Drown Yourself in the Mirror
Drown yourself in the mirror a thousand times over—drown yourself
until the mirror will change into a flight of images
drown yourself in the mirror especially without a mirror at hand—
the emptiness will deepen your flight into the night, then
Drown into the labyrinth until the labyrinth
will change into the root of all saps
drown into the labyrinth especially without one—
the emptiness will lift you up from the infinite root of all thoughts, then
Drown yourself into solitude a thousand times over—
drown yourself in loneliness until a shape made of glass
will pass through the diagonal of all solitudes
drown yourself into solitude especially without solitude—
the transparency of the absolute will leave you all the more alone
on the shore with silvery lips
where only the naught could count your steps.

dublu, se jena să-i fie ruşine –
ruşinii-i prefera răşina neutră a uitării •

Cold grey and beautiful
send me off
to tame the tigers of you
to draw the punctured line of you
with the funny stink and the greedy breath of you
the old man’s mouth of you

Last night
when I was cooking
a lonely dinner
of potatoes
and Brussels sprouts
I burned my arm
in five places
in five minutes.
I didn’t ice it,
instead
I went on
cooking
thinking
waiting.
Blisters
showed up
like capsules
of shifting fish
glistening
beautiful
and then
I felt sorry
for my body
how it suffers
for years
and doesn’t know
how to stop.

LAS PRISIONES
I
Nada debe asfixiarse entre sus labios,
Ni el óxido aguado de las lunas,
Ni un estallido de claroscuros
Cuando los medios cautivan.
Aprisa,
Despacio,
Más aprisa.
Cambian los rostros y nada cambia.
Un capullo de capa negra
Rompe la magia en artera distancia;
Y eso es,
Sólo,
Pétalos como excusa y agonía desdentada.
II

First a gunshot then the sirens
murdering sleep at three a.m.
Beyond the sill an urban gulf
and fear greater than for oneself.
There is no war of us and them
in the eternal Barrio,
only a desperate status quo.
Worse, after all that noise, the silence.

For those who deny. to be the beheader is to ignore how deeply memories embed themselves in tomorrow's blood to be beheaded is to lose touch source of thought water's web sight of blood running away to be an observer on site viewing photos watching film willing or not is to be grateful you are not the victim your blood recording everything to be remembered victims' dried blood must be washed with clean hands in memories' open baskets of language

This place is birthplace Here entombed lies a fortress
here the sun is crushed
beams were raised with no leveler
here over six decades there are no masons
dark abandoned stones suddenly call your name
they bear signs
and they wait
Such is love
an intimate color bathes itself
like an Armenian matron whose mate
lives the wound of exile
it's a tale told since time immemorial
held sacred in a faith still maintained
here a new love grows mute when sonorities are cold
it is birthplace
The color of gray stone drowns
if it moved out of your sight
amongst your hopes
oh how it drowns within your eyes!
The wrinkled sun of aluminum foil
coughs in the consumptive day undoing its sides
and with the stillness of a felon jailed for six decades
the city melts down.
The gobble of turkeys sways behind shalwars
a gaze in stillness hides in the stones
a motionless gaze hidden in the stones…
Who died last month reciting Charents in his sleep?
We saw each other in the rain
nameless with crimson fire under our
blissfully closed eyes
and not unlike the deafening night
when the ocean roars from the thin walls of an oyster
we brought our yearning closer
and just like an addict’s needle puncturing a pain-pierced
membrane we injected our yearning
When birds bewailed in canals
trees were drowning in the whistling wind
of the colorless firmament
and manuscripts moldered in barrels
He killed himself
no one asked why
a poet was thirteen years old
another thirty
another seventy
He was killed leaving his last song
to the walls
he knew the walls knew how to dissolve
at times they knew how to be silent
A terrified grandfather in the twilight of the cellar
crossed himself a Pater Noster
Who died last night reciting Charents in his sleep?
This place is birthplace the lanterns are lit
coachmen and shepherds return
leaving the corpses of dead songs
to barren fields and bats
I say Ali get me a tea
There are three Armenians in the inn
further away there are crowds in vigil
reading tragedies
I say Ali get a trap mice are infesting this place
I shut the door I draw Charents's discreet countenance
over Sevak's flood-light face
in the same place I draw other other other faces
the wheel turns back
on the river's bank I see a rustic house
a muted maiden like a light-shade
a traveler ablaze on the Milky Way
who wrote spirited lines of shimmering thought
on the forehead of ancient poetry
and from the receding pastures of gore
approach the twin arms of the gallows
Ali I say what dog is this? Does it cry like this
every night?
Ali's clogs clatter in the sarcasm of
gloomy corridors
How do I move concept
and leave its specter in metaphor?
The open walls of oyster harken
every Friday when the muezzin goes up the minaret
to call God is great!
a train derails
in the pinched gaze of donkeys and packs
History worn out like a bundle left on the road to exile
The sun is crushed like the murdered poet
that consumptive blue-eyed mistress
with tawny arms hugging the poet's tomb that's not there
coughs
raucously
Relieving tattered lungs from pinholes she drips
the blood on me
on you
on all of us
All in all this bloody encounter
is not a farewell it smells of renaissance
not of High Mass or incense
A heart is hidden here A solid fortress seethes under ashes
This place is birthplace
