MEHR LICHT Colline rouge, désert blanc, fleuve jaune, aube verte.
Jour noir, nuit bleue.

Aaron Poochigian: My political poem

Election Night. A Walmart parking lot.
A green fog off the half-drained reservoir
had jumped the fence to breed with puffs of pot
issuing from a mag-wheeled muscle car.
Like always, sick of work by eight o’clock,
I had gone out and squatted on my knees
among the dumpsters near the loading dock
to feed a pack of strays. The runt Burmese
that goes by Freak was up on lizard hips
licking the gravy from my fingertips.
So cute – one-eyed, scab-nostriled, stumpy-tailed.

Because, whichever rancid sack prevailed,
that evening meant, like, Fuck you all – The End,
civic Seppuku, the Apocalypse,
I guess I itched for something, some hushed friend
too innocent to be American.
Everywhere gobs of noise just wouldn’t quit:
a speaker-mounted Wrangler nagging Vote!,
fireworks like gunshots, bleats, gunshots again . . .

I grabbed my mutant future by the throat
and wrestled it, a squall of snag and spit,
into the footwell of my shotgun seat.
The whole drive home I wept to hear it…

Nancy Kricorian: Homage to Bourj Hammoud

Have you heard a thrush sing while its nest burns in the wind?
—Khalil Gibran

Listen. In the morning you can hear the bright strike of hammers and the rasp of saws. Children carry sand from the riverbanks in their school satchels. First they build the church, then the school, and finally a house for each family according to its means. The tents and shacks are taken down one by one. Each family plants a mulberry tree and tends its garden.

The remnants of Marash create a new Marash. And so also Nor Sis, Nor Adana, Nor Giligia, and Nor Hadjin are made. You can hear the sounds of the trades learned in the orphanage workshops: carpenter’s plane, sewing machine and cobbler’s bench. The sharp smell of the tannery is in the air and in their clothes. All Beirut wears their shoes.

Look at the children outside the church in their freshly pressed clothes, and the girls have ribbons in their hair. Look at the food spread on the luncheon table and the hands that pass the platters. Someone has told a joke and there is laughter. Someone pulls an instrument from its case.

Speak of those times, or don’t, when the parties take up arms against each other. How the women of one church throw boiling water out the window on the men with guns. When all Beirut stops fighting, for how many more weeks do the Armenian men continue to shed each other’s blood?

Speak then of the flowering: the neighborhood children grow tall. Among them are musicians, actors, painters and poets. In this world their parents have rebuilt from ashes, they now believe anything is possible, and everything is new.

Remember this: when the Civil War comes, neutrality is no amulet against the bullets and the bombs. Jewelers flee the downtown souk for Bourj Hammoud, where the militiamen patrol the night and then also the day. So many boats leave the port. Carrying leather suitcases to the airports, so many are exiled again.

Remember Nor Adana, Nor Marash, Nor Sis. Men still play backgammon and grill meat on braziers on the sidewalk. Remember the narrow alleys and wooden houses of Sanjak Camp, razed for a shopping plaza. Oh people of long memory, listen, look, speak, remember: your stories are a homeland.

He de morir contigo.

Ti ho obbligato a spogliarti davanti agli altri,
a scendere con me fino ai bassi fondi.
Eri oggetto di sazietà e di piacere:
accudivi come una cagna obbediente al mio chiamare.
Quanti sono passati sopra di te
come cavalli pestando l’erba.
Quanti hanno bevuto del tuo seme
la linfa della saggezza.
Ho tagliato tutte le rose del giardino.
Non ha germogliato né un solo seme.

Devo morire con te.

E di noi
non resterà traccia.

Nelly Keoseyán: SALMO

Nunca le pregunté al destino
si me tocaba seguirte.
Simplemente me fui.

Me desnudé y te dije:
bajemos. Metámonos
más hondo en el infierno.
Hagamos ahí dentro en lo obscuro
el paraíso del placer.

Abre la puerta negra
Hurga Entra
Desciende el misterioso abismo.

Y tu pasión fue mía y tu goce.

Luego te di mi alma y te dije:

To hear the audio clip, click here.
Poem by Nelly Keoseyán; read by Mónica Morales

Alan Whitehorn: Forgetting and Recalling

There is an advantage of writing
compared to speaking before a live audience.
In putting pen to paper,
I have time to wait for the train of thought
to come around the track again.
Hopefully, this time I will not miss my carriage.
What is that I hear?
Is it the engine whistle in the distance?
Quick.
I must begin to get ready.
But wait,
what track was it scheduled on?
I need to remember.
I need to remember.
Damn.
What was that sudden swoosh in the night?
Have I missed the train again?

Drown Yourself in the Mirror

Drown yourself in the mirror a thousand times over—drown yourself
until the mirror will change into a flight of images
drown yourself in the mirror especially without a mirror at hand—
the emptiness will deepen your flight into the night, then
Drown into the labyrinth until the labyrinth
will change into the root of all saps
drown into the labyrinth especially without one—
the emptiness will lift you up from the infinite root of all thoughts, then
Drown yourself into solitude a thousand times over—
drown yourself in loneliness until a shape made of glass
will pass through the diagonal of all solitudes
drown yourself into solitude especially without solitude—
the transparency of the absolute will leave you all the more alone
on the shore with silvery lips
where only the naught could count your steps.

dublu, se jena să-i fie ruşine –
ruşinii-i prefera răşina neutră a uitării •

Blue Dandelion

I hold in my hand a blue dandelion—an unknown one
it is watching me thoughtfully
its strange option would be to harvest me with its eyes
I am myself a strange tree—
with a lot of chlorophyll around my eyes
my lungs and my wings—flying I breathe
The blue dandelion thinks slowing down the seconds—
and in my palms the seconds swim like fish
A cheek glued to the void, I weigh the impalpable
Full of nothingness the rusty gate of my heart unlocks
The beast falls asleep under the light
like a page in the clutches of signs
The blue dandelion—a ship I navigate
Emperor of my thoughts’ empire
carried into the crepuscule by the breeze
I change into a God with autumnal steps
wrapped up by deception
carpets of beautiful leaves wither under my soles
and I am snowing
while I advance through air
In my hand I carry my blue, magical scepter
my scepter that is watching me and thinks of me
while watching it in my turn I can’t figure out—
which of the two is dreaming the other

Writer's Block at Father's Grocery Store

Coarse coffee grinds took the color
of Medusa's hair. A pound of garbanzo
weighed less than Nabokov's Lolita.
A bag of pita felt softer than Juliet's
pillow before suicidal Romeo. I wrote
countless villanelles on paper bags
before stuffing them with cans of dolma,
bottled rose water, and pouches
of Aleppo pepper. I thought I saw
the Karamazov Brothers tasting Kalamata
olives. Sometimes I sat on cardboard
boxes full of fava beans and daydreamed
about Anne Sexton. I couldn't write
because Father called me back to work.
Madame Bovary wanted two pounds
of French ham sliced thinner than lined paper.

Gayane M. Haroutyunyan: Cold and Beautiful

Cold grey and beautiful
send me off
to tame the tigers of you
to draw the punctured line of you
with the funny stink and the greedy breath of you
the old man’s mouth of you

Cold never black and beautiful
like life
for I see the rising planes of you
the barely here of you
enclosed in the alchemy of you
and the speaking stones of neon bliss of you
Cold red and beautiful
like love with its promise
so stunning
there is no need
for its graceful manifest of you
From
the silent
windy
laugh of you
to the hidden
breaking
cry of you

Gayane M. Haroutyunyan: MY BODY

Last night
when I was cooking
a lonely dinner
of potatoes
and Brussels sprouts
I burned my arm
in five places
in five minutes.
I didn’t ice it,
instead
I went on
cooking
thinking
waiting.
Blisters
showed up
like capsules
of shifting fish
glistening
beautiful
and then
I felt sorry
for my body
how it suffers
for years
and doesn’t know
how to stop.

Pablo Tenekedjian: LAS PRISIONES

LAS PRISIONES

I

Nada debe asfixiarse entre sus labios,
Ni el óxido aguado de las lunas,
Ni un estallido de claroscuros
Cuando los medios cautivan.

Aprisa,

Despacio,
Más aprisa.
Cambian los rostros y nada cambia.
Un capullo de capa negra
Rompe la magia en artera distancia;
Y eso es,
Sólo,
Pétalos como excusa y agonía desdentada.

II

PETER BALAKIAN: Head of Anahit/British Museum

For Michael Coyle and Donna Frieze

1

You said anyone could walk in
with a pack of explosives as we passed through
the crowds of tourists and school kids —

under the glass-grid ceiling lit with sun.

I was saying: She’s our earth, our body, our sex,
as we drifted down the halls of statues and colonnades
and hunks of facades of Greek temples until we found

room 22, “The Hellenistic World,” where a bronze face
in a glass box on the wall stared back at us.

Head from a bronze cult statue
of Anahita, a local goddess
in the guise of Aphrodite (200–100 BC)

the text hung there in space —

Found in Satala in NE Asia Minor
(Armenia Minor)

a left hand holding drapery was found with the head  //
and out of some bad Comedy Central joke,
my iPhone buzzed with a flash news update
about ISIS or ISIL, or whatever they called themselves that week —

Temple of Baalshamin at Palmyra — blown up —
the phrase re-circled — blown up —

2

and my head was back in the white van with the TV crew in ’09
winding through the buttes and roadside gullies of the Syrian desert,
to the Armenian memorial in Der Zor,

before we went to Palmyra where I sat under
50-foot Corinthian columns —
the corners chipped by wind and sand

in late May when it hit 110 at noon
and the sun melted the plastic rim of my cell phone —
as our driver appeared out of nowhere with stacks

of zaatar bread and Diet Cokes —
we found some shade under a portico
as the visionary pillars disappeared into blue sky.

3

Outside students were buzzing through the gates
of UCL and the brown brick of Bloomsbury was lit up
with sun after rain —

inside the wunderkammer of Hans Sloane
and the collectors who hauled their stuff from the Middle East —

(What is the Middle East? my Turkish publisher
asked an audience at NYU —
Istanbul, Jerusalem, Mumbai, Srinagar?)

you kept asking: What is year zero to us?
Didn’t our war destroy some temples and museums?

I called the curator on the phone at the info desk
to leave my complaint on the message machine
about the signage:

“Satala wasn’t Armenia Minor/NE Asia Minor —
it was central Armenia /Anatolia — make correction.”

4

What questions were we asking
staring at the misinformation on the wall
and the beautiful Armenian head of Anahit?

Why was I back in Der Zor at the chapel
digging Armenian bones out of the baked ground —
scratching the marrow and dried mildew?

the imperial shock and awe of burning Tigris —
the lynching of Saddam on the internet,
vanishing tomb of Jonah —

which fetishized objects ... whose museum?

I’m gazing at the head of Anahit — Armenian
goddess of fertility and love —
(no more local than the Brooklyn Bridge)

staring at the green and red paint still speckled on her bronze head.
I love her serpentine upper lip, her eyes of black space —
I stare into the screw hole in her neck
the two curlicues of hair on her forehead
her august throat; her dense acanthine hair.

Aaron Poochigian: Good Morning, Night

First a gunshot then the sirens
murdering sleep at three a.m.

Beyond the sill an urban gulf
and fear greater than for oneself.

There is no war of us and them
in the eternal Barrio,

only a desperate status quo.
Worse, after all that noise, the silence.

Derelicts

I.
I heard the harmless maniac
who camps in front of my bodega
roar from his carton on the stoop:
“I am the Alpha and Omega,
the kick in the smack, the massive attack,
the zoom bah bah, zoom bah; whoop, whoop, whoop!”

Polychrome Christmas lights were blinking.
A white dove—well, alright, a pigeon—
posed on the guy’s cardboard façade.
I don’t go in much for religion
but, trust me, I could not help thinking,
“Lo, another son of God.”

II.
I love you, vagrant, with my own self-love

because I see myself there sleeping rough
on rubbish under a construction scaffold.
Because I hear my future in your cough,

my voice among your five defiant voices,
I love you, vagrant, with my own self-love.
What crisis crazed you? Was it chance or choices?

Come summer, if my doom does not improve,
your landmark madness will be me unraveled.
So here’s a buck—a fiver? That’s enough:

I love you, vagrant, with my own self-love."

III.
Ah, where the wind is ruffling
trash bags, and moonlight snags
on cracked façades: that shuffling
nebulous humanoid
who glooms through shreds and drags
a shadow like a void.

The beards of the Unemployed
dissolve in the rags
and shag of night.

Mott Street, each time I walk it,
parades this mental case.
Last week he dredged his pocket,
flashed me a watch—no band,
just a smashed, digital face.
The time: Please Understand.

A whirlpool demand
from backward space;
a black-hole wound.

He always gives me this funny
feeling, a pity akin
to rage: should I toss money
into a bottomless bum?
Indulge my nagging twin?
Feed what I could become?

Here’s something, Mr. Mum,
but keep your grin—
I don’t want none.

IV.
It’s late and lost in tunnels that I find him—
Mr. Mirror Shades (the mufflered one),
his past the tentacles of pipes behind him,
his stature like a hunched harp made of bone.

A tarot card, a king of prophecy
enthroned on coats and rubbish, he sometimes
rattles his wicked little cup my way
and conjures up a mishegoss of rhymes:

One wave of poison, two of disease,
and a pulse will roast your phones and freeze
your engines.
Rats, then, will rise through the sewer grates
as executors for the Fiend or Fates
and gnaw with a vengeance.

Sirens will sing the Apocalypse Blues
and, morning, noon and night, the news
will be static.
Why bother dialing nine-one-one?
Why dash for the drawer and get out the gun?
Why hide in the attic?

No one will be surviving this,
so go out and find somebody to kiss,
or religion.
A blood tide creeping up our shores,
it’s time to get down with the dinosaurs
and passenger pigeon.

So he intones, out of his nose, his skull.
Chuckling, then, he scrunches for a bow,
and I give something to the oracle

for briefly making Armageddon now.

         For those who deny.

to be the beheader

      is to ignore

      how deeply memories

      embed themselves

      in tomorrow's

            blood

to be beheaded

      is to lose touch

      source of thought

      water's web

      sight of blood

            running away

to be an observer

      on site viewing photos

      watching film willing or not

is to be grateful you are not

      the victim your blood

            recording everything

to be remembered

      victims' dried blood

      must be washed

      with clean hands

      in memories' open

            baskets of language
