«Աշխարհի մէջ տեղ մը կայ ուր հիմա ամառ է՞»։

Հարցումը տեղին էր. այս աշնան առաւօտ, 

փողոցին վրայ, հովոտ ու ցուրտ էր ։

Բայս ինչպէ՞ս պատասխանել այդ հարցումին

առանց աշխարհագրութեան դաս մը տալու։

Տղան գիտէ՞ր որ կան հիւսիսային և հարաւային կիսագունտեր.

սորված է՞ր ցամաքամասերուն անունները,

գիտէ՞ր բեւեռներուն տեղերը,

երկիրներուն ու իրենց մայրաքաղաքներուն անուննե՞րը։

Երբեմն պարզ հարցում մը

պարզ պատասխանի մը պէտք ունի,

երբեմն ալ դասընթացքի մը։

The Zohrab Center was established through the generous gift of Mrs. Dolores Zohrab Liebmann in memory of her parents, and dedicated on November 8, 1987 in the presence of His Holiness Vasken I (†1994), Supreme Patriarch and Catholicos of All Armenians;  and His Eminence Archbishop Torkom Manoogian (†2012), Primate of the Eastern Diocese of the Armenian Church of America. Liebmann’s father, Krikor Zohrab 1861-1915), was a renowned author, jurist, humanitarian and community activist in Constantinople, who was among the first Armenian intellectuals killed in the 1915 Genocide.

Hiroshima

When I returned from Japan, a young acquaintance of mine said, “You went to Hiroshima? So, you’re been exposed to radiation!” That was the meanest thing anyone had ever said to me.

I went to Hiroshima on December 6th, 2005.
Sixty years after the artificial sun.

I arrived amidst snow showers,
To witness a destroyed city reborn.

When I informed my mother of my plans
She asked if I was depressed.

I told my travel agent I needed
To go to beg for forgiveness.

Not that I pushed the button
You didn’t push it either
[But] our collective unconsciousness did.

In an exhibit in this city*
I had seen the melted glass bottles

The fused coins and the frozen clocks.
There I saw much more,

Hollowed statues of Buddha
Images of people with burns

Their skin branded if
They wore patterned clothing

Wrist watches became microwave ovens
killing people with radiation sickness

Hiroshima’s boulevards today bear witness
To the shadows of humans who left by evaporation.

Statues erected by benevolent associations
For volunteer doctors and nurses

The roads leading to ground zero and the Peace Dome,
The only building still standing after the Atom bomb.

The Memorial cenotaph, the eternal flame and the Peace Bell
The museum filled with teenagers from nearby towns.

This was not an easy visit, nor should it be.
I walked to my hotel in silence.

Postscript
The only people who should be allowed to govern countries with nuclear weapons are mothers, those who are still breast-feeding their babies.

Աղմկոտ են Նիւ Եորքի փապուղիները,
Աղմկոտ են ու գարշահոտ,

Presentation of a New Book of Poetry by Lola Koundakjian

Lola Koundakjian, poet and curator of the online Armenian Poetry Project, will present her recently published collection of poems, La luna en la cúspide de mi mano/ The Moon in the Cusp of my Hand on Thursday, January 23rd at 7 PM in the Guild Hall of the Eastern Diocese of the Armenian Church of America at 630 Second Avenue. A Spanish/English bilingual collection published by Nueva York Poetry Press, this is Koundakjian’s third book of poems. Her previous books are The Accidental Observer (2011 USA) and Advice to a Poet (2014 Peru; 2015 USA).


At the event, Lola Koundakjian will read from her newest collection. She will also read some of her original Western Armenian poetry. Signed copies of the book will be available for purchase after the reading. A reception will follow.

Կը տեսնեմ քեզ ամեն կիրակի
երբ քովս նստած
կը հարցնես ամուսնոյդ մասին
առանց նկատելու
առանց յիշելու թէ
արդէն տարիներէ ի վեր
զինք չես …։

Կ՚այցելեմ քեզ ամեն կիրակի
երբ կը փորձես հանգչիլ, ու
շրջապատուած ընտանեկան
նկարներով, կը հարցնես
ո՞վ են այս կամ այն անձերը։

Համբերութեամբ կը կրկնեմ
բայց չես ճանչնար այլեւս՝
քոյրդ ու իր զաւակները
հայրդ ու մայրդ,
երբեմն իսկ եղբայրս,
ու կը նշմարեմ թէ

After a reading of Archaic Torso

A Sunday afternoon, the final lazy weekend of the summer, I escape to the cool, bright corridors of that art institution. I am in search of Apollo or Rilke.

In the Hellenistic and Roman wing I find Hermes, Eros, Heracles, headless torsos of young men and women, centaurs, athletes and heroes. I turn around each statue and sepulchre, reading labels and descriptions.

In desperation, I ask a guard but she’s clueless.

I search for him in a cubiculum nocturnum (i.e. bedroom), in galleries, in the faces and camera lenses of tourists, finally finding him through old-fashioned help, the humble assistance of the information desk clerk.

There are two Apollos here. One in worse shape than the other, one slightly taller, one still resting against a marble trunk, one with more genitals intact, more of the hip areas defined, with both feet, perfect toes and toenails.

The Japanese tourist photographs her friend grabbing, or is it covering, the genitals; I hear the guard laughing heartily. Men, women and children walk by, few stop by to look at the headless torso, few read the description, few acknowledge that THIS was Apollo, this WAS the god of music and poetry, son of Zeus, father of Orpheus, one of the twelve Olympians, Dii Consentes. Who cares for those lesser gods and heroes when Apollo is in the room?

And still, I don’t find Rilke, a man at least in some form or manner representing him, his essence, or a man who has read his work, a man aware of that dilemma called mid-career or life crisis.

I wonder if I tear a piece of paper, write in bold capital letters RILKE, and hold it up, will someone stop and chat with me, sit and read with me that poem, ask me questions about it, maybe exchange something about himself, a revelation found through this encounter.

If any answer to man’s inner quest is to be found on Earth, it could be at these feet, or another work of art, at this museum or another like it, in this city or another metropolis such as the many found on this or other continents.

And yet his torso

is still suffused with brilliance from inside,

like a lamp, in which his gaze, now turned to low,

gleams in all its power.

Alina Gregorian is a poet and artist, and author of the chapbooks Flags for Adjectives (Diez) and Navigational Clouds (Monk Books). Some poems can be found in Boston Review, Prelude, BOMB Magazine, among others. Alina lives in Brooklyn, NY and can be found here alinagregorian.com.

Christopher Atamian is a writer and creative producer of Armenian and Italian background and the grandson of Armenian Genocide survivors. He studied comparative literature as an undergrad at Harvard; television and film production at USC Film School and international marketing at Columbia Business School. Apart from creative endeavors and professional activities as a senior executive in leading media companies and consultancies (ABC, Ogilvy & Mather, Hill + Knowlton Strategies), Atamian has concentrated on community activism. He is the former President and a current board member of AGLA New York, and in 2004 founded Nor Alik, a non-profit cultural organization responsible for producing the First New York Armenian International Film Festival. Atamian also co-produced the OBIE Award-winning play Trouble in Paradise in 2006, as well as several music videos and short films. He was selected for the 2009 Venice Biennale on the basis of his video Sarafian’s Desire and received a 2015 Ellis Island Medal of Honor. He continues to contribute critical pieces to leading publications such as The New York Times Book Review, The Huffington Post, SCENES Media and The Weekly Standard. His first book of poetry A Poet in Washington Heights was published this year by Nauset Press and awarded the 2017 Tölölyan Literary Prize. He was born and still resides in New York City with his dog Chip.

Aida Zilelian is a New York City writer. Her novel THE LEGACY OF LOST THINGS was released in March 2015 (Bleeding Heart Publications) and was the recipient of the 2014 Tololyan Literary Award. Her stories have been published in over twenty-five journals and several anthologies. She has been featured on NPR, the New York Times, the Huffington Post, Kirkus Reviews, among other radio and print platforms. She is also the curator of Boundless Tales, the longest-running reading series in Queens, NY. She recently completed her second novel, The Last Echo Through the Plains. Her short story collection These Hills Were Meant for You was shortlisted in the 2018 Katherine Anne Porter Prize.

Lola Koundakjian is a regular reader in New York City and has appeared in four international poetry festivals. She curates a poetry reading series at the Zohrab Information Center in midtown Manhattan, and since 2006, has promoted Armenian culture with texts, translations and audio for the Armenian Poetry Project. She is the author of The Accidental Observer (2011 USA) and Advice to a Poet (2014 Peru; 2015 USA). շատ գեղեցիկ էր. քաղաքիս
հիւսիսային բաժնին մօտ՝
անտառի մը ծայրը կը լսեմ ճայ
մը, ուրիշ օրեր այլ գոյնզգոյն
թռչուններ, ատենը անգամ մըն
ալ կը տեսնեմ անծեղ մը,
արտոյտներ ու տարբեր
տեսակի շատախօս թռչուններ։

Գարունը անոնք
պատուհանիս մօտ կը սկսին
երգել։ Միակ լուռ բանը
մօտերս գետն է որ անխօս կը
հոսի հիւսիսէն հարաւ
հազարամեակներէ ի վեր։

Այս շաբաթ քաղաքապետը
մեզի յիշեցուց որ սուրճին գինը
սուղցած է։

Ես՝ Վարդանոյշ սուտանուն
բանաստեղծուհի, ընտանիքի
անդամներս, բարի միտ
բարեկամներս ձեր լաւագոյն
մաղթանքները կը յուսանք
ստանալ։ Ու մի՛ մեղադրէք զիս
քանզի անկողինս հազիւ
պաղած, կ՚ուզեմ ուրիշի մը
մարմնին բարձերը գործածել։

Գէշ խապարը թէզ տեղ կը հասնի
ՍԺԵ թուին, վեցերորդ
ամսուն, քսանմէկերորդ
օրը, ամրան եղանակին`
Ամբողջացուցի այս
յիշատակարանը Նիւ Եորք
նահանգի նոյն անուամբ
քաղաքին մէջ, երբ սաստիկ
տաք օրեր կ՚ապրէինք։

Քաղաքապետը մեզի կը կը
թելադրէ որ ջուր խնայենք։

Լուրերը տխուր են քանի մեր
աղօթքները մէկու մը ականջին
չեն հասած։ Հալէպը կ՚այրի
ինչպէս անցեալին Հռոմը։

Կ՚ապրինք նախագահ
Օպամայի օրերուն երբ
Պարսկաստանի հետ դաշինք
կնքեց, բանտարկեալներ
արձակեց ու խաղաղութիւն
հասաւ այս ափերուն։ Ցաւօք
սրտի որոշ քաղաքներու մէջ
թշնամին ներքին հրէշն է ո՛չ
օտարը։

Փոքրիկ Զաքարիային
ծնունդէն առաջ սիրեցի իր
հօրեղբայրը ու երկար
սպասեցի որ սէրս
փոխադարձէ բայց մէկ տարի
ու վեց ամիս յետոյ կնունքին
ժամանակ երազիս մէջ
Կոմիտասէն երկտող մը
երգեցի իրեն յիշեցնելու՝
Աշուղի պէս խա՛ղ ասա,
Բլբուլի պէս տա՛ղ
ասա…

ստանալ եւ սիրոյ ցաւերուս

Ոչ ոք մարգարէ է իր սեփական երկրին մէջ
ՍԺԵ թուին, իններորդ
ամսուն քսաներորդ օրը,
աշնան եղանակին՝
Ամբողջացուցի այս
յիշատակարանը Նիւ Եորք
նահանգի նոյն անուամբ
քաղաքին մէջ երբ սաստիկ
անձրեւներ կը տեղային ու
աշնան վերջին պտուղները
փճացան։

Երեք դար է բարեկիրթ
դասակարգի կիները
համալսարան կ՚ուսանին բայց
տակաւին հաւասար չենք այս
հողին վրայ. միմիայն
հաւասար ենք մահու
ժամանակ։

Քաղաքապետը մեզ կը
զգուշացնէր որ աղքատներուն
թիւը ու կեանքին սղութիւնը
բարձրացած են։

Քանի երկիրներ այցելած եմ
որոնք այսօր փճացած են
կռուի, սովի ու երկրաշարժի
պատճառաւ։ Անէ՛ծք անոնց
որոնք պատերազմներ կը
քաջալերեն ու այդ հարուստ
մարդոց որոնք պատերազմ կը
պատճառեն առաւելի
հարստանալու համար։

Աշխարհը ծով ա, մենք ծարաւ ենք
ՍԺԵ թուին, տասներկրորդ
ամսուն, քսանմէկերորդ
օրը՝ ձմրան եղանակին
Ամբողջացուցի այս
յիշատակարանը Նիւ Եորք
նահանգի, նոյն անուամբ
քաղաքին մէջ, երբ սաստիկ
պաղ օդեր կ՚ապրինք։

Քաղաքապետը մեզ կը
զգուշացնէ որ առանց
կրակարանի ու փայտի պիտի
մնանք ձմեռ մը եւս։

Այս ամիս պիտի ճամբորդէի
դէպի ովկիանոսին միւս ծայրը
բաց անակնկալներ գէշ օդի
պատճառաւ ու երկա՜ր
ձիւնամրրիկէ մը վերջ
փակուեցաւ օդակայանը ու
հազարաւոր մարդիկ մնացին
առանց օգնութեան։

I.

Olaj nélkül nem világít a lámpás

Az Úr 2015. esztendejében, a harmadik hó 23. napján, tavasszal

New York állam hasonnevű városában írtam e kolofont, ma reggel, gyönyörű hajnal után. Az északi városrészben, az erdők alatt tisztán hallottam a kék szajkó és egyéb színes madarak hangját, időnként szarkát, pacsirtát, más cserfes madarat is láttam.

Tavasszal az ablakpárkányra szállnak. Egyedül a folyó csendes, mely sokezer éve csörgedez északról le, délnek.

A héten a polgármester figyelmeztetett bennünket: megdrágult a kávé.

Én, Vartanoush, pszeudo-költő, családom, jóbarátaim körében számítok az önök jóindulatára. Ne hibáztassanak, ha ágyam hűvöse ellen egy másik testre hajtom fejemet.

II.

A rossz hír gyorsan terjed

Az Úr 2015. esztendejében, a hatodik hó 21. napján, nyáron

New York állam hasonnevű városában írtam e kolofont, a ránk törő melegben. A polgármester arra kért, takarékoskodjunk a vízzel.

Rettenetes hírek. Imáink hiábavalók, Aleppo lángokban, mint hajdanán Róma.

Obama elnök idején élünk, aki a perzsákkal hadifoglyokat felszabadító szerződést írt alá és elhozta a békét. Sajnos van, hogy az ellenség a határon belül tanyázik.

A kis Z---- születése előtt nagybátyját szerettem, érzelmeim viszonzására vártam. Másfél évvel később, az unokaöcs keresztelője küszöbén álmomban Komitas dúdolt és eszébe juttatta, hogy csellón játsszon, mint egy trubadúr, és fülemüleként verset daloljon.

Én, Vartanoush, pszeudo-költő, családom, jóbarátaim körében számítok az önök jóindulatára. Szerelmi fájdalmam okán ne szánjanak, magányos emigráns vagyok, távoli partokon.

III.

Senki sem próféta a saját hazájában

Az Úr 2015. esztendejében, a kilencedik hó 21. napján, ősszel

New York állam hasonnevű városában írtam e kolofont, az esős évszakban, amikor a gyümölcstermés utója tönkrement.

Az elmúlt három évszázad során a felsőoktatásban nők számára is megnyílt az út, de férfiakkal csak a halálban lehetünk egyenlők.

A polgármester figyelmeztetett bennünket, hogy több a koldus és hogy a megélhetési költségek ismét növekednek.

Sok országot bejártam, ahol most harc, éhínség, földrengés pusztít. Szégyen háborút kezdeményező vezetőink fejére, és az azokat támogató, nyerészkedni vágyó gazdagokra.

Én, Vartanoush, pszeudo-költő, családom, jóbarátaim körében számítok az önök jóindulatára. És ne feledjék az önök idegen partokra szakadt, régi osztálytársát.

IV.

Hatalmas óceán a föld, de szomjazunk

Az Úr 2015. esztendejében, a tizenkettedik hó 21. napján, télen

New York állam hasonnevű városában írtam e kolofont, a ránk törő hidegben.

A polgármester figyelmeztetett, hogy ismét kifogyhatunk a tüzelőfából.

E hónapban utaznom kellett volna, de a rossz időjárás és a sorozatos hóviharok miatt a reptereket lezárták, emberek ezrei ottrekedtek.

Én, Vartanoush, pszeudo-költő, családom, jóbarátaim körében számítok az önök jóindulatára. Köszönjék a Szent Kereszt templom plébániai tanácsának, hogy a Szent Szűzanya ünnepén költeményt rendelt.

Bocsássanak meg hiú írnokuknak, mert jó volt a bor, hosszúak voltak az éjszakák, és ne feledjék az önök New York városába szakadt régi osztálytársát.
