Gregory Djanikian: Reconstitutions, Dispersions
There’s an easiness in how the Black River
parts around the rocks
then comes together almost as itself.
Foxes deep among the trees,
beetles underneath the stones,
I’d like to sense them the way bees sense
the ultraviolet shining in flowers
as if they were the flowers.
I smell the earth in a handful of earth,
touch the atoms I might one day be colluding with.
I look at honeysuckle and think goshawk,
finger a willow branch and say lodestone.
Maybe that loose amalgam I’ve called ghost
might reappear one day as a mourning dove
fluttering at night against my window.
I, I, I, (as in impermeable):
how much of the world
has seeped into that slender vowel,
the carbon from the stars I’ve bonded with,
the oxygen that makes up most of my body.
The cold is pimpling my arms, and maybe
a molecule of me might have been part
of some plump goose a thousand years ago,
the air it breathed what I’m breathing now.
The alphabet of matter
transposing itself into different guises.
The river I put my hand into now,
river I might become, imagining
the feel of trout gill, fox tongue,
taking me, drinking me in.

Gregory Djanikian: A Moment Without Objects
and I went from cupboard to bed stand
to coffee mug and desk to find what I thought
had been missing from my life
as though I could find it
where I had spent most of my hours.
I sharpened a pencil, I plucked
a guitar string, though nothing seemed to be
different from what had always been.
I said mountain then desert
as if the two contrarieties
would offer me a doorway
to a sideways landscape
though everything stood as it was
while I counted my breaths
without keeping track of the number.
Then there was a shrill sound
outside, a blue jay’s screech,
a shadow of wing tipping the balance.
Then the noise of the house readjusting its planks
and sunlight falling on the kitchen floor
and my fingers running slowly
along the smooth apparition of morning
without knowing why.
This poem appears in Gregory's latest collection, Sojourners of the In-Between. For more information about the author and his books, visit http://gregorydjanikian.com/book/sojourners-of-the-in-between/

Դու մարդ մի լոկ ;

Alan Whitehorn: An Old Woman Reaches Out
Tear upon tear flow,
one by one
seemingly forever.
But ever so slowly
each tear also releases:
first the fear, then the anger,
next the frustration,
and lastly the despair.
And so eventually,
one day a child is born.
An elderly woman’s
weathered hand
reaches out
and gently touches
a young infant’s
tiny fingers.
At that precious moment,
hope and love begin anew.
In touching the hand
of the newborn Anoush,
my metzmama Siroun
could see a better and happier future.
In the end,
love prevailed over hate,
and life over death.

Closing 2019 with Poetry
The Armenian Poetry Project is thrilled with the hundreds of new readerships we have received through our social media site on Facebook.
We are fast approaching our 14th anniversary, which we will celebrate, as we often do, quietly, reading poetry and happy to have achieved a few key points.
We remain the only website providing audio and text RSS feeds of poems written by Armenians, as well as contemporary authors on Armenian subject matters.
We continue providing all internet surfers free access to the webpage and audio downloads 24/7/365 via RSS, Twitter and iTunes.
We invite you to join our readers in celebrating APP's broad spectrum:
- independent research of the best Armenian poetry we can find
- gems by authors from the 19th century to the present
- introduction to out of print books, periodicals and digitized archives
- an index by authors and countries
- experimental works by contemporary authors
- different languages of expression, mostly Armenian, English or French, with translations provided whenever possible
This project is curated and produced by Lola Koundakjian in New York. To contact APP, send an email to: ArmenianPoetryProject[at]gmail[dot]com.

Literary Quote for the month of November 2019

Celeste Snowber: worried for love
Do you have your hat on?
what was your mark on your test?
did you do better than her?
did you turn off the lights?
what about the heat?
was it turned down?
did the bills get paid?
is the chicken defrosting?
was there enough color in
your cooking, or fabric, or paint on canvas
or your cloth cover on your book?
Did you remember – The Turks killed the Armenians?
Did you remember?
Remembering was a big VERB in my house growing up.
Did you remember?
My Armenian mother said, “You are my star
of miracles - I couldn’t have you
I finally conceived and bore you”
We are all miracles -
here, when we might have been
forgotten, not born, killed or bled in survival
Do you remember I love you?
Worried for love
