Nora Nadjarian: Mother Tongue

Click here for the Youtube.com clip read by Finnegan Flawnt .

Which language do you dream in,
swear in, cry in, asked the questionnaire.
How many languages do you swim in,
drown in, breathe in, mime in?

Do you know how many tongues have adopted
your voice? And when at night you stare
at dark walls and one pair of lips
comes closer, whispering in perfect German

Ich bin deine Mutter -

Or the night shadows enlarge into a Fritz Lang
open scream and Muttersprache appears
on the silent movie screen, then:
what do you reply? In which language,

and how clearly, do you say: my mother tongue
is somewhere in the recesses of my mind.
I am not an orphan. I have a mother.
She put me to bed one night

and went away. The film we made
together has long been silent. But I still
hear her voice in the keyhole of my heart.

Leonardo Alishan: Christmas Eve, 1988

Angels sleep on a stack of gambling debts
gathering dust and interest.
The ivy loses five leaves every day.
I helplessly count
the last sleeping pills
on my unfamiliar fingers.
The Christmas tree is a village maid
all made up for her wedding night.
The fireplace is a big, black yawn.
Yellow leaves should not be left
among the green.
(Why does Granny's ghost
sleep under my son's bed?) . . .
The big win, the sure bet
never was and never came.
I kissed the bottle goodbye
but the apricots never kissed me back.
A cigarette butt burns my nostrils
but I am too tired
to put it out.
My guardian angels sleep
with their broken wings
on my soft stack of gambling debts.
In the mirror I see
God's corpse burning in the acid seas.
The tired ivy hangs her bare arms languidly.
(I'm too tired to bend,
raise the blankets from my son's bed,
and play peek-a-boo
with Granny's ugly ghost.) . . .
It [is] . . . frustrating
. . . counting sleeping pills
and having extra fingers left.
In the end, the old fireplace
will have the ultimate pleasure
of belching smoke
after making a meal of the Christmas tree.
(Merry Christmas Granny and good night.)

Gregory Djanikian: When I first saw snow

Click here to hear the audio clip When I first saw snow read by Gregory Djanikian.

Tarrytown, N.Y.

Bing Crosby was singing "White Christmas"
on the radio, we were staying at my aunt's house
waiting for papers, my father was looking for a job.
We had trimmed the tree the night before,
sap had run on my fingers and for the first time
I was smelling pine wherever I went.
Anais, my cousin, was upstairs in her room
listening to Danny and the Juniors.
Haigo was playing Monopoly with Lucy, his sister,
Buzzy, the boy next door, had eyes for her
and there was a rattle of dice, a shuffling
of Boardwalk, Park Place, Marvin Gardens.
There were red bows on the Christmas tree.
It had snowed all night.
My boot buckles were clinking like small bells
as I thumped to the door and out
onto the grey planks of the porch dusted with snow.
The world was immaculate, new,
even the trees had changed color,
and when I touched the snow on the railing
I didn't know what I had touched, ice or fire.
I heard, "I'm dreaming. . ."
I heard, "At the hop, hop, hop. . . oh, baby."
I heard "B & O" and the train in my imagination
was whistling through the great plains.
And I was stepping off,
I was falling deeply into America.

Marjorie Deiter Keyishian: Traders

Women weeded, they hoed. Sweat, the river that ran
between their breasts, poisoned their milk. Such hot sun—
such long days—making room for rye in stony
fields. Their infants left behind perished,
though their grandmothers softened the flat
cakes of rye they warmed for supper with water.

The lovely Maritza’s husband was shot down
for his watch by a friend who called for him
at midday—and, ever after, the family waited,
paying for news of him. She had five small
mouths open round her table. In spring,
she climbed the hard hills to sparse Turkish
villages to bring candy, to bring thread. Once
a Singer sewing machine went over
the pebbled roads. The donkey groaned. She,
alone, loaded that donkey and went herself
two times each year, to the Turkish village
to bring bright threads; tawny, raspberry,
and blue. Bent over looms they set up themselves,
villages of young women wove themselves
into fantastic beasts and birds, gardens
that keep alive their hungry children
no one but they are left to feed.

Marjorie Deiter Keyishian: We Didn’t Know

That our stone houses, our high raftered roofs,
were tents—shredding as we feasted and sang,
snug within, though wind keen (though wind break sleep
with those hollow sounds the ear shapes, those words
the ear invents), that hooting wind—great train—
rounding square corners of our houses, eating
them away. Where villages climbed a hill
are paths and a crumbling wall. Under earth
are shards of pots that flushed us rosy red:
steaming stews we spooned out, quarrelling all
the while. Portions were measured, you see,
and rugs (the moths ate) to be divided.

A morning like any other: rounded up,
flushed like hunted birds, we took what we ate—
nothing else. We ate the village.

In five days it was gone. The old died first.
Then the young cried in the night for food, but
there was none. Next day, they, too, were gone
away. Look! I’ve drawn those streets. These boxes
were fine timbered houses. This one was ours.
Where we live now is warmer and stronger.

Marjorie Deiter Keyishian: Sweets

In spring his mother strapped a store of candy
to the donkey’s back. They walked the hills.
Those stone roads took them to village after
village of Turkish young, shouting for barley
sugar. Louder than a cornering wind,
those children surrounded their fathers. How
they implored, mouths wet already with sweet
toffee they wanted so loud valleys ring.
Even now; the wind wants sugar candy.

That young boy who scaled (leading the beast or
following after) those lava hills knew
climbing was easy. What the others—
the children of that village never knew—
was that he did not eat candy. That sweet
taste, he bartered away so his people
ate bulghar and rice all the cold winter long.

His dying father refused fresh yogurt,
told him: “You live to feed others! Eat this.”

SOFIA KONTOGEORGE KOSTOS: WITNESS©

Like a ghost, his silhouette hovers
tall through the street shadows of Smyrna––
until all that will be left
will be traces of its skeletal remains.
The beloved Doktor’s vision is blurred by tears
and the smothering smoke.
He’s overcome by the stench of burning flesh,
the moans of the dying, the piercing screams,
and the destruction surrounding him!
Aghast he gazes down at his empty hands
that until these days healed the sick
and held the newly born.
Now, his fingers tremble.

Picture of Smyrna, 1922, source unknown.

Not to be obvious,
he exits his home wearing his fez
and summons his courage
needing to understand the
encircling devastation:
Elisa his wife; their children,
Hatcher, Sirarpi, Krikor,
Hovhannes, Vartouhi––
their youngest is one;
Araxi their housekeeper,
and their neighbors.

Night after night,
from the end of August through September,
he ventures into the side streets,
secretively scrawling
into his journal:

Wednesday, the 13th
I see a Turk, he thinks I am one of them,
he says to me,
“We did what was due; you turn back.”

The Turk, who assumed an active role
he advises me not to advance,
but to turn back. I answer, “Very well”
with the attitude of someone who understands
the situation. I stop for a moment to distance
myself from the Turk–– to avoid conversation.

At last, the Doktor finds escape from this hell.
Except for his smoke scarred journal,
nothing remains of his worldly goods.
As he embarks on the rescue ship
to unknown safe Greek shores,
he holds his wife, his five children,
and their housekeeper
with all his might, and hides his journal,
the lone witness to all he has seen
deep within his double vest.

Fifty miles far from the billowing black clouds over Smyrna––
in his home town of Akhisar,
Christians ––- ten from his and his wife’s family,
all were massacred!
Men, women, children;
butchered, hanged, machine gunned,
––the young pretty ones violated,
then dragged away to harems, and the young males
forced into slave labor battalions— were never seen again!
Their fatal mistake was to believe the empty promises of peace,
made by those who swore on the Koran.

––SOFIA KONTOGEORGE KOSTOS

WITNESS was inspired by Dr. Garabed Hatcherian’s journal. An Armenian Doctor - Garabed Hatcherian: My Smyrna Ordeal of 1922 Edited by his granddaughter, Dora Sakayan, Ph.D. Montreal: Arod Books, 1997. Translated into 9 languages––including Turkish. The Turkish publication was banned in Turkey; its publisher and translator have been repeatedly summoned to court and relentlessly fined.
Garabed Hatcherian, M.D. (1876-1952) held the position of general surgeon and gynecologist at The Armenian Saint Gregory’s National Hospital in Smyrna. (SKK)

Ralph Setian: [Rising like a spastic somnambulist]

Rising like a spastic somnambulist
I somehow manage to slip off
my underpants in the darkness,
tossing them into the corner...
And when I wake up in the morning
I am surprised and chargrined
to find a swarm of avid ants
voraciously lapping up
the still-moist, sticky semen.

The Beauty of Disaster by VERONICA PAMOUKAGHLIAN

This book is available as download as well as hardcopy. Click here to get the new poetry collection by VERONICA PAMOUKAGHLIAN.

Monique Avakian: Leave the Machine

and what of the white heat between us?

you feel it everytime I look at you
I hear it everytime you dream of me

that alive and glowing place between us

pure in intent
and
potentially destructive

a living warmth more silver than gold
ancient and evolving

an unmistakable sureness

handshakes and snakes
land mines and quakes
these are easy to glorify

but what of the will of the fledgling sprout…
the patient trust of the dying star…

a treasure can not always be held

what is it
exactly
that we’re looking for?

something beyond incredible to behold
something elusive in its measure to unfold
something so far, untold

Be peace. Be bold. Our hearts know enough of the cold.

Monique Avakian: My Country Right or Wrong

beds built under bridges
the old and sick, just cast aside
infants take their Ritalin
women shun their tides

bosses ride in motorcades
thugs lurk behind black glass
bank guards hold machine guns
flash the sign, boy, you’ll get past

yeah, boy, you get to pass
in my country, right or wrong
trained to follow orders
you can’t dream or build a song

you know how push a button
you know how to fill in dots
you won’t know what hit you
when your weary body rots
in the war
it’s all for war
that’s what they made you for

TV sells you “booty”
keeps you high on sugar and fries
game cube pulls you under
you can’t let go, even to cry out

leaders twist and shoot up poison
colors flash to keep you pronged
when did a warning become controlling
don’t ask, just move along

boy, you better watch your ass
make like you belong
make a chain and follow orders
just pretend to be strong

you know how push a button
you know how to fill in dots
you won’t know what hit you
when your weary body rots
in the war
it’s all for war
that’s what they made you for

my country, right or wrong
my country, right or wrong

it’s our country, gone wrong

Veronica Pamoukaghlian: The Word

My blood is marked by genocide
on the two sides
of these Atlantic lines

My fate was sealed with the blood stains
of cotton workers from Marash
slaughtered by the ottoman
and the mixed blood
of conquerors
and massacred
of masters and estranged slaves

The rot of colonialism
lurks underneath
our 15 seconds democracy

My eyes were numbed
by what I hadn´t seen
after the dirty war was over
after the bowels of the Earth
had vomited
bones in Uruguay
lifeless infant mummies
in the soft heart
of Africa

after the tide brought in
the loot
of generals,
green men of power and no shame

My past was carved with knives
on children´s bones
in the mountains
of Leninakan
with hanged peasants
on the slopes of Ararat

My human pride was dumped
in Rio de la Plata
one summer night
in a death flight
that time when I
had learnt to sing
before I grasped
the word
The word was born
from the colonial rot
under our soil
and under Africa

The word was black
and cast a deadly storm
before the sun

The word was Genocide

Armine Iknadossian: Beirut Blues

Remember the curtains Mother?
How they wrapped their arms
around the sofa on windy days,

how the blue-tongued ocean below our window
licked the painted toes of French tourists in bikinis?

Remember tea parties on the balcony,
the red dress you sewed for me
right out of the latest issue of Burda magazine?

And then the missile's cry,
how its whiny trajectory fooled us

as it lit up the summer sky during rooftop dinners.
They weren't for us, were they?

But that day we hid behind the sofa,
you and I, they were for us that day,
the day we ran down the stairs

to the damp and dim below,
down where death could not reach

and the breath of life was quick at our feet.
I remember more,
but let's talk instead about

the dancing curtains, the wide mouthed sea,
porcelain tea cups and Father coming home.

Esther Heboyan: BUS OF THE HEART

Click here for the audio segment BUS OF THE HEARTread by Lola Koundakjian.

among the places
where he’s done time
there’s a street
i know
i see
every time i ride
Bus number 43

heading North (to work)
an Eastern lane
marked “Bus”
carries
Bus number 43
to 74, Rue Taitbout
Paris

how unwonted
i ponder
the day of the mustache
up on the fifth floor
the world’s a laughter
will the Manboy
i wonder

will he
or will he not
peek out his Parisian window
stroll out that perfect door
in the slack water of dawn
and no horizon
dear or sleek

enters
every sad bureau
more than sad boutique
a Manboy
to tell
(the same world, unfinished)
that after all

there shall be times when
your heart
shall be
unable to give
your tongue one word of speech
to utter*

Boghos L. Artinian: Unwitting-vehicle bomber

Boghos Artinian is a 65 years old physician practicing in Beirut since 1968, and writing poetry since 1982. This poem has appeared in the website Poets Against War.

The perpetrators were terrorists sly,
For they chose someone who didn't love to die;
A spinster who happened to work at a site
They wanted to penetrate and ignite!
While she slept they booby trapped her car,
And next morning they watched the embassy afar.
When her car, unchecked, entered the compound
They blew it up; just bits of her were found.

Veronica Pamoukaghlian: INDIAN KINGS

I'd seen them
in the galleys
under the dust
and bleach

cleaners, servants
lesser men
who made my bed
and made me feel ashamed

I saw them dance
on INDIAN night
after a fourteen hour day
under the rugs

I saw them frown and sweat
on elevators
and fear me
because I had more stripes
upon my vest

And just today
a picture
an Indian honeymoon

I recognized the faces
but they´d no uniforms

Princes, Kings
and colourful
jewels, women
the happiness
of being yourself

Kings they had been
in INDIA

KINGS with their turbans
their tunics, silk and threads of gold

with the same faces
of the galley boys
and their dead souls

I never thought
those small dark men
who learnt Yes sir, before they learnt their name
and scrub and dust
and dance like girls
on Indian day

Could have been KINGS
one day in INDIA
not long ago

And of me too,
a Wanderer
I thought perhaps
I´m nothing now
in Spain
or in America

and once perchance
I´ve been
a King
in Uruguay

and I forgot

the regal music
the regal dance
CANDOMBE
my soul
the thing I am

Ralph Setian: [You are my friend, Lizard]

You are my friend, Lizard --
do not be afraid --
you are mon semblable.
More than any other tiny creature
you are welcome

You are my frère d'armes --

and my harrying human heels
we will decimate
the insect-cohorts.

with guest, local poet LORY BEDIKIAN

THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 5, 2009 - 8:00PM

Arpine Konyalian Grenier’s work has been described as a mosaic of narrative that takes us out of our provincial concentration on American life to encompass broader social and geopolitical issues with a decidedly urban and postmodern sensibility. Her poetry and translations have appeared in numerous journals including several anthologies.

while light slowly if it were
ordinary language terrain
life riding over

without the need to establish voice

disclosing addressing
negotiating for place

Quote for the Month of October

Common speech is what we hear when we do not listen. Common words are what we use when we do not think. Everything else is poetry — the restless, bountiful, uncommon common. And the poem itself is a reminder, a way of changing "I've heard it all before" to "I may never hear this again."

Alec Ekmekji: Just like that

Click here for the audio segment of Alec Ekmekji's Just Like That read by Lola Koundakjian.

Just like that
he found a girl,
he found a riverbank,
just like that
she lay her back
on the knowing grass,
just like that
he found her lips
he found her buttoned blouse,
just like that he married
he married someone else.
Now sometimes she sees him
at the riverbank,
looking for loose gold buttons
in the dew on the grass.

This poem has appread in BIRTHMARK, a bilingual anthology of Armenian-American poetry. Published by Open Letter, 1999.

William Michaelian: Some Mornings the Silence

Some mornings
the silence
in this house
is so profound,
I wonder
if my mother
will ever wake again.

Will I be the one
who finally opens
her bedroom door,
or will she?

Eight o’clock, nine,
ten — and yet instinct,
or something like it,
tells me it will not
end this way.

If her mind
doesn’t wake her,
her body will.

When at last I hear
her toilet flush,
I feel the strangest
sense of grief.

I feel the pain
of disappointment,
and the joy
of pure relief.

William Michaelian: The Sunlight on My Mother’s Face

These soft, newborn leaves remember the sunlight that warmed
my mother’s face, they bear the scent of soap and sweat and meals
rising from her skin, they recall the rough broom in her hand,
the mirror she wiped clean to reveal her sweet astonished childhood,
her father splitting wood with his patient care-worn axe,
her mother’s tired back, her wood stove, pies, and peaches,
the sparrows in the trees outside, barking dogs, tramps at the door,
hard green plums in spring, honey-white alyssum crowding the walk,
flour on the floor, fragrance, sound, voice, bone, spirit,
a soot-filled rail car bringing letters home, a lullaby for children
sleeping in their graves, a song for wise old men who have forgotten
their best friends’ names.

Who remembers everything? One clear moment is enough,
distilled by warm hands and taken from a cup, cradled by the tongue,
whispered, swallowed, praised, sung, nourishing the blood,
calling from the marrow, an orange-scented breeze, the hum of bees,
nerves, fingertips, muscles, toes, a solemn recitation of what no one knows.
One clear moment is enough, for the petal of the rose pressed soft against
a young girl’s lips, for the story composed by the drama of her senses,
of a brave ship lost while still in sight of home, her mad crew guided
by unknown constellations.

Now she is eighty-three, and the sunlight on her face remembers me.
It remembers the boy I have been and will never be again, caresses the lines
and fences with eyes blind to my disgrace, inscribes a message on the wind,
seeks, blesses, grieves, attends, ceaseless in its toil, eager to begin,
the sunlight on my mother’s face remembers me.

Nayiri: In the Fall of Life

Golden leaves, sweaters and chills
Winter sliding down the hills
Arthritis, medicine and pills
Are somebody else’s ills.

Attaining three scores and ten
(when did this aging happen?)
Hit me like an absurd farce
Who? Me? I don’t grow that fast.

Shaky knees that disengage
Bones turning to cartilage
White hair growing on my crown
Are happenings I disown.

My heart beats much louder now
More than I care to allow.
I get sensational thrills
Sans those damned blood pressure pills

And if I were not so shy
I would write to Santa dear:
“Next time, please, when you stop by,
Knock louder, ‘cause I can’t hear.”

Robert H. Sarkissian: A Choice and a Breath

To serve is a choice and a great joy and fire
But it takes a while and a while to take
A slow-cooking slaking of passionate thirst
Like walking for miles to a wandering lake

To yield is a death but a life and a breath
When birthed it will give in its natural state
And one of the choices will fall by the side
No longer a voice that would have any weight

Violet Grigoryan

Midnight

Translated by Margarit Tadevosyan-Ordukhanyan

And the full round moon enters the stage, hand-painted porcelain, a skilled puppet-master of sorts, spreading its fingers, pulling the cords….

Enchanted by it, everything rises: the agile male organs, the waters, the dogs and the sleep-walkers.

Rising higher and higher, higher than the sand, higher than the woman, higher than the roofs, higher than the bridges, higher than the taverns, higher than the trains.

But I cannot raise so much as my arms….

But I cannot raise so much as my eyes….

But I cannot raise a word from a word.

I walked on until the passing of the rose, but it pricked my heart with its final thorn.

I walked on closer to the thicket of the pines, those dreamy trees that gently swayed in their green orgasm, but then I tripped on their pinecones and fell.

I danced the dance of death on ice, but all I got for it was a head of cabbage on a trey.

I gave some gold to a money-changer, and he gave me colored shreds of paper for them; I’ll use them all to make a dress that covers me and fits my body.

I looked and discovered that I was crying.

I looked and discovered that I was sad.

* * *

I close my eyes, it makes me sad; I open them-still makes me sad; I turn my head, it makes me sad; I light five matches-still makes me sad; in the street, right under my window, Maret is haggling passionately; I open a book and lo, a white deer skips down the page, and its branching horns get tangled between the lines; a thrush hops from one branch to another, waiting for some sign of change; the wild boar runs around the meadow for a couple of lines, stomping out the undulating grass; the fireflies declare, let there be light; the mole and the owl just sit in one place, dazed; the light of my solitary candle flickers (in the dark Maret’s still haggling); the woodpecker says knock-knock; the snipe-it’s no dope-doesn’t answer, it knows better than that; the thrush hops from one line to another, waiting for some sign of change; the deer shakes its horns free, disentangling them from the lines; the boar stomps out another bush-just watch it gloat; the field mouth peeks out to check what the commotion is to find the same ham wreaking havoc, and nibbles on another leaf, safely hidden from the unicorn’s eyes; the thrush waits for a little longer, despairs of change, and moves to a different branch. Suddenly I cough; Pan notices me and approaches me with joy, he touches my hair, plays his flute for me; the wind gently ripples my curtains (outside, Maret is still haggling); the nymphs bring me offerings of ornaments, blush and hair-dye, and sandalwood oil; they give me charms, a silk kerchief for my hair, they fasten a blue bead to my arm to ward of all the evil eyes, they take me to the bank of the river and bid me to look, beware, don’t you fall asleep, look closely….

The black water came, I didn’t go in,

the ash water came, I didn’t go in,

the rust water came, I didn’t go in,

the gold water came, I washed my hair in it,

the milk water came, I washed my face in it,

the rosewater came, I washed my body in it,

and when the clear water came, I jumped into the river, frolicked with a mermaid, sang in the water, splashed in the water (under my window, Maret yelled out-what miscreant is dumping dirty water?), the wind ripped the kerchief off my hair, the water washed away my sandals, I rolled around in the grass, my head and feet completely bare; the forest spirits fancied me, they pampered me, caressed my face, they licked my belly-button clean, they pressed their luscious breasts to mine, they wrapped my wanton thighs in theirs, they tickled me with their lithe tongues, they turned me into a soft mass, just spread around in the grass. Then suddenly, I realized that I had something to tell, so I stood up, swayed in the wind-a blade of grass, then, as I began changing into a singing re…. whack, under my windows someone slapped our Maret, you stupid bitch, why are you shoving me these dollar bills? Pan blew up a storm, the pages got mixed up, and I stayed like that, a centaur-half-reed and half-Violet. What kind of a reed-pipe would I make now? I shut the window, sad. I shut the book, sad.

* * *

I don’t speak reed very well

For Violet doesn’t come much,

Yet I still feel I must somehow tell

The story of my sorry life,

Marets, go forth with your laments,

Bemoan my luck, bemoan my fate.

At midnight, sharp, my finger died.

I went outside, sat on my porch,

Let myself go, and cried and cried,

Over my finger and my life.

My daddy raped me at some point,

My mommy went and sold my ring,

My brother, well, he called me “witch,”

My sisters all derided me,

My lover left me with a child

Inside my womb and left one night,

Our weird neighbor came to me

And sa… and spat upon my face.

My uncles stuck me with sharp pins,

And then they rolled me down the hill

Inside a barrel, lined with nails,

A cozy coffin made of oak,

My nephews gave me as a gift.

My friend seduced my fiancé,

My eldest gambled me away.

My young lame daughter pleasures drivers.

And to the sound of utter silence

My finger died today at midnight.

Marets, begin your loud laments,

Offer a prayer for its peace.

* * *

I have not talked or laughed for seven years

I have done nothing but spin yarn for seven years,

I have been weaving a cloth for seven years,

I have been stitching shirts for seven years,

But none of the swans turned into a brother,

Nor does the prince ever recognize me,

He doesn’t look into my eyes or at my hair,

He just keeps checking the size of my shoe….

In the ashes, in the ashes,

In the ashes I will hide from him.

* * *

But I, I have seen a rose closing shut its eyes, stretching its long spine, placing its own head on the sacrificial stone; it whispered to me, come and take my place.

But I, I have seen how the blood gushed out from the gates of man, washed all over me, and how multicolored warms wove their cocoons in my flesh and skin.

But I, I have wandered long in the winter’s chill, in my paper clothes, and that which I

sought was covered with ice; what my eyes could see, my hands couldn’t reach, what my eyes could see, my lips couldn’t touch, what my eyes could see, my nose couldn’t smell, what my eyes could see….

But I, with the leper’s bell tied around my leg, many times I’ve chimed, ring-ring, healthy babes, run away from me, ring-ring, wealthy dames, move away from here, ring-ring, look away, pretty little boys, ring-ring, unafflicted folk, ring-ring, the unrancored ones, ring-ring, the unworméd ones, the unscathéd ones…. How many times did that tinkle of forewarning shield me! But a deaf bee with a stealthy flight buzzes over me, probes me on all sides, wants to furrow me with its trunk of love; it will gather nectar from my oozing sores….

But I, after all, at the fortnight’s end, will recline upon a single water-drop, with my heart as bait; I will stretch my back, lie down, supine, with a blade of grass pressed between my teeth, and la-la la-la-la, undaunted by what’s passed.

And when the full moon appears, bang, up will go my penis, higher than the sand, higher than the rose, higher than the ash, higher than the flag, higher than the word, than the money-changer, the tragic and the farce, higher than my parents, higher than the sports, math and the commandments, higher than the curse….

High and higher still, higher that this whole, this entire trembling mass….

Robert H. Sarkissian: Booktellers

Books on shelves, on reserve, those that sell
hard and soft, spines and covers
diagnoses in chapters, science or characters
they sit and smell like musty cellars
worlds inside unto themselves
carried and borrowed, traveling onward
coming full circle and tumbling downward
beautiful pages of pulpous delight
yellowing corners, but lovely, and only
if I could understand or maybe remember
that which I read last year in September
I’d eat all the paper my stomach could hold
digesting the letters, and numbers, in bold
and cough up the words I love to recite
the words that deserve to be told I would tell

Robert H. Sarkissian: The Icon

In a room emptied
Light shone like fast heat on a road
The colors lucid
Sensuous fire flowed
Who would not have heard
Or could have ignored
Sound from another world
That always glowed

Archie Minasian: The Tiger Wind

The wind,
playing in the violets,
sprang upon me.

Oh! I thought,
if I could be so familiar
with her.

El viento,
