Զարեհ Խրախունի (1926-2015)

Երէկ գիշեր (27 Նոյեմբեր, 2015) իր մահկանացուն կնքեց 89 ամեայ պոլսահայ վաստակաւոր բանաստեղծ Զարեհ Խրախունին: 

Աստուած հոգին լուսաւորէ։

Armenian poet Zareh Khakhouni passed away at the age of 89 in Istanbul on Nov. 27. Khrakhouni (born Arto Jumbishian) was born in Istanbul on Oct. 26, 1926. After receiving his primary education at Istanbul’s Kapamajian School, he continued his studies in Vienna at the Mkhitarian Secondary College, from which he graduated in 1945. After returning to Istanbul, he studied philosophy, law, and literature at Istanbul University, graduating in 1951.  Khrakhouni went on to continue his education in Paris, studying literature and art history.

Khrakhouni’s first published poem was “Haghtanag” (“Victory”), which appeared in the Mkhitarian Alumni Association’s journal in 1948. From 1952-1958, he taught philosophy, psychology, and Armenian language at Istanbul’s Esayan School. He also taught at Getronagan Lycee, where he was also the vice principal.

During his career, Khrakhouni published several collections of poems, articles, studies, reviews, editorials, and translations—mostly of contemporary French literature. Beginning in 1958, he served as the editor of Istanbul’s “Toh” Armenian literary journal. Many of his collections of poems, including Donagark (“The Celebration Order”), Tyutsaznahantes (“The Parade of Heroes”), Kar Gatilner (“Stone Tears”), Yes Yev Urishner (“I and Others”), and Nshmarner Myus Yeresen (“Glimpses from the Other Side”) have been awarded several literary prizes over the years. In 1989, Khrakhouni was awarded the St. Sahag-St. Mesrob medal from Catholicos Vazgen I.

Khrakhouni was also the recipient of Hamazkayin’s Anahid Literary Award, the AGBU Alek Manougian Cultural Foundation Award, the Elize Kavoukjian Literary Award, the Haygashen Uzunian Literary Prize, as well as the Movses Khorenatsi Medal of the Republic of Armenia, and the Armenian Patriarchate of Constantinople’s highest Medal of Honor.

Khrakhouni will be laid to rest on Dec. 3 at Beyoglu’s Holy Trinity Armenian Apostolic Church, in a national funeral service officiated by Archbishop Aram Ateshian, General Vicar of the Armenian Patriarch.

You and I 

sit across time

still

we know when we start

there’ll be no time.

You and I with gigantic

something between us

that’s gathering

but is never to be touched.

It climbs into every corner

It slips into the creases

It ticks in your and my veins

It rattles in your and my stomachs.

Only the long finger fidgets

and the clock inside us

fully winded

begins to urge.

it’s the other finger 

that matters

the one that tells us

where we’re at

Պիտի կերտե՛մ ես կրկին քեզ քերթուածի մը նման,

Տուած մեր հին քարերուն բոցէ շաղախն արիւնիս.

Պիտի ժայթքիս լուսագեղ դուն ինչպէս նո՜ր, անմահ Բան՝

Պանդուխտի սե՛ւ օրերուս երկունքէն վերջ տանջալից...

Հողին վըրայ հայրերուս, ուր արեան տաք մո՜ւխ է դեռ՝

Բոլորի՜ն դէմ դուռըդ բա՛ց պիտի ըլլայ շարունակ

Եւ լեցընեն պիտի քեզ ամեն առտու, երեկոյ

Շէնշող քրքիջ ու զրոյց, երգերու ձայն ու նուագ,

Բայց եւ խաղա՜ղ, լո՜ւռ պահեր՝ մտերմութեան ու սիրոյ:

Եւ երբ անցնին առջեւէդ աղջիկ, տղայ, փոքր ու մեծ՝

Նեղ տեղերը հովի պէս կտրող անցորդին

բիւր բարեւներ, բիւր ողջոյն.

աւաղ, զայն ճանչնալու չհասայ.

չեմ գիտեր հիմա՝

անցած տեղը ուրիշ անգամ կը դառնա՞յ

ետին մոռցած թիւ մը, իր մը, գոյն մը, շունչ մը ման գալու

ձայնի մը շեշտը դնելու։

So humble and stubborn

crumbling, but upright

Միտքի անծիր սլացքներէ՞ն,
տիեզերքը շրջող, երազը շնչող...

MUSINGS


Did all reverie sprout
from the deep surges of the soul
on the wing, smiling?

Melding sorrow and smile
from experiences sweet and sour…?

From the unfettered flights of fancy,
flipping the cosmos, respiring dreams…?

From the fleeting days
skimming the founts of countless forays…?

Or, from a simple, sallow desire
With a thrusting pathway…?

With burgeoning of colors galore,
the mind’s meandering
does not remain in the attic,
it erupts through the walls,
gathering the gleams of resolve
and throwing light on the fog-bound road,
becomes the very life of existence.

With life, it sprouts new pathways
for all future reverie.

INCARNATION

It is autumn.
I am here among nature,
where hues bud through greenery
and life radiates with colors.

I have entered the mystery
seeking the old creation –
the secrecy
of juvenile world’s observation
that had woven the itinerary
of the future hesitation
and the reverie
that sailed on
to all corners of creativity.

Through the mystery
mysteries are born,
the old world makes its entry
offering a budding wish
to the mystery.

It is autumn…
Is it the moment to construe,
or merging of mysteries old and new,
or a course of improvised hues?

The past reflects in the newly viewed
with its finely-tuned hues –
life is the incarnation of mystery.

Introducing Sevan Haneshian-Bedourian

Sevan Haneshian- Bedourian was born in Kessab, Syria. She graduated from Ousoumnasirats Armenian High School in her town then received a Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration from Tishreen University. She also holds an Associate degree in Armenology from Karen Jeppe Armenian College in Aleppo.

Sevan was a member of the Armenian Syrian Writers Union. She moved to the United States with her husband Rev. Fr. Karekin Bedourian. They have two daughters and live in Orange County, CA.Sevan's poems have appeared in various Armenian newsletters, magazines and yearbooks: Yert, Aztag, Kantsasar, Gamar, Shavigh, Karoun, Narcis, Hayrenik and Asbarez.

Լուռ է գիշերը…
Ակնախտիղ աստղերը կ՛աւետեն
ճշմարիտ երջանկութիւնը,
արտասուքը կը միաձուլուի ժպիտին
եւ աշխարհը կը նուագէ մեղեդին։

Ակնթարթ մը՝ անբիծ սիրտ մը
կը տրոփէ սրտի՛ն վրայ,
ակնթարթ մը՝ սէր մը

MOTHERHOOD 

Silent is the night… 

The dazzling stars herald
veritable delight and glee,
tears merge with smiles
and the world hums the melody.

For a mere moment a spotless heart
beats over the heart,
for a moment a pure affection
embraces all creation.

It is a soul surged from a soul,
A life entwining entire skies.

A pair of sparkling eyes,
offering hope and starlight,
spreading astral glory and delight.

Two tiny paws
cuddling the cosmos.

In the silent night…
An infinite light in each and every soul,
motherhood, wholesome and bright,
sweet enigma mystifying one and all.

Michael Minassian: THE GREAT DEPRESSION

In 1929, my grandfather’s boss 

at Hovanian Oriental Carpets 

ran out of money, so paid him his wages 

in brightly woven rugs from Armenia, Turkey,

Afghanistan and China, “Take this, home,”

the owner said, “d’ram cheega.”

So week after week he brought home carpets,

tacking them to the floors then the walls 

of the three bedroom apartment 

in the Bronx, using a large 

Persian rug as a bedspread, 

and another to protect the couch.

Then my grandmother covered 

the kitchen table, refrigerator, and stove,

the bathtub, toilet, and sink;

next, she stitched together clothes:

pants, shirts, underwear, and socks,

and convinced the cobbler down the block

to make shoes for the whole neighborhood;

then they lined the street and sidewalk

with carpets and tapestries, remnants, and rugs.

Soon you could walk barefoot on Bathgate Avenue,

while up in the apartment, my grandmother 

cut strips of fabric to bake or fry,

serving the pieces mixed with rice pilaf,

or toasting thin slices in the morning,

stuffing the rest into the coffee grinder

boiling it down as thick as Turkish coffee,

a stiff bitter tonic

served with salt and sand.
