In the early 70's a groundbreaking album came out in France. The self titled Յարդար Hartar, the duo of Harout Bezdjian and Vicken Tarpinian proved to be the only LP collaboration of this duo.

Thank you so much for posting these Hartar samples--they are truly wonderful (seems like Armenia's answer to Simon & Garfunkel). My name is Anri Vartanov, and I'm an Armenian, born in Tbilisi, and raised in New York City. I am always trying to get in touch with my roots, since, living and growing up in America, it's easy to lose sight of where you came from. The whole project looks wonderful, and I will definitely be frequenting this blog more often.
Can you tell me a little more about the self-titled Hartar lp? I've been looking around for it, and it seems like it's out-of-print and quite a rarity (the group itself seems kind of obscure-neither of my parents have heard of them). I've found it on line going for 20 euros, which seems like a good deal... All I know is that it was pressed in France. What language are the liner notes in? Do the rest of the tracks also feature spare instrumentation (mostly guitar) like the samples you posted or is it more diversified? Again, thank you so much for your blogging--it's great to know the Armenian diaspora is alive and well, even in the blogsphere!

The HARTAR LP is out of print as it's from the mid-70's. It's a collector's item, so 20 euros seems very decent. I used to enjoy it tremendously and have listened to it again and again and AGAIN!
The liner notes were in French and Armenian. Some of the tracks had cello and flute, although HARout Bezjian and Vicken TARpinian (the main duo behind HARTAR) both played guitar. In any case they used very modern arrangements.
