Կ'ուզեմ որ ըլլա՜մ ցորենի արտին
Ծաղիկը կարմիր՝ գաւաթ արեւին,
Հասկերու բաշին մէջ պահուած ճըպուռ՝
Խըմե՜մ կէսօրուան լոյսը լիաբուռ:
Ըլլա՜մ գիւղի հին կամուրջ մը փայտէ...
Մամռապատ աղբիւր մ' որ հազիւ կ'երգէ.
Գեղջուկին կաւէ ամանը բարի՝
Որ քաղքի ծարաւն ալ մէջըս մարի...
Ըլլա՜մ կուրծքի զարդն աղջըկան բոպիկ,
Բակի տղէկ մը՝ նայո՜ղ հանդարտիկ,
Փուշի մը ներքեւ խոնարհիմ ու լամ՝
Որ քիչ մը գոնէ իմ ցաւըս մոռնամ...

Rain undoes the stone
unfastens grass.
Nothing is permanently
attached to bone.
Neither epoxy
not promises last.
But I keep those inflections
you telephoned to wear
with your frown on rainy days.
There is another you
I have invented from your name
and cemented to my bones forever.
let rain say nothing stays.

1.
To understand
the western dialect
you must breathe in
the heavy-air
of the Mediterranean
and eat the pink flesh
of a ripe apricot
while I speak.
If the apricot
is not truly ripe
you will need two.
2.
The eastern dialect
has nursery care
in greenhouses and
stonehouses.
Its long pale roots
grow so strong
that transplanted anywhere
its flowers change
the passing winds
into pauses
between Armenian songs.
