Quote for the month of December 2015

Armenian Poetry Project -
As we approach the 10th anniversary of the Armenian Poetry Project, we pledge to continue researching and sharing the best Armenian poetry, using state of the art technology.
We remain the only website to provide audio and text RSS feeds of poems written by Armenians, as well as contemporary authors on Armenian subject matters.
We continue providing all internet surfers free access to the webpage and audio downloads 24/7/365 via RSS, Twitter and iTunes.
One thing that won't change will be APP's broad spectrum:
- gems by authors from the 19th century to the present
- introduction to out of print books
- an index of authors and countries
- experimental works by contemporary authors
- introduction of budding authors, including the APP/ASA poetry competition winners.
- different languages of expression, mostly Armenian, English or French, with translations provided whenever possible
This project is curated and produced by Lola Koundakjian in New York. To contact APP, send an email to: ArmenianPoetryProject[at]gmail[dot]com.
Please consider making a donation via Paypal.com by clicking on the button below. Your donations help maintain the audio website, buy books and replace equipment for the recordings as well as research in libraries.
This is a feedburner validator
We are proud to be ranked on the Hyetopia.com site.

Helene Pilibosian (1933-2015)
It is with great sadness that we relay the news of the death of author, editor and publisher Helene Pilibosian whose work appeared on numerous occasions in the pages of the Armenian Poetry Project. She died from complications after surgery for a brain tumor. Her son, Bob Sarkissian, will continue managing Ohan Press.
Helene was born in Boston, Massachusetts, to survivors of the Armenian Genocide. After graduating from Watertown High School, she attended Harvard University and graduated with a degree in humanities in 1960, before marrying Hagop Sarkissian. She was the first woman editor of The Armenian Mirror-Spectator. She was 82 years old and is survived by her husband, children and grandchildren.

I'M STILL RETURNING
I.
Shushi City, ash-stones.
Today the bird fliesover the ruins,
it forgets the start of the holocaust,
it recalls nothing but the wormwood;
alone, shredded in the wind,
I was free to die.
A lone night drew a new sun and life.
A child watched from the window
melding into the mother's gaze.
I beseech you
my dear friends,
roots of plans and dying trees,
turn at last into my dwelling place.
II.
Now that years have passed,I can say --
Blessed be the one, in hospital, in stadium,
in the orgies of private fantasy,
Blessed be the one living in shadows,
and the core of the blinding light,
The one with sunken hips and mighty loins,
whose grave has the measurements
of the universe,
Blessed, with and without tears in the eyes;
the divine loudspeaker turns our laughs
III.
I have yet to return to my land;
if I return I will not find me.
I shall see the silence over the country spread,
the heavy granite padlock of the door,
the green silk of the mulberry trees,
with which the land weaves its
ceremonial garb,
without the cares of those who live.
I'm still returning to my land;
Wandering with open arteries
I see the burning of the ancient soil,
the sharp cry of cities awakening,
and the dense beginnings of abandoned ivy,
turning to shadow from day to day,
covering the beginning as well as the end.
Tasting the crumbs of immortality,
I wipe away tears of hope.
Today the bird fliesover the ruins of Shushi,
no longer alone in the shredding wind.
I was free to die.
Translated by Tatul Sonentz.

Shahé Mankerian: Dear Teacher
the heart rate of a horse mirrors
the human subject touching it,
then will a cracked mirror echo
the broken heart scraping it?
*Published in Altadena Poetry Review / Anthology 2015, this poem was nominated
for the prestigious Pushcart Prize in the same year.

Shahé Mankerian: Dear Mr. President:
There was a time when my family was happy.
Father played the violin on Sundays, and sunlight
filled the living room of my memory. Mother fried
eggplants in the kitchen. She hummed like Fairuz.
My brother read books on the Arabian Nights
on the red couch. I rolled on the Persian rug
until I felt dizzy. Then a bomb exploded near the souk.
Our windowpanes shattered. The mosque collapsed
on the bridge. The violin broke from the neck.
The eggplants charred. Brother bled on the couch.
I waited for the rug to magically rise
and take flight into the night.

Lisa Carducci: Spitak
Au-delà des sinistres galaxies
Spitak était son nom
La terre a grondé dans la ville-désert
Béante, affamée
Préciptée dans les abimes secoués
Des yeux noirs dans le ténèbres
Cherchant froidement Leninakan
Attachée au piere du tumulte sismique
Eux d'ici
Eux d'ailleurs
