Adrian David: When The Euphrates Ran Red
Click here for an audio clip of the poem.
In a land south of the Black Sea,
we lived together in peace
for over a thousand years.
Then darkness engulfed us,
and life became a ghastly nightmare.
Reduced to second-class subjects,
we fell prey to the ruthless empire.
Brothers who lived alongside us
turned their backs in scorn,
owing to the entrenched bigotry.
Gendarmes stormed into our homes,
and dragged us out like animals,
leading us on death marches
across the desert as the sun blazed.
Countless skulls left scattered along the way.
Our homes were torched by the mobs,
devoured by the flames of hate.
Our women, abducted, raped, and killed,
succumbing to the fangs of supremacy
Our world turned upside down.
Innocent blood saturated the earth
as humanity came to a standstill.
Headless corpses lay in stagnant ditches,
letting the Euphrates run red.
Over one million futures were stolen.
Bidding a tearful goodbye,
we who survived fled our beloved homes,
stricken by distress and fear.
We lost our kin, our land, and our liras.
Yet, the one thing we never lost was our hope.
They strived to wipe us off the map.
But we rose from the ashes and thrived.
The prayers of our forefathers were not in vain.
We Armenians are still here, going strong.
Today, tomorrow, and forevermore.
(In memory of the 1.5 million victims of the Armenian Genocide)
Adrian David writes ads by day and poetry by night. His poems explore themes of conflict, existential crises, society, and everything in between, from the mundane to the sublime.

Elise Youssoufian: Կամաց, կամաց ("Slowly, Slowly")
Bathe each fresh cut in our rivers of tears.
Remember,
Take care of the root.
Kiss all the pain into shields of stars.
Remember,
Take care of the root.
Plant battered hearts at Mayr Hayasdan's feet,
Breathe truth beyond snag of Grey Wolves' gold teeth.
Be vessel, be witness, be living stone.
Sing us gutted, uprooted, but not alone.
We are.
We are.
We are still here,
Unbearably
Hungering for a taste of justice,
Making bread out of bitter fruit.

IALA’s (International Armenian Literary Alliance) Young Armenian Poets Awards announced
APP wishes to congratulate the three poets who won IALA's Young Armenian Poets Awards, as well as the poet who received an honorable mention. Below are their poems previously published in H-pem online magazine:
Sarkis Anthony Antonyan: I Meet the Gravedigger Burying a Soldier from Artsakh
Please, let me swallow the rain
to save this soil. He needs a good home,
a dry cavern to sleep.
I will not
be long, I promise.
His exoskeleton,
soaked in military pattern,
must take one last
breath of the world around it.
Let me see the red on
his chest one more time,
poked into
the plush like acupuncture,
almost deliberate.
Do you know
who is responsible for this act?
If not, I will tell you.
It was like
this. At home, we were glued to
the bottom of a well and stuffed with sand.
And I didn’t know him
until the
stones around us crumbled. Do not drop him
quick! I beg for you
to take my money
and give me his gun. Now the flashing medallions
on his chest darken,
the puckering ribbons
washing away without sound. How is this
the resolution
of an incomplete history?
I have removed my voice box
and placed it
on his heart. Salted,
immobile.
Now, let me say
to him:
You are missed.
You,
driven to the ground with honor. Perhaps
this exile wasn’t fated by the stars,
but rooted in the obligation of our clan.
Above us,
the clouds swirl gray and
inhale to accept the light. The Sun,
a bead of hope in their curtains
claiming the parting before it.
I do not think this story is over,
will never be. I am hesitant but:
here is our
farewell. And watch!
See how
this cavalier has
become a snowy dove,
rising through the ashes
and sunlight,
away.
Sarkis Anthony Antonyan is a student at Holy Martyrs Ferrahian High School Chatsworth, CA. He is 17 years old.

Sofia Demirdjian-Lara: I See You in the Jacarandas
I look at the Jacaranda tree
In front of my apartment
I hear your whispers
In the wind,
I feel your goosebumps
In the cracks of your skin,
And within them
I walk into the closet of a dream.
I can feel you smiling at me
Through the veins of the leaves
I see myself pondering
In the nest above your head
Feeding my children.
I am a bird
In another life
By your side.
I am one with the wind
Blowing kisses
In your direction
So that you can feel them
On your cheeks
So you can blush with the rosy pink
That used to hide
Within the dark forests
Of your makeup drawer
Isn’t it lovely,
How I can see my life
Now that you stand
Right before my eyes.
Isn’t it lovely,
How I can see myself
Now that you are gone.

Lucine Ekizian: Go Light on the Sweetness
Replacing the chamomile in my tea
With the compact flowers, with purple petals,
Hugging yellow centers,
Encompassing millions of
Beginnings, endings,
And middles.
I add the floral palette not to remember,
But to forget-me-not.
Does the honey cause a paucity of flavor?
My moral compass spins as
I pour in the sweetness.
I will not drink tea without honey,
I will not consume honey without tea.
As my soul lives there, and my body here,
I live in both worlds,
I live to acculturate.

Natalie Abadjian: o White (Honorable mention)
As I pick up my #2 pencil, I’m left with 5 full moons to choose from.
None of them represent me, I circle what is most “appropriate.”
White, compiling myself with genocidal colonizers hiding behind the name of my country’s religion, the first nation to accept Jesus as their savior.
Dismissing my 1.5 million ancestors,
ancestral blood,
lands,
tears,
5,000 18/19 year old martyrs.
Succumbing to the prioritization of oil over human life, propaganda, gaslighting, mocking, injustice, human rights violations, & blood money.
As idolized politicians camouflage their support through fraudulent systems, our hearts become vegan at the hopes of one day being recognized.
The history of Noah’s descendants being re-“written” while the silence that prevailed bomb shelters for 45 days lingers,
waiting for what once was.
As these words drip from a demoralized diaspora’s lips,
the juice from our pomegranate veins seep,
our black bushy unibrow(s) mending the bridges between our ancestors that we never got to do.
With mustard seed faith
we thumbtack our “unanswered” prayers to the front of our skulls.
we mournfully tread with cynicism as omnipotent as Ararat.
The same way you, unapologetically, fund terrorists who value my head, if beheaded, at $100, while indigenous Armenians come to a point where no word in the English vocabulary describes our emotions.
I’m unapologetic Amerikkkan school system,
for the next time you see none of the zeros filled in.

A video tribute to Zahrad's "The Woman Cleaning Lentils"
At APP we love the way poetry cross-pollinates the visual arts, film, dance and theatre.
The Woman Cleaning Lentils was selected for dissemination in APP in 2006, just a few months before Zahrad's death after a long and fruitful life as a poet.
Here's a presentation of "The Woman Cleaning Lentils" by the Hamazkayin State Theatre which was established in 1991 by the celebrated Armenian actor, Sos Sargsyan.

2021 Banned Books week is September 26 – October 2
The Banned Books Week Coalition is an international alliance of diverse organizations joined by a commitment to increase awareness of the annual celebration of the freedom to read. The Coalition seeks to engage various communities and inspire participation in Banned Books Week through education, advocacy, and the creation of programming about the problem of book censorship.
Censorship Silences Voices
For more details visit Banned Books Week.
American Library Association's Office for Intellectual Freedom tracks attempts to ban or restrict access to books. More than 273 titles were challenged or banned in 2020, with increasing demands to remove books that address racism and racial justice or those that shared the stories of Black, Indigenous, or people of color. As with previous years, LGBTQ+ content also dominated the list.
Visit your local bookstore and buy a book. Support your local library. Read a poem to a child. Organize a reading. Begin a lending book library.

History of Forgetfulness, Shahé Mankerian's debut poetry collection to be released in October 2021
Shahé Mankerian releases his critically-acclaimed debut collection, taking readers back to 1975 Beirut, where an un-civil war is brewing. Mankerian asks, "Who said war didn't love / the children?" setting the tone for a darkly humorous collection in which memories of love, religion and childhood are entangled amongst street snipers and the confusion of misguided bombings.
The collection is published by Fly on the Wall Press and may be pre-ordered now on Amazon.com

AUGUST
The sun wipes away tiredness from my shoulders
I can't stay here, because
summer is saying - “Pack your things,
let's go from here, we're already late.”
This is my time,
the real time -
to do that which must have been done,
and say that which must have been said.
The time of the word,
the time of salvation,
the raising of love's mighty arms-
the time to live,
and finally the perfect time
of my life,
in the nuptials of the Virgo Constellation.

Lola Koundakjian: The Hiroshima Project
Click here for the audio segment only of The Hiroshima Project read by the author, Lola Koundakjian.
Hiroshima
When I returned from Japan, a young acquaintance of mine said, “You went to Hiroshima? So, you’re been exposed to radiation!” That was the meanest thing anyone had ever said to me.
Lola Koundakjian
I went to Hiroshima on December 6th, 2005.
Sixty years after the artificial sun.
I arrived amidst snow showers,
To witness a destroyed city reborn.
When I informed my mother of my plans
She asked if I was depressed.
I told my travel agent I needed
To go to beg for forgiveness.
Not that I pushed the button
You didn’t push it either
[But] our collective unconsciousness did.
*****
In an exhibit in this city*
I had seen the melted glass bottles
The fused coins and the frozen clocks.
There I saw much more,
Hollowed statues of Buddha
Images of people with burns
Their skin branded if
They wore patterned clothing
Wrist watches became microwave ovens
killing people with radiation sickness
*****
Hiroshima’s boulevards today bear witness
To the shadows of humans who left by evaporation.
Statues erected by benevolent associations
For volunteer doctors and nurses
*****
The roads leading to ground zero and the Peace Dome,
The only building still standing after the Atom bomb.
The Memorial cenotaph, the eternal flame and the Peace Bell
The museum filled with teenagers from nearby towns.
This was not an easy visit, nor should it be.
I walked to my hotel in silence.
*****
Lola Koundakjian
Postscript
The only people who should be allowed to govern countries with nuclear weapons are mothers, those who are still breast-feeding their babies.

Milena Abrahamyan: To Arpi
the border sends clouds rolling down the lake from behind the mountain. the border hides the sun behind the mountain. the border is a night without imagination, it slowly crawls toward the house and presses itself against the walls. pushes the walls. clings to the windows. the border would have opened the window and thrown itself inside.
the clouds start to shiver and thunder in the dark. rain. the lights have also gone off.
and behind the mountain? is there no light there, too? where did the lights turn off first? here? or on the other side of the border? where did the clouds first growl? in this our side or in that their side? and where did more people become scared? and where did more people die? and where is it more? and where is it less?
the semi-destroyed houses in this place are not houses at all. they are disjointed ghosts. one is the left side of a ghost body. the other is the right side of a ghost body. one is the left of the right, the other the right of the left. yet it can be impossible to recognize the left and right sides of some of these bodies, they have transformed so much into bridges. they stand so strong on feet made of rocks. some are merely feet. not merely, their bodies are whole feet. standing strongly and ready never to leave this site, which they have left with all other parts of their bodies.
tangik flows profusely through the veins spreading all over my left leg. she doesn't let me forget about her. it hurts more in the summer, but the more I grow old, the more I feel the weight of her presence inside my leg. i put a pillow beneath her at night, so she could speak with my heart. and my heart, which merely lives inside my body, won't answer me. it speaks to my grandmother, who is her daughter, whose feet I have inherited.
i know nothing about tangik except that she escaped from van.
water approaches water. whispers "do not forget" and swallows the memory.
it's almost impossible to approach the lake here. the stability of the color green is an illusion. underneath the most green grass there is only water and mud.it pulls you under. it swallows the present with a past that has been swallowed. large white birds sit on the other side of the mud, right on the shore, and i must get to them.i must see them up close, i must be assured of their largeness and of their whiteness.
i deviate from the dry path, walking on rocks until i get to a part where there are no more rocks left beneath my feet. water flows. there is grass in spots, but i know that the green will swallow my feet if i take a wrong step. i go anyway, wallowing in mud, hoping that the feet i have inherited from my grandmother won't be swallowed, that my escape and my desire to get to where i am going also won't be swallowed.
the white birds stay in the distance no matter how much i struggle. they are inapproachable, intangible.
i decide to go back. my feet get stuck in new mud, even the rocks end up in the mud. the semi-destroyed houses stand in front of me when i am no longer facing the lake. ghosts stare at me through the phantom windows of the houses in the semi-dark. their gazes stretch toward the water. their eyes are filled with yearning for the lake. they too have no path toward the water.

Michael Stone: Six Glimpses
Entering the Arpa Valley
A faded sign “BISTRO”
Comley with thick shins and petite feet in blue shoes
She was selling white yoghurt by the road.
A poplar in a roadside meadow,
its leaves straining south to follow the wind,
Like a girl's long hair.
An old car picking its way down a very steep track,
all ruts and roots and rocks.
Billows of hill and deep gulches cleavage,
hills smoothed into green-yellow waves,
lakes of light green in the valleys,
houses below, monopoly pieces.
A village drowning in greenery
Yellow humps of harvested hay rolled up
Ingathered fields inlaid into the hills

Today, I am a body with no shadow and no soul
neither heavy chains nor shining wing,
like a wolf half starved to death
its chin turned to the moon unseen
howling its pain of life,
its burning desire to tear apart and devour
the warm blood of the deer, still alive …
But the answer to its howl
is its own echo returning,
and in despair with one wild heroic act
its ferocious teeth smash to pieces its paws,
as it devours its own life-blood.
Today, I am a body with no shadow and no soul.

Sarah Giragosian: OCD
To survive this exile, you will need
to hold court with the moon, store the memory
of its light in a mason jar for later.
Understand: there’s no field guide for this,
for what you will encounter, for when the sluice
gate of your mind opens, for the whetstone
of your doubts or the homespun loop of Whys?
Even when your mind seems to have nothing left
to plunder, What if, in a certain key,
snags at your heart again. If you could dare
the feral child of time to stop cuffing your wrist
just to drag you down another detour, you might
just make it, but you can’t let go.
To survive this exile, plan for the times
your thoughts will turn to snapping turtles;
it’s safest to approach from behind. Beware the tail,
the backlash and tango of open possibilities.
Keep close the sprig of secrets that grow
just below your chest pocket. You’ll need poetry
to face this, and metaphors like blinkering flashlights
to pass among your people if you return.

Peter Balakian: Near the Border
Gyumri, Armenia, 12/18/10
1.
Over brandy at breakfast we were talking about the Hellenic temple
at the edge of the canyon and the sun gods
who were worshipped there before the time of borders and decrees.
And then the priest came and we were off in a white van
that slid into the sky that was washed into gullies
slate-gray-tarnished-silver, then smooth as tarmac just poured, the way
12/7/88 poured on the screen with numbers when I was teaching in London
and walking Kings Road every day into early dark.
It wasn’t until we got to Gyumri and you put it casually over pizza: you
were in shop class shaving a hammer in a drill press and the floor began to slide.
2.
The neon lights glared over our faces as the amped-up
Russian waitress with green hair spilled Coke on the table.
I remember 12/7/88—the Albert Bridge lit up and the Thames smooth black—
as I watched walls come down on the screen;
a man carried a child through a gouged-out apartment,
three women passed with sacks into the stone-dust and became damask.
----
The neon lights in the pizza place on the square flashed on the window
as you pointed out the rebuilt school and hotel and the polished tufa stone
of fault-line resistance. Outside we picked up the teenage boy,
who settled into the front seat with the priest; a medley of punk
was a soft buzz off the rattling speakers, and the priest began talking to the boy
about how the body and soul must find a balance with each other,
if we’re to make our own destiny, God couldn’t do it all for you.
----
It came back to you in spurts—
how the floor dished you into the hall, the hammer shaving your hand as
a wall seemed to throw you into the street
where mattresses and chairs were sandwiched in crushed cars.
3.
I was chewing a pizza crust as we walked through abandoned fields of Stalin-
Under the Soviet eagles and busted windows along the tracks where Near East
trains once arrived with powdered milk and clothes for the orphans in the ’20s—
we kicked some rusted cans. Armenian soldiers went back and forth
at the checkpoints of a new history; three women with bags disappeared
into the fog along a chain-link fence.
4.
Memory is like the hammer you used to make coffins
all week with your uncle. When you found your cousins under
rubble they were speaking clearly through the dark—but that was early in the day.
On the BBC some faces moved along the street, the sun lit up punched-out
of Brezhnev buildings; in the morning I went to Heathrow to help load planes
news band and the voice of Roy Orbison, who was dead at 50, stayed in my head
5.
I was blind-sided by the sign—30 kilometers ANI
where the border slid into Turkey and the open plain was bleached—
a few boulders, some cattle and beyond the tenth-century city of Ani
was a mislabeled ruin cordoned off by barbed wire, a river, and some Turkish
6.
Between Armenia and Turkey, on the shrinking blue horizon, I saw,
a way out of confinement of a cigarette smoke-filling van?
I saw pillars dissolving under the dome of a basilica,
some women disappearing into the abyss of Saint Gregory
as we moved through gullies and blanched grass,
7.
and the van swerved to miss some cows on the road, grazed a fence.
The priest was going on about the soul made flesh—I almost
interrupted him to ask: "the soul not the word? "The boy nodded as he kept beat
to The Clash that was wavering from the dashboard—London was a buzz-saw drone,
hard sexual fetish, world-warning; the horizon was white-air gaps now,
a flaking Virgin on a conical roof floated in the sky, and then the winds changed—
8.
The priest said to the boy that Ani was the Florence of Armenia—“lost”—he said
didn’t have a covenant with God like the Jews did. The priest was upset—visibly,
9.
the van jolting over ruts,
the gray light giving way to fine snow coming west from Kars
10.
“Byron thought the Garden of Eden circled Ani and on south”—I interrupted
“Yes, yes, Byron learned our language”— he shot back
“Just a romantic orientalist,” I croaked—
“What?”— the priest turned and stared at me over the headrest
“You think anything’s left there? After 1915?” The CD player skipped on a scratch as
11.
the boy popped a can of Diet Sprite, and said something back to the priest in
before we stalled in a gulley and the van doors slid open and the cold rushed
us as we spilled outside with flashlights; the opaque white light blew back at me,
12.
the priest pulled his black hood up which flashed against the white outcroppings
The banging gonzo drums of time kept playing off the dashboard—
snow came like crazed moths.

Alan Semerdjian: An Image Writes the Poem
SOMETIMES it’s an image that writes the poem. I see the photo of a hole in the bombed ceiling of the Ghazanchetsots Cathedral in Shushi, a puncturing wound in the psyche, and immediately become a bird who flies in and out of that hole studying the way the light still, miraculously, shines through. Sometimes it’s a patch of audio from half a world away — the family gets outside the bunker for fifteen minutes a day, they say. Sometimes it’s the idea of a ghastly thing—glowing like a toy found in the woods—in a child’s hand. The new eruption of war and violence and death and destruction in Artsakh has shaken those of us who are far because of its ripples, but this shaking can only be a feint version of the shock felt by those who are living in the heart of it, those who are inextricably part of it. The poem is born in this witnessing and is an attempt at understanding what is, unfathomably again, inexplicable
I read this poem as part of Don’t Look Away: A Literary Series for Artsakh, hosted by the newly-founded International Armenian Literary Alliance (IALA) to raise awareness and funds for those under attack in Nagorno Karabakh, the black garden. You can view the first reading here, hosted by Olivia Katrandjian and featuring Peter Balakian, Carolyn Forché, Nancy Kricorian, Anna Astvatsaturian Turcotte, and Lory Bedikian, and the second here, hosted by Arthur Kayzakian and featuring Lola Koundakjian, Mashinka Firunts Hakopian, Armen Davoudian, Nairi Hakhverdi, Alene Terzian-Zeitounian and myself. Learn more about the conflict and how to support those affected on IALA’s website.

The Hole in the Church of My Heart
There is a hole in the church of my heart,
a fire in the palm of the young boy’s mind.
There is loss at the monument of topple
unannounced at midday unsteadiness.
There are fifteen minutes to see the birds
when my breath and its rooms escape me.
There are myths of intention circling skies
like vultures and parades of new madrigal
incantations, the letters of former words
scattering away from clusters of pages,
munitions. There is a swallowing of whole
tongues, a burying of more than just heads.
In the afternoon, these voices seek shade
to complete their inconceivable sentences.
In the evening, there is a snake in the black
garden. The children begin to chase its tail
again because there is no other play. I see
the moon through the whole of the night,
and I know, at least, that in thickening
smoke and holy gaze, I am not alone.

Vecchi sogni
Vanno veloci i giorni, scorrono sempre,
I vecchi sogni non lasciano traccia,
muniti d'un'ultima dolcezza,
come una stella cadente, se ne vanno.
Come un vago sogno
una goccia di sangue non lascia traccia,
dalla pila di memorie terrestri,
le gocce avranno l'odore delle cicatrici...
Nè i vecchi sogni saran ricordati
caduti nel vuoto grembo della dimenticanza,
come una nuvola cirro da cirro,
dispersi dal vento che soffia.
Come un vago sogno...

laptopս back up ընելու
300 file

Najwan Darwish: Who Remembers the Armenians?
I remember them
and I ride the nightmare bus with them
each night
and my coffee, this morning
I'm drinking it with them
You, murderer -
Who remembers you?
