en la vigilia.
……..Puebla una muchedumbre de siluetas,
colmando la escisión, la pérdida de vista;
siempre nuevo e inesperado, tan visible
indiferencia, contraste, retazos
de asfalto desprendido, con oxidadas
tuercas y pesados jirones
de concreto. La tierra desnuda y seca.
Vago rumor,
allí no hay diálogo que valga;
no existe fuga
más allá de los linderos;
tan sólo se da la espalda
y desanda de vuelta al destierro.
The river passes between the columns that hold up
part of the night under the bridge;
it slides, divides and fragments into multiple
courses - agents of an army of shadows
in the wake of some obscure concept
engendered in the upheaval. The arch of the bridge
of the bridge tighter and tighter against the night
-at that hour there will be no body to cross it-;
flows instead underneath the stream
of countless, ignored letters and missives
addressed with justice by senders,
without finding a destination. In rows the light
of the posts is enough to illuminate
the brief passage of the river mail
in its nocturnal course downstream.
........Secured and sealed envelopes
of mail never received,
inks smeared by water,
the humidity of journeys without arrival:
news, promises, intentions
keep the current going,
the dismemory of meaninglessness.
It also happens during the day
that the growing sensation of a flowing
takes the walker by surprise,
who walks with death through alleys.
As they move, scales of grayscale from white to black
from white to black give it away.
Vague forms emerge, silhouettes born of themselves, emerge
of themselves, they go out to the hypnotized streets,
drunk with opaque mist: the dust confuses them with their vain matter.
with its vain matter, deceives them.
........They leave behind them neither streets
nor busy corners:
as the wayfarer and death
they move, they remain in the memory,
and then fade away (such was the fate of the old tramway).
of the old tramway).
The slightest glimmer will be enough
to miss the crossing and walk
in the improbable opposite direction,
that of the echo of his footsteps.
First you will feel yourself falling behind,
little by little he will feel himself falling further behind,
then he will have disappeared;
then it will no longer be him but his shadow:
a hidden dream
behind the corner where he sleeps
that unknown dweller
of what other time, God knows.
To the night of living
thrown,
night of itself
in the shelter
of that opalescent
opalescent;
clearer and more familiar
at times
than others in which it is abysmal,
a shadow
crossed in the vigil.
........Puebla a crowd of silhouettes,
filling the splitting, the loss of sight;
unknown faces always in formation
assail the field of the gaze; it is the chaos
always new and unexpected, as visible
as changeable and without warning, that eludes the trace
of all those who search for themselves
around the spiral,
gravitate towards its ever descending center.
Every encounter occurs at noon.
One can then go against the direction of the abyssal current
of the abysmal current; against the flow,
if one does not pay too much attention to directions,
one can arrive at the outskirts of the city.
There the land is a wasteland,
pebbles and brown greenery mingle,
indifference, contrast, patches
asphalt, with rusted nuts and heavy tatters.
nuts and heavy shreds of concrete.
of concrete. The bare, dry earth.
Vague rumor,
there is no dialogue there;
there is no escape
beyond the boundaries;
only one turns one's back
and wanders back to exile.

Global

Albert Kapikian: thankyou America
a Vietnam Vet exposed to Agent Orange
thankyou America
for sparing us your angels tonight
yes death is such an embarrassment I know
one needs a soothsayer
of extraordinary delicacy
these days a Cassandra simply will not do
I dare say such neurotic maidenhood
has fallen out of fashion these days
one craves a clean white wordless fellow
to utter the word cancer
dead here on the bed he built
every now and then we need to find out
how well we are dying
why we want so little, some laughter, a hand
why we redream ourselves every night
and I shall carry a basket of dead hands
to the bingo games
lay them out one by one
a bonus to be placed on any square
we have had the same beginning
let us have the same end
yes his skullcap is perhaps
a bit loose
let me perfect it for you
he is willing to wade in all your light
all his neversongs
all his bardless fire
a dead spider is in the window
its exuberant legs legs braided in the heat
the morning is red and sticky no moon
he's sure to bed before it rises
— Albert Kapikian
This poem appeared in the 1982 edition of The Calvert Review, published biannually by the University of Maryland.

Nora Nadjarian: Letters to Parajanov
1.
Whisper, Parajanov, that colour from long ago. The alphabet melted when
my mother in church said: for each a candle. We learned to smell that wax,
it was tears. My father stabbed the sky ten times and fled. A bird became a decade
and then a century and we slept in another country, it was the crane.
2.
The story starts off a delicate girl, climbs stubborn mountains. The secret of the ark,
a magician gave me thirty-eight letters to write: My name is – I come from – We speak –
and other phrases repeated on loop. The long climb of not forgetting, Parajanov,
open and close my mouth, give me the pride of a nation to swallow. It hurts like love.
3.
We grew up, our eyes that beautiful black, our silences multilingual, and that glue,
Parajanov, which fixed us and sealed our lips, peeled. Years later, the lyrics returned,
the crane. Did you bring news? I asked. The question was burning my throat,
that absence. Where is the place where language lives? Did you bring news?
Nora Nadjarian

Crane, whence dost thou come? I am a servant of thy voice.
Crane, hast thou not news from our country?
Hasten not to thy flock, thou wilt arrive soon enough!
Crane, hast thou not news from our country?
I have left my possessions and vineyard, and I have come hither.
How often to I sigh, it seems that my soul is torn from me.
Crane, stay a little, thy voice is in my soul,
Crane, hast thou not news from our country?
Thou dost not carry disappointment to those who ask thee,
Thy voice is sweeter to me than the sound of the well-wheel:
Crane, thou alightest at Baghdad or Aleppo,
Crane, hast thou not news from our country?
Our hearts desired it and we arose and departed,
We have found out the miseries of this false world,
We are deprived of the sight of our table-companions.
Crane, hast thou not news from our country?
The affairs of this world are long and tedious,
Perhaps God will hear and open the little gate,
The heart of the pilgrim is in sorrow, his eyes in tears.
Crane, hast thou not news from our country?
My God, I ask of thee grace and favour,
The heart of the pilgrim is wounded, his lungs are consumed,
The bread he eats is bitter, the water he drinks is tasteless.
Crane, hast thou not news from our country?
I know not either the holy day, nor the working day,
They have put me on the spit and placed me at the fire,
I mind not the burning, but I feel the want of you.
Crane, hast thou not news from our country?
Thou comest from Baghdad and goest to the frontiers
I will write a little letter and give it to thee,
God will be the witness over thee;
Thou wilt carry it and give it to my dear ones.
I have put in my letter, that I am here,
I have never even for a single day opened my eyes
O my dear ones, I am always anxious for you,
Crane, hast thou not news from our country?
The autumn is near, and thou art ready to go,
Thou hast joined a large flock,
Thou hast not answered me and thou art flown!
Crane, go from our country, and fly far away!

most ominous
Translated by Victor Pambuccian from French
most ominous
is not the silence of the wolves
the absence of countercurrents
the flight of the hours not even
the perversion of words
but actually
the Opening– the blinding whiteness
of the Opening
This translation appeared in Black Sun Lit Vestiges an irregularly printed journal of prose, poetry, essay, and art.

Identity Check
Translated by Victor Pambuccian from French (Switzerland)
—what is your name?—that of the founder
of an unknown city that of a long disappeared
bird species
that of a forgotten language that
of a beautiful ship lost with all hands and cargo
—how old are you?—as old as my father’s
father was when I was born
as old as my father was when I
weighed anchor the age my son will be
when I will have nothing left to lose
—where do you come from?—from the epicenter
from the high plains from the occupied zone from
the train station from the morgue from nowhere
—where do you go?—to the only spring to
the estuary to the roof of the world to
the bottom of the abyss in the night of my
skull in the sun of my bowels
—who are you?—the nephew of the wind the lover
of the ash the disciple of fire
the heir of the void—and who else?—an
eternal prowler a deserter or
rather: a plunderer of deserts a wrecker
of rubble a motionless traveler
a one-eyed seer a hunter of shadows
(a shadow)

Victor Pambuccian: The thought of you
No, it’s not time,
not the many rivers of it
on which we once came
and now glide down
separated by
marshes of pasts and
futures apart.
And no, it’s not the sun,
it’s not the light that
enters a room
when you step in.
Not even that
overwhelming presence
of a sitting portrait.
Nor the absence of
a movement of thought,
the frozen landscapes
that are thawing,
the fruit of unknown trees
on the ground,
thin, green leaves
in the glaring sun.
It’s the silence,
the unavoidable silence
of the boat ride.
A professor of mathematics at Arizona State University, Victor Pambuccian has published widely in specialized journals on the axiomatic foundation of geometry. His poetry translations, from Romanian, French, and German appeared in International Poetry Review, Pleiades, Two Lines, and Words Without Borders.

ARDA COLLINS: Over No Hills
It civilizes me,
not like a private sense of bed
but that I have powers of speech at all—
I think I am going to stop
eating bits of paper
that don't say anything on them—
that don't even say anything on them—
I know I should do something
as they say, "for the snows of embarrassment"
like a day in March when the blood is closer,
day singing for the loss of its whip.
Closer, I say, closer.
Or maybe I'll arrange to have you run over by horses
unexpectedly.
At first it will seem terrible,
a wood-framed tableau in which you're torn limb from limb
or in what as a photograph an idiotic stranger will see and call "wild dust"
then ask about the car park,
something he says
that he brings out like a bow-legged cowboy walk
or leaning with one elbow on the counter.
He's our witness, how awful.
But eventually in our separate ways, we'll see the wisdom in it.
The horses are brown. They're from a painting
hanging in my once-room at the Hotel Phillips
in Bartlesville, Oklahoma.
When the next day I saw sunset on the prairie
it gave the impression that the world would go on
as only grassland.
It was my wish
not to know
its reach.
I looked at it like a dog,
a dog waiting to be shot
with a long rifle,
or just a double-barrel shotgun.
O sweet shotgun, make the sun go down.
From It is Daylight (Yale University Press, 2009).

Diana Der-Hovanessian: Thanksgiving
Love is not all. It is not food nor drink.
Edna St. Vincent Millay
Nor is food love, but palate's sport alone.
Even with ceremony, without toast or vow,
it is just means of keeping flesh on bone.
But table and altar are confused somehow.
We substitute our food again, again
for rites of love. Look how this buffet sinks
with golden fowl and platters of grain
and candles for our eyes to drink.
Love is not food. But in the name of those
with parched throats, who could not eat
or pray, whose empty mouths have closed,
whose bellies swelled with pain not meat,
we call it sustenance when it is shared.
And sharing we call prayer.

Rupen Khajag: Only the war
I spent two hours
Buffing away a century and a fifth
Of corrosion from a doorknob,
To get my mind
Off the madness around me--
So far, yet so close--
While flipping channels on the screen
Between picutres of the war of my people
And the election between two dinosaurs;
While chatting with friends
About the war
And the two dinosaurs;
While pretending to be optimistic
About the war
And the outcome between the two dinasaurs;
While thinking about the war
And the...
Only the war.
Only the war.
Before I know it
Generations of grime are lost forever
And I am looking into a ball of shine.
I wish I had snapped a "before"
On my phone,
Which is overworked
And drained as of late.
This thing in my hand
Was once black and green.
Black and green.
Green and black.
The green battledresses of our heroes;
The black-clad mothers full of grief.
Only the war.
Green and black.
Black and green.

Armenian Authors Reading Aloud
Amaras Art Alliance is sponsoring a new online experimental project called “Armenian Authors Reading Aloud” initiated by Sharisse Zeroonian. The goal is to have writers and poets of Armenian ancestry from around the world make videos of themselves reading their own work, which Amaras will share online. Interested individuals may contact us via this email: Amaras@AmarasOnline.com
Guidelines:
Please record yourself aloud from your own manuscript as a video clip, the length of which should not exceed 5 minutes.
The language the work is read in should be that of the language in which it was written.
You may submit more than one clip for longer pieces, but each clip should not exceed 5 minutes.
Video clip format should be one acceptable for Youtube (ex. MP4 generally works well).
Send the finished product to Amaras@AmarasOnline.com along with a brief description of the material, a title and a short biographical statement.
We will review your clip and, at our discretion, will post it to our Youtube channel, Facebook Page, and website.
Thank you.
