Alan Whitehorn: North Avenue
In a stone cutter's efficiency,
the new North Avenue slices through historic old neighbourhoods.
In place of old three-story buildings,
new ten storey high-rises dominate,
with their stunning architecture
and sky-high prices.
Already, fashionable boutiques and trendy bars
have opened
on the ground floor.
Yet, to my surprise,
scores of families seemed to mill about.
I wondered:
'What is so fascinating about this newly completed block?',
Day after day, at about the same time,
early in the evening,
without fail,
crowds of families appeared.
It is true that the traffic-free boulevard provides safe relief
from the frighteningly swift cars.
Still, it seemed a pre-occupation with an avenue
and new shops
that I could not fully comprehend.
But tonight, I finally understand.
I was told by a politics student
that silent protesters gather on this boulevard
to show their unwillingness to accept the presidential election results.
To my amazement,
I had been amidst a protest,
and did not even know it!
What kind of political science professor am I?
It seems I need to have my prescription glasses checked.
I also need to listen to the students more.

Alan Whitehorn: Studying Genocide
The more I study genocide,
the less I feel I know.
The enormous magnitude of the suffering,
the vastness of the tragic personal accounts,
the multitude of social, economic, political and cultural causes,
and the almost uncountable number of victims.
The continuation and new iterations of the terrible deeds,
all overwhelm.
And so,
I continue the long journey into the dark night
in hopes that eventually I will understand
and find the light.

He has published five collections of poetry with Carnegie Mellon University Press, The Man in the Middle, Falling Deeply into America, About Distance, Years Later, and most recently, So I Will Till the Ground¸ poems dealing with the Armenian genocide of 1915, the author's boyhood in Alexandria, and his eventual immigration to the United States with his family. His poems have appeared in numerous publications including The American Poetry Review, The American Scholar, Boulevard, The Georgia Review, Iowa Review, Poetry, Poetry Northwest, Shenandoah, TriQuarterly, The Washington Post, The Philadelphia Inquirer, and in over 25 anthologies and textbooks. He directs the creative writing program at the University of Pennsylvania.

Lola runs the Dead Armenian Poets' Society and the Armenian Poetry Project, a blog containing text and audio clips.
Arthur Nersesian is a real New York writer. His novels are a celebration of marginal characters living in the East Village and trying to survive. Nersesian's books include The Fuck-Up, The East Village Tetralogy, Unlubricated, Chinese Takeout, Suicide Casanova, Dogrun, Manhattan Loverboy, and most recently, The Swing Voter of Staten Island. He was an editor for The Portable Lower East Side, which was an important magazine during the 1980s and early 90s. When The Fuck-Up came out in 1997, MTV Books picked it up and reprinted it in a new edition for hipsters everywhere. Soon Nersesian was no longer known only to a cabal of young bohemians on Avenue A. His work has been championed by The Village Voice and Time Out.
ABOUT GARTAL: Since December 2002, Gartal ("to read" in Armenian) has been an independent forum for both established and emerging writers of Armenian descent and/or writers dealing with Armenian themes to read their poetry, fiction, creative nonfiction and dramatic texts to the public. Coordinated by writer Nancy Agabian, Gartal brings together, via the dual acts of reading and listening, diverse Armenian constituencies, from the progressive to the traditional. A particular effort is made to give voice to Armenian stories that haven't been widely heard, including those of mixed race, various religions, different economic backgrounds, and gay and lesbian Armenians. For more information about the series, email nancyagabian@gmail.com.

Alan Whitehorn: Searching For Mother Armenia
My friend Vasken told me of his unsuccessful search.
He had looked all over,
but could not find a post card of the towering statue of Mother Armenia.
I said I knew of some good gift shops and bookstores to try.
And so, I set out on my hunt.
Last year, the cards had been aplenty.
But as I searched,
I gradually realised that this year seemed to be another story.
Wherever I looked, I could not find such a card.
Disappointed, I returned to the hotel apparently defeated.
But I would try one last place.
The new gift shop in the hotel,
athough not fully stocked,
might have it.
The young lady said she had only one postcard of Mother Armenia,
but it was in a box of 60 various cards.
I certainly didn't want that many,
and so I politely declined.
As I began to go out of the shop,
the lovely lady graciously offered me the single card.
When I offered to pay,
she generously declined.
It was her gift to me.
I, in turn, passed on the special card to the receptionist,
who, subsequently, gave the precious item to Vasken.
He was delighted that he could now send the image of Mother Armenia
to his dear friend in America.
And so,
we discover the true spirit
in many small kind deeds.

Christopher Atamian: Being
(The Armenian is he who suffers from not being an ideal Armenian)
Vahe Oshagan
We try to hold in our minds
The inability to understand
What it is that we are searching for.
East and West, Old and New
Opposites stripped of meaning
Grasping for a past that constantly eludes us.
A prophet from Edessa, a giant from Moush
Nomads sprung from desert and rock,
Traveling backwards through Cilician time
Mourning for memories
We try to suppress.
And always the yearning
For something we cannot ever reach.

Kevork Kalayjian: TAX TIPS FOR ARTISTS AND WRITERS
First you have to add all your expenses.
An expense is any outlay of cash,
or anything of monetary value
which is deemed necessary
to get you that which drives you;
to repeat the noises you hear,
to convey the feelings you live,
to express the things you imagine,
to transform the pain to laughter,
to put tears in the eye of the cynic,
to put a smile on a child's face,
that which you call inspiration.
Everything you do to achieve
inspiration, is a deductible expense;
the trip you took to Utah
to see the gas station attendant
who replaced the murdered one,
your search of your roots
in Upstate New York, Rumania,
England, France or Tasmania,
your trip to the corner drug store,
your experience of 'love' on 42nd Street,
your train ride, just to witness
the walls pass you by,
all are deductible expenses,
as long as you can document them
with your diaries and receipts.
And then of course your entrance fees
at 'T. T. The Bears' or the other place
your beer, your cigarette, your ... as long as,
it's instrumental in getting you inspired.
Once you add all your expenses
it's time to figure out your income.
An income is anything of monetary value
which you obtain in the process of
dispensing inspiration.
So you add all your royalties,
a "thank you" here, a "good work" there
sale of your book, 13 cents each,
sale of your waterbed 89 dollars,
sale of your soul to your creative impulse.
Add to your income the profit you share
from throwing yourself into the ocean
don't forget to say something about
the survival of the whales,
the concentration camps,
they are still popular, and a good source
for a quick return on investment,
like justice, truth, and the happiness pursuit,
they are the in thing, and they will bear fruit.
Don't forget the income you obtain
from your part-time work at McDonalds,
your full time trial period at the museum,
the hospital, the grocery store, the office job.
When you have all these facts and your backups,
place them all in a shoebox, and go to
the I. R. S. Taxpayer Assistance line,
or you can all come to me,
I have no problems
in counting your blessings.

Christopher Atamian: Mixobarbarians
Mixobarbarians at the gate
Carrying take-out fusion
Diasporan specials, hold the curry
More kim chi please
Divided souls, fifth columnists
Guilt-ridden BMW stick shifters
One eye eastward the other West.
Long gone are the days
Of Pledge Allegiancc to the Flag-
Now Jansenists at heart
Questioning everything
Accepting nothing
Globalized skeptics.

Christopher Atamian: Hana Spills the Milk
for Gregory Djanikian
It is nineteen eighty something
And Hana Mandlikova has Chris Evert by the throat
Up five games to zero in the third as I watch nervously
(How I wish to be truly American and blond like she
Every fiber of my body aches and wants to kiss the very ground she walks on)
“Well anyone’s better than that dyke what’s her name? Pfuh” my father
spits.”
“Martina I answer and my heart sinks. Martina is a sister
Gay as a picnic basket, pink as a rubyfruit jungle.
And slowly Chrissie comes back
Apple pie, Chevrolet, one game, now two
Ice Maiden, Queen of Cool, (a thinking man’s sex pot)
Now three games and four, that’s what she does best
And as she finally takes the lead, it all comes out:
The Marxist-Chrissie-hating-American-bashing.
The shame of it almost makes me scream
(because Hana is Czech and the Czechs are behind the iron curtain
and so are Armenians so we must love her over Chrissie
even after the tanks have rolled into Prague.
And their names are hard to pronounce too
so we must feel kinship, empathize.)
At five games to six, my father can barely contain himself.
He jumps out of his seat
As if he were at a World Cup final
Knocking over his madzoon and plate of pilaf.
“Aggh my son! My son! Look, Hana is going to spill the milk!”
I nod dutifully and smile with inner glee.
Apple pie and Chevrolet is about to win the Open again
Sputnik and the commies can go to Hades.
And before leaving the house, I cannot help but correct him:
“It’s spill the beans, dad, and cry over spilled milk.”
Pause for effect, look straight into his Anatolian eyes.
“All she did was choke-plain and simple. No metaphors or fancy
turns-of-phrases required.”
And my father looks up and stares at his long-haired American son, befuddled.

Sdepan Keshishian: The Winter Dragon
I.
Instances of stand-still time:
the bus-stop or a cashier line,
at all of which the winter dra-
gon lurks.
II.
I walked into the sun this evening... and global warming
seeped back through the contours of my eye
sockets. until Spring, I will blow out the contempt
into a tissue. For all of eternity.
III.
At an undisclosed left-hand turn,
my face barrels along gusts of wind,
its shell cracking and peeling off at the finer points.
Such is life in the ventilation system.
IV.
voyeuristic third-story pixelated vistas
above electric roller discos
-captured a tail, a trail of spines
while supermarket security reported flaming toehairs.
I crept through the stainless kitchen ceiling
and hung point five stories up and around
the brick corner, off the fire escape-
just out of range from rolling breath.

Sevana Bagdasarian: In a Restaurant
Watching you in the glass I wonder
what it is like to be so alone
and why you do not eat
but starve yourself, groveling
like a monk. You let food stand on the glass
so you stare against yourself
with great hunger,
needing to show me how you wipe saliva away
(resentfully and without hesitation)
until I see your reflection in the table, correctly,
as a man starving, not
the echo I enjoy.

Sdepan Keshishian: Swan Song
This pond is a picture
perfect of sludge
and litter.
In fact...
concrete,
its base slopes
in at angled filters
preserving what has never existed.
This poem is a picture
framed in a temperate breeze
of tax dollars.
I could hover along the glass ripples,
Resting under the shade of the willow.
I could hollow out my essence,
Folding back unto the seeping edges.
I could drain along the wall,
Flowing with the bottom current.
and as the filters approach,
I could slip out my purse,
Filling it with coins.
and after extracting
the zinc and copper,
I could harvest the wishes
While the pigeons work for more.

Swallow
Swallow, swallow,
Fine bird of spring,
Tell me, where
Are you flying, so fast?
Ah swallow, fly
To Ashtarak, where I was born
Weave your nest there
Beneath your native roof.
There, far away, I have
An ageing father who mourns,
Who waits out the days
For his only son.
When you see him
Bring him all my love;
Tell him he must sit and weep
Over his luckless son.
Tell him that I'm
Bereft and miserable,
Always crying, always wretched,
My life worn down, half gone.
For me, the day
Passes in darkness,
And no sleep comforts
My eyes at night.
Tell him I am fading
Before I ever came to bloom,
A splendid small flower
Wrenched from its native ground.
Well, pretty swallow,
Be gone, fly away fast
To the land of Armenia,
To Ashtarak, where I was born.

Evangeline Dardouni: Free Verse
November 2003
I am sad today
and I didn’t cry last night
because my heart isn’t broken and I just love my job-
“would you like to open a Jcrew charge and save 10% on your purchase-“
I’m hungry lunch is in my bag that I carried on my walk from Wickenden St.
I don’t miss NY and my home life in Providence is perfect
and I’m not responsible for my feelings
Mookie is absolutely not the cutest dog I have seen
Blank Blank Blank-
I don’t know what to write
sigh sigh
I cant believe she did that- GET OVER IT- who cares-free Write-Write-Write
Daddy-
wonder how he is-he calls that much
like I love to talk to my mother I didn’t just scratch my-
that word out wow Sandra just turned the page
she hasn’t written more than me
don’t forget to lie you honest fool
maybe this will do you some good since you’re so honest
Blank-Blank-Blank
this is typical weather for November
My Birthday is not in a month and I am not getting older and no it doesn’t suck
and neither do I –she didn’t laugh and I know why
door creeks itch on my cheek
no more lies, lies, lies
blah blah blah don’t know what to write but
I have it all figured out
period. comma, coffee-
I am not addicted to coffee
Blank-
alarm on wicker table
he called last night late and we met for drinks down the street and we had the best time
and he is attractive blank Joe, Joe, blank Joe,
I went to sleep happy and
I did not punch my pillow or scream out love
because he called and I had someone else to think about
my friends are not worried about me
Blank
When the hell is that damn timer gonna go
I hope he doesn’t call tonight or
later because then I will have to get to know
someone knew and its all too scary right
now I cant lie for shit
this was easy
flip the page good lies good lies white
elastic on my wrist my hair is clean
I am fulfilled
I am not loved
I am fearless
I am not angry
At the world
I am not talented
And have not known love
I am compassionate
I do not think I am foolish
I am sick of not sick of myself
I don’t need yoga
And I don’t need to write
Lies lies lies
Teach me what is real
or nothing at all
Blank blank
I am not jealous
I am sorry I moved to Providence
15 seconds left
too many for me
let this end

Sdepan Keshishian: untitled
It must have been the saddest man
in the world;
with the elegance of a cowboy
naked in defeat.
I sketched his silhouette in chalk
As a relief
of the pity from persons passing
I trapped him as an image
somewhat near the Louvre
Guilt free is a
glare upon a shadow.
The dogs here,
they wear berets
and turn a passing jaw
to the street
and its tragedy.
as the chalk drips
black
off my elbows.

Three Poems with a Pagan theme

Mireille Kalfayan: I rearrange my closet tonight
Click to hear the audio segment I rearrange my closet tonight read by Lola Koundakjian.
I put together the old linens
sewn in laces
by my grandmother,
fifteen years old in Turkey,
and my new linens
bought at Strouds
on one shelf, side by side,
the old and the new,
the plain and the dainty.
Where shall I sleep tonight?
My grandmother is dead
and so is the art
that personalized every item in bed.
There is a man in my bed
he is not my grandfather
my grandfather is dead
he did not love my grandmother
but he loved her laces.
My linens are from Strouds
and the man in my bed
takes my love for granted.
Mireille Kalfayan (1950-2005)

Sdepan Keshishian: wind
the canvas bleeds like
wind through my neck,
becoming of age in
insatiable pulsing, indulging in
air and poetic license.
prison sentences for
convicts and proverbs,
and proper nouns in
solitary confinement
there is music in the air! and
treble clefs caught dangling in
branches and sheet music.
and so I despise the air I
walk on and Earth is a
flowing river of paint and paper and
Jesus drowns in the deep end and
birds are bad and bees sing and
trees sting and fall.

Tina Demirdjian: Untitled
I want to wrap
myself in grapeleaves
so you can taste
my grandmother's
cooking from New York
a world not far
from your
backdoor now
you smell me
simmering in my pot
waiting for your hands
to touch my skin
rolled to keep
the flavor
inside your mouth.

Lola Koundakjian
Lola Koundakjian started writing science-fiction and poetry at an early age. After her move to the US, she worked on short translations in college but shelved her notes dedicating herself to the visual arts.
In recent years she decided to give poetry and literary journalism a shot. Several of her poems have appeared online in The Literary GROONG, and the now defunct website The Modery Story; she has contributed science and technology pieces to the Armenian International Magazine in the early 90s; served on the editorial board of the Ararat Quarterly; interviewed poets, visual artists and musicians for the Armenian Reporter & wrote commentaries for the Armenian Weekly.
Lola runs the Dead Armenian Poets’ Society, which meets on a quarterly basis, and the Armenian Poetry Project, a blog containing text and audio clips. She is a member of Pen America.
Lola is currently working on her first manuscript, a bilingual poetry book.

Evangeline Dardouni: Om
September 2001
In response to the attack on September 11, 2001
I belong to a generation
without a purpose
living in the shadow of our parents movement
desperate thirsty
willing to believe half truths
craving unity under a black moon
Shining in a scary sky of a purple haze and hydro breed
stoned by the simplicity of our arrogance
while black, white, red and blue blood
was spilled for moments of silence on hard concrete streets
that have seen drugs and murder
committed by children from broken homes-
So we chant for the sins of the stick-up-kids
Pullin’ triggers for a rush, beatin’ down doors
They crash and bust
Shots bang bodies, hit the floor
We are violent and eager, mercilessly settling a score
with guns and guts and hearts alike
while we dance around the issues
from Washington to Baghdad
because freedom bubbles a blistering sobering burn
And we cant bare to fucking look
And we cant bare to fucking try
or even begin to live without it
Without the right to speak and pray
And fuck and come
And write and live and learn and scream
And question the powers that be
And question the powers that be

Shushanik Kurghinian: I Pity You
Click here for the audio clip I Pity You written by Shushanik Kurghinian read by Shushan Avagyan
I PITY YOU
I pity you, dull-witted women,
for chasing after rouge and beauty aids,
wasting away your time without a goal,
with faces adorned for lewd sale.
For using any possible means to
always please and gratify men,
day and night obsessing only
how to set traps of jealousy.
For robbing those who love you
of their last penny earned in pain,
at times of distress, callous and low
like owls you hoot, playing the victim.
For having a subtle instinct of marketing,
selling yourselves for the highest price,
bickering endlessly over style, appearance,
a circus show of fashion rivalry.
I pity you, vain captives, whose
thoughts are lost in folds of velvet
for having minds that are utterly vacant,
for having hearts that are tainted with deceit.

Sean Depoian Casey: furniture and refuge
he had called
Rose at the church -- said he
had some extra furniture and
rugs
since his mother and grandmother died
and she said
a family halfway down
Main
needed some
Armenians from Russia
in a complex across the
laundromat -- very small mother
and tall son
stood in front of the building
to greet us
My father said something to
the man -- he didn't understand
too well
but took the armchair from him
and put it on his shoulder
we went inside the brick
building -- third floor
furniture up and
in the room -- like grandma would have
a table with crackers dried fruit
and a bowl of dried chickpeas which
dissolve once crushed
and taste sparked memories
brought me back to the
kitchen
where at dawn
she'd wake and
cook dinner in her
slippers with backs folded
down and a glass of sour tahn on the table
dad said it was an
acquired taste but
now back in Lowell
half mile from the dump
sitting on chairs without
cushions inside brick
walls with a man and
mother who couldn't
speak English
too well
and who escaped
and need furniture
or if they stayed
shelled at and
killed back when
Enver and Talaat
and when
village to village
the people
collected -- those who
didn't escape
and into the desert
marched in circles until --
tortured short burnt raped stripped
-- death granted them asylum.
Sean Depoian Casey

Sevana Bagdasarian: Carnations on Mashtots Street
I.
It all seems like cracks in sidewalks.
There is an earthworm trying to wiggle
through a sidewalk garlic press that tries to catch it
without squashing through the side.
They pass slowly, sweat drenching polyester armpits,
crosses held before a million white-laced heads, and
stumbling behind, some kid tangled up with the flag.
Truth passes by, dismal and filmy
I stand, shoo flies from my face.
II.
Shot two days ago, but his family kept him from open house,
propped on white carnations on the red velvet couch
so others could see and acknowledge glaucous blue verity.
Parades of dried apple dolls march
behind him, trying to moisten their parched faces
under the sticky heat, sweat and tears
become Sevan, one fresh water lake.
Flies circle around everyone,
one gargantuan tamzara and
he even feels it on his face, the constant
buzz around us, a huge alarm clock
following the march, ticking to wake the trees, flowers
the solder, as if to remind us that history is now
a gavel's song against an anvil
ee veree Yerusaghem, reciting oblique lines
as he goes deeper into the sultry arms of clay
the one who loves him
caressing him through several layers of antiquity
while the flies follow and sing
to wake him from hibernation.

Commentary: Another Missed Opportunity
The World Voices Festival organized by Pen American Center took place April 30-May 4th in New York City. Over 200 authors descended upon Big Apple to participate in literary events held in cultural centers all over town.
The theme of the festival this year was Public Lives/Private Lives. The forums included topics such as “Celebrating Poetry in translation”, “New Directions in Spanish Language Literature”, “Writing Genocide”, “Contemporary Poetry from the Middle-East, Asia and Beyond”, “Writing Sex and Sexuality”. The participating authors were from all the continents, including developing countries whose language of expression is NOT English and translation services were readily available.
Once again Armenians were missing from such a major world literary meeting. Last year, Eric Boghosian, one of many local Armenian-American authors, participated in an event, but he was absent this year.
As Levon Ananyan of the Writers' Union of Armenia organizes another gathering of Armenian authors for next July, we can ask ourselves why such a gathering in Yerevan. Is it for some back patting? Belly button analysis? Perhaps it would have been a better cultural gesture to send a few authors from Armenia and some others from the Diaspora to participate in world festivals such as the one organized by PEN.
Last year Chouchanik Thamrazian, a graduate student in France, participated in the Rotterdam International poetry festival. But in general Armenians are absent from the international scene. As a result, we are seldom translated, read and, yes, inexistent.
At New York’s Town Hall on April 30, the first major event of this season, Salman Rushdie, chair of the PEN World Voices festival, introduced the evening’s authors, and mentioned the empty chair on stage representing authors who couldn’t attend the festival because of imprisonment or fear of persecution.
Maybe it also represents those who are held back from their countries for lack of initiative and xenophobia.

Leonardo Alishan: Apparitions in April (Rhapsody for Gayane)
II
It's April, as all months are on my calendar,
and every day's the twenty-fourth.
And in April everything's in bloom in Utah;
tell me, love, why is my landscape always this desert?
The same bare, barren, burnt desert
with nothing in sight but a bottomless bottle
balanced on the tightrope of the horizon?
This desert is our home, my love,
with its black hills of scavenger birds
and its black seas of burning stones.
Hold my hand, granny, I'm just nine
and you are, after all, fourteen years old.

Mireille Kalfayan: Shell Searching
Click to hear the audio segment Shell Searching read by Lola Koundakjian.
She went soul searching
on the sea shore
and found shells
abandoned
by a rock
dug under footsteps
in the sand
or swept away
by the tides.
She went soul searching
in the sea shells
and found them
half-broken
at the edge
others covered
with hardened sand
or carrying inside
an animal, dead.
She went shell searching
in her soul
and found in the deep
spirals of its form
a soft touch
a silent tone
murmuring
"You're not alone."
"You're not alone."
She went soul searching
in the sea
and found sailing
beyond the horizon
the image of a child
clutching
a single shell
tightly enclosed
in her hand.

Karen Kevorkian: Care of the Body
Care of the body was sweet
besides there was nothing else.
I said are you hungry she seemed angry that she was.
If you saw what you had given years to
fish swimming on disposable placemats
you could do it
one hand tied
behind your back.
On good days we went to the Dollar Store
spill of toothbrushes, tiny porcelain dogs, red
plastic roses, bins and bins of books with blank pages
everything she now would never make good
no time to start thinking
too late for that.
Shiny bright knives of light on the sheet in the morning.
Would you like pie? It’s lemon.
Why shouldn’t I?
A crispness to kindness.

Meredith Avakian: Silence is my Enemy
Silence is my enemy
He'll try to shut me up
But no muzzle
Can silence my voice
Not a choice
Just a destiny
As fate would have it
Some were meant to speak
For those who don't
Not because they don't want to
But because they can't
Silence is my enemy
Though he'll never succeed
I like my peace and quiet
But writing’s a need
As long as the message is shared
Our people will overcome
But if it's discontinued
Our battle never will be won
That's why he’s my nemesis
Closed mouths haven't been fed
Since the genesis
Prepare to harvest the feast
Silence is my enemy
All prophets must agree
Without proper communication
What kind of world would this be?
Silence really would love
For truth to be hidden
But as long as I'm alive
He's got to be kiddin'
Silence is my enemy
But out of respect
Please hold the applause
For a moment of silence

Marianne Azakian: Walking Home
night came suddenly.
A tree in front of me
blocked my steps.
I walked toward it.
The leaves turned gold;
they glowed in the dark.
I saw a book under the tree.
It spoke to me.
“Turn back,” it said,
“Go away. You’re not
wanted here!” The lake
behind the tree glimmered.
Two people played guards.
They called me closer.
I stood still. I played deaf.
The lake came closer.
I fell in. Everything
turned murky, I guess
this was the end.
I wish I was dry tonight
and walking home.
Marianne Azakian is a member of poet-principal Shahé Mankerian’s eighth grade class at St. Gregory’s Hovsepian School in Pasadena, California. Her poem echoes William Michaelian’s “Armenian Music,” which she chose to read during the school’s annual Café Poetry Night, held on April 19, 2008.

Esther Heboyan: Round Trip I and II
ROUND TRIP I
Paris Orly Airport, January 4, 2006
airport lounge
children scream
lovers kiss
pink touches a woman’s hair and jeans
also bodies
draped like couches
are towed by grave mustaches
airport lounge
children scream
lovers kiss
errant eaters
clutching sandwiches
reel under
strips of infamous lettuce
airport lounge
children scream
lovers kiss
a father’s head
tilted
wants eye drops
only to writhe in desolation
airport lounge
children scream
lovers kiss
foggy weather in Istanbul announced
kinetic days (Hovsep handsomely a-saunter)
where you are forever
delayed
ROUND TRIP II
Istanbul airport, January 8, 2006
the windows of my world
hung low in the corner of my mind
hung shut in the prism of my dreams
hung blank in the yarn of my years
who says doors are entryways
in my case windows
a wintry city in twilight snow
and I come across my first window
joyous tidings at the siblings row
mother’s kisses tumble down below
my slippers of turquoise velvet though
were tossed onto the roof of sorrow
who says doors are entryways
in my case windows
the next noon beneath icy raindrum
towards my other window I roam
a child cringes before the awesome
a pedlar’s bear like a giant gnome
will cobblestep in cryptic boredom
my tinsel dimes for his kingdom
who says doors are entryways
in my case windows
now a porthole above the tarmac
slits the city aghast and far back
to each traveler a kismet rack
a seasonful of grinning knick-knack
one baby utters its howl exact
as if wired to a cloud’s milk-pack
the windows of my world

Haig Khatchadourian: Lament for Lebanon
in the gathering of the waters*
barricaded by distance
from the bludgeoning of war
we kept our lament strictly personal
in the mined night our pain
cradled like lost lovers
in our muted hearts
the indifferent world looked on
as little children
forgotten by man forsaken by God
were crucified in the rubble of disemboweled
buildings
as fractured bodies twisted limbs
torn from the erstwhile living
softcarpeted the festering streets
with offal and omnivorous snarling flames
an arrogant invader proud in arms
raped a people desecrated a country
posing as savior
hailed by those who had professed
blood is thicker than water
yet we too were fully implicated
secure from the war’s blind blows
dug-in in the deep trenches of unremembering
time
our hands and faces too were smeared
with unresisting blood
we too went on our daily living
we too did nothing to stop the carnage
by the mediterranean’s bitter waters
the women of tyre and beirut wept
for their children
and would not be comforted

Inside the bellies
of petroleum tankers
live engine room monsters
they roar
for men
$
young men
$
able men
$
boil their blood
sizzle their veins
grill their brains
fry their feet stoke their ears
broil their legs
bake their teeth
stew their tongues
sear their souls
devour them whole
all day— all night long
young men, able men, giving their all
for the engine room monsters as they roar “MORE!”
Copyright SOFIA KONTOGEORGE KOSTOS, 2005.
To secure oil interests, the price of petroleum continues to be paid through lives destroyed by war in Iraq and Genocides in Darfur. The first victims were the Armenians, the Assyrians, and the Greeks—the millions of the original Christian inhabitants of Asia Minor (now Turkey).

Apollo: Live For You
Click here for the audio clip
Live for You read by Apollo
Your history.....your childhood.....
The dreams that once lingered onto the cave walls of your thoughts...
The blind bats that flew away using nothing but sound and feel....
The ones that never made it back....The ones that were forgotten...
I live for you....
The child that died inside all of us....The tears that were cried inside....all of us....The drops that landed on our lips, as if to remind us what it tastes like to feel pain..To quench our inner hungers that have been yearning to feel.... something....Anything...I live for you...
For all of those who haven't learned that regret doesn't make any logical sense....For the wings that soared without realizing their butterfly effect served a purpose that's too complicated to ever be understood...But we have faith in it...
I live for you.
For the writer who put down the pen...And never wrote again.....For all of them who kept their thoughts as prisoners to the hearts...I live for you... For the women who are raising their children and having to be both heads of the household....When I'm out cold...I live for you.
For that person in your family that you never had a chance to say goodbye too....but you know that when you pray, their memories vibrate inside you...When you need somebody to cry to....I'll live for you....For that old man who waited his whole life to tell a woman that he loved her...And when he finally got to, it was at her tombstone.....Rusty.....I live for you.......
For the ignorant power-hungry people who have yet to realize that money...is just one form of energy....But love....is all forms of energy.......I live for you.. A beautiful mind is an ugly thing to waste.....An ugly mind is a beautiful thing to replace....Let yourself go....Don't tell yourself that you're letting yourself go......Just....let....yourself....go....Like you dont have any control of having control...
Hold on to the hope that music will go back to it's roots, and stop using the mainstream as an excuse. Every time you grab that microphone, you speak for all the silenced voices...The millions in the Armenian Genocide....The Jewish genocide...The African genocide....For all the children in Darfur...I live for you...
And if each one of my poems could turn into a star, I would write until the sky is filled with enough light to guide you towards the sun....I'll shine for you.........For the people who are paralyzed physically....For the people who are paralyzed emotionally......When you stop giving a damn about everything in the world....I'll care for you....For the people who have lost all hope and inspiration....Having a one-way conversation with a God who's never returned their phone calls....I'll pray for you.....Knowing that everything happens for a reason..a reason that takes more than one lifetime to understand....So as I grab your hand....and pull you off the bridge that you've spent your whole life creating....I'll write for you...
And if each breathe I don't take is a breathe that could've been used to create....I'll die for you...And once you learn to appreciate your life and make the best out of what you have....I'll no longer have to live for somebody who's living for themselves...

Siroun Kaloustian: 3:16am
I like being awake
late
into the early hours
Here
I hear
dreams of the world
My ears smile.
Listen,
Marashtsi girls giggling
conversations with whales
birth tells its secret
shhhh…(they don’t know I have come—found a door)
this door is a leaky faucet ..
..
..
drip,
drip,
a few more dreams
drop
forming a puddle
Maybe
tomorrow
it’ll be deep enough for me to dive in and fish out my heart.

Ara Arzumanian: A Memory of Smoke
The inside of my skull still swims in the memory of smoke
Blue, dense, brown, white and ashen clouds of black smoke
The smell of wood and metal engulfed in flame
The smell of burning engine oil
The algorithmic undulations of the poisonous black ether produced by
burning plastic
The odor of water dousing those flames; the sound of crackling wood
The unmistakable odor of burning human hair
The catastrophic smell of singed human flesh.
Some bullets pass through the body with such great velocity, that the
blood actually boils at the point of contact
A kitchen painstakingly cleaned by strong and proud hands
The hand embroidered doily which graced the breakfast table where a
sugar bowl was forever present next to the bowl of walnuts and raisins
The high chair in which she fed her son a soft boiled egg with butter
and salt each morning
The splatter of blood on the wall
The drips of it upon the ground
The startled expression upon her face
The final odor she knew in this world—that of her own singed flesh,
punctured kidney, and burnt liver
The collapse
to the yellow tile floor
The dissipation of the smoke exhaled by a disastrous revolver.
The yellow, holy smoke of incense burning at her funeral
The inconsolable despair of a motherless two-year-old boy.

Evangeline Dardouni: Definition of Aurora
Summer 2005
-Love showed up out of nowhere
committed from creation
wanted in dreams
I dreamed in winter. Waiting,
for warm nights,
knotted legs in
love, melted.
Into skin so foreign and good,
It’s my own-

Karen Kevorkian: Soft Music
the empty, very empty, great empty, and all empty
Highest Yoga Tantra
Lowspread the live oak leaves rattle
money in a cup. Fat whitewing doves
teeter on the power line. Soft music
having severed any relationship with
the body, she does not think
“my body”
a fingernail ringing, four times,
a crystal rim,
a hesitation between
the first two calls and the last
a middle place
lasting seven days but these days
are very long
millions of years
what absurdity
Grapelike sparrows in the eaves
soft racheting wings. Sweet fuss.
Usually no one in the room.
The emaciated woman
hairless gaunt woman
lift of shoulderblades wings’ absence
and after death a hungry ghost exits
from the mouth. If it is to be born
a god of desire,
the navel
Bruised (needle scars) flesh puckers
breeze quivering over smooth water
rainpocked sand
She raises a skinny arm to feel fog-hovering new hair
pats her head carefully
a god of magic
the ear
Knees give way. One hand steadies on the wall.
the other feeling what must be hair. A white mist
like wet dark limbs around them green haze collects.
a human exits from the eye
Are the leaves solid black?
No the sky’s grimed gauze
tunnels into the room where TV bodies
lie oddly angled in blooming loud fire
deafness within deafness
only smoke
fireflies appearing
in the dark
she does not know
what to call them
she cannot understand
what is rough what is smooth
Silken reassurance this tangle
the final diving into deep water
very clear emptiness
mind of the clear light
black and silklike sweet
licorice mucky
earth savor

Evangeline Dardouni: Confession
August 2003
It will be okay
You don’t have to suffer
forever, in the abyss seeking redemption.
Just be gentle,
Life will happen anyway,
And the warm translucent stones
of God’s tears
will shower over you.
Over the desolate country and endless land
over the certainties and contradictions of life.
And the truths of the innocent new breath
are finally coming home.
Whatever your name,
no matter how unspoken, the love you want is possible.
Singing to you like a confession,
blunt and enthused
Again and again, saving your song
in the safe place you’ve made.
