I spent two hours
Buffing away a century and a fifth
Of corrosion from a doorknob,
To get my mind
Off the madness around me--
So far, yet so close--
While flipping channels on the screen
Between picutres of the war of my people
And the election between two dinosaurs;
While chatting with friends
About the war
And the two dinosaurs;
While pretending to be optimistic
About the war
And the outcome between the two dinasaurs;
While thinking about the war
And the...
Only the war.
Only the war.
Before I know it
Generations of grime are lost forever
And I am looking into a ball of shine.
I wish I had snapped a "before"
On my phone,
Which is overworked
And drained as of late.
This thing in my hand
Was once black and green.
Black and green.
Green and black.
The green battledresses of our heroes;
The black-clad mothers full of grief.
Only the war.
Green and black.
Black and green.

When I was a kid, I used to think my nose was a mountain.
I’d squish it against the mirror, the pillow, these fingers, the wall,
to rid myself of that figure,
and become who I was meant to be.
I’m waiting to reinvent myself;
take apart the parts defective and find something finer.
I’m playing persistent catch up;
two years behind, one career slow.
Finally, the world is moving at my pace,
and I can’t move.
The space between before and then,
stretched along a long rubber band
ready to snap, fold in half, and break apart.
Scatter itself into the corners of my room.
Dust collects upon my skin,
like a fucking magnet.
I’m a walking
metaphor of shortcomings.
Except I’m not walking anymore.
I’m myself from last Tuesday,
awake and perfectly still
in scattered sheets and dirty underwear.
Like a composition from an Xavier Dolan film.
A lost love’s chest covered in come.
In dreams my naked body walks across cold sand,
slowly treading my feet closer to the sea.
Beyond the cargo ships in the distance,
day breaks, beckoning me to follow.
To sink myself in order to swim.
I’m amiss of mid-somethings.
A breath of fog, hovering above my flesh,
ready to jump and slip into my Sunday best ...
instead of resting.
My body resists becoming what I’d like to be.
I’m waiting to just arrive,
the way flowers do in the spring.
The way you don’t notice,
until one day
they do.

What do the birds teach us
in these times of pandemic?
Vocalizing sounds as music
greeting dawn in a universal language
where tweets, cackles, trills, pecks
are a prayer unto themselves
monovocal melodies from song sparrows
pitch, tempo, beats and whistles
vibrato of feathers, buzzes of warblers
Dialects and tones of plumage
go beyond boundaries
Is there not an iconography of winged creatures
inviting us to recollect what to feed on?
Swallows forage in the sky
we need manna from the heavens
soul food in times of difficulty.
I come from a lineage
of Armenian genocide survivors
where sustenance from above
inspired steps to move forward
and once again
consider birdsong.

Tear upon tear flow,
one by one
seemingly forever.
But ever so slowly
each tear also releases:
first the fear, then the anger,
next the frustration,
and lastly the despair.
And so eventually,
one day a child is born.
An elderly woman’s
weathered hand
reaches out
and gently touches
a young infant’s
tiny fingers.
At that precious moment,
hope and love begin anew.
In touching the hand
of the newborn Anoush,
my metzmama Siroun
could see a better and happier future.
In the end,
love prevailed over hate,
and life over death.
