Nowadays,
by killing
human beings.
What a pity
we can not eat,
human meat.

I was used to
misfortune so much
that I hugged it
to my chest
so closely that
good luck hastily-
jealously came
toward me.
But of what use was luck to me?
I was in love with
mascara eyes and
eyebrows of misfortune...

They told us the soldiers were coming.
My father said we shouldn't worry.
The priest said a prayer. We kissed the holy cross. He blessed us.
Old and young; we prayed in silence.
My little sister cried.
We heard them coming.
There were so many of them marching in the streets that the walls of the house shook from the ground.
The door bursts open. They are inside.
They drag my father out of the house. They tie his arms behind his back.
They round up all the strong men of our village. All have their arms tied behind their backs… We never see them again.
They say we are being relocated.
I did not know that word. Relocated.
They tell us to move forward.
Forward... Always forward...
I manage to hide a silver spoon in my pocket.
We start walking down the road.
The men walk in front.
Women carry the children.
No one speaks.
Old people begin trailing behind.
When the sun finally comes up, I see a long line of people stretched all the way to the sky.
Forward... always forward.
A young man breaks free from the group and runs towards the field. They shoot him in the back. We can see his white shirt on the dry land like a flowering bush.
I see an old woman and an old man sit side by side under the shadow of a tree... They refuse to stand up again... The soldiers shoot them.
Soldiers take a young woman behind the bushes. They laugh. She screams. She never comes out.
The baby in a young woman's arms cries for milk.
Our feet bleed.
The baby keeps crying for milk.
When we pass by the villages people shut their windows. Others throw rocks at us.
The baby in the young woman’s arms stops crying. She keeps carrying him.
The sky, dark with tears.
The road, silent with shame.
The road never stops. The walk never ends.
The man beside me trips and falls.
One after another they keep falling to the ground.
We stop burying the dead. They are too many.
We stop crying for the dead. They are too many.
Forward...always forward.
When my little sister falls, I don't stop for her.
As soon as they drop to the ground vultures start pecking at them. Sometimes they are still alive.
When I look behind I see white patches strewn along the road. One of them is my little sister.
When our feet can’t carry us anymore we crawl on our hands and knees.
We can’t stop walking.
We keep moving.
Forward…always forward.
One of us has to stay alive.
One of us has to remember.
One of us has to speak the truth.

We see these pearls walking in the morning
Know who they are
But we know
The true conquerors jasper landscape
One “Beastie” after another
Papa
Shifting sands
Bottles and
Sun and Earth
I am proud of my zero
The box-cars rushing through me in succession
I am Jean Valjean
A Challenge to any exterior
When my loves says “Garbanzo”
You harbour a hag but it is beautiful that you do
It is what makes your name stand out
It is what makes you beautiful
This pristine brilliance
O Camino a Los Cerros!
I take my stride
My legs are giant totem poles
That cause a whirlwind wherever I go wherever I have been
O feathers of Youth!I will not leave you orphans
I will come to you again and again
O gyrating feathers of Youth!

for Allen Ginsberg
The jewel of the leaves I see
Reflected on the butcher’s glassy showcase
Before which
I stand like an Egyptian totem with
Hands folded
The little girl holds the ukelélé
As an immolation
To the vanquished sun
And to the shadows
And the little Negro child learns and calls
Me a shadow as I pass

Two kids, hair blonde, eyes grey,
Mere children of a farmer playing in the hay.
Not an ounce of evil in their heart,
Nor deceit or hate,
But that could not protect them from their morbid fate.
Alas came the horde of darkness from the east,
Philistine, barbaric, revolting beasts.
Envious of the local aesthetic taste,
They plundered, looted, raped, and killed,
And when they decided that enough blood had spilled,
They took one of the infants
And continued their path of senseless war in haste.
The remaining child arose from the ashes
An orphan, rendered homeless, not knowing why
His people had to die…
And grow up he did, amongst the survivors,
Since day one remembering the evils of his rivals,
And dedicated his life to eternal hate.
The other child grew up with the nomads,
With their customs, their women, their religion, their race,
And slowly and gradually began to change his face,
The memories of his childhood have forever left his head,
And at the age of twenty one he rode back to the country side
And struck his brother dead.

Call. Surely someone will hear.
The trees blossom in the spring.
The rivers flood.
Call. Someone will hear.
The birds that went south return
bearing the sun on their backs.
And dreams return, and repeat themselves.
Call. Someone surely will hear.
All roads that seem to stretch forever
end in dreams of home.
All yearning reaches into the setting sun.
Call. Surely someone will hear.
English transtion by Diana Der-Hovanessian. From Anthology of Armenian Poetry. Columbia University Press, 1978.
Appelle ! Quelqu’un va sûrement entendre.
Les arbres fleurissent au printemps,
Les rivières s’écoulent.
Appelle ! Quelqu’un va entendre.
Les oiseaux partis au sud reviennent
Portant le soleil sur leur dos.
Et les rêves reviennent, et se répètent.
Appelle !

FORCE MY WAY THROUGH, I’M GOING TO KARS
Excuse me, my flowers,
and dawns of my life, excuse me,
flowery valleys of my childhood
and pretty birds of the sky,
excuse me all of you,
for I don’t sing for you,
for I don’t sing about roses and violets,
for none of you is inspiring me right now,
for I haven’t time to enjoy by nature,
Love has died deep in my heart,
the stars and the moon have got dark as hell,
And I can’t sing about you, praise the nature,
for my thought has started its journey,
it’s going to Masis1, Sipan2 and Maruta3,
Our great mountains, our lake Vana,
Our cities Kars, Adana,
Bitlis, Erzrum and Erznka,
Moosh and Sasoon,
where the heavenly manna comes
down on the trees,
Don’t be hurt from my words,
my moon and stars, my pretty flowers,
I have no time for you today,
‘cause my thought has started on journey,
it’s going on foot,
and barefooted like pilgrim,
it’s going to our abandoned churches and castles,
to the ruined temple Ani,
and all these places that were our own,
but ruined now and destroyed,
‘cause the Turks have broken every treasure we’d had,
Even our cross-stones and the Holy Bible,
our books, handwritings and manuscripts,
And burned all my people –
young and adult,
mother and child,
The Turk bastards have killed my people
without any conscience,
the knavish and insidious beasts
have torn my nation to pieces,
Excuse me, my flowers,
For I can’t praise you today,
‘cause my nation has become wanderer,
‘cause we’d been plundered heavily,
‘cause we stayed face to face with death,
but we survived at least,
we became a rock against storms,
we struggled hardly,
we became a river and overflowed,
we became seeds and have been sowed
all over the world,
we were occurred by ruins and homelessness,
we became the conscience of all the world,
of the blind world,
and we were silent
and we are still silent,
for so, so long time…
***
Now,
how can a poet sing joyously
about spring and its miracles,
when the blood is flowing from her heart?
Excuse me, my flowers,
and my fresh-scented dawns, excuse me,
flowery valleys and pretty birds of the sky,
cool waters coming down the mounts, excuse me…
Excuse me, my snowdrops,
you were inspiring me since my childhood,
and I was going crazy every time
while you were smiling with your blue eyes,
Excuse me now, I haven’t time even for you,
‘cause my thought has started journey,
and the blood is flowing from my heart,
my longing heart has packed its bags today
and started on its way,
it’s going to our lands,
it’s going our home,
it’s going to be the owner of the fields
of my grandfather Balo,
to pick our fruits, to enjoy by harvest,
to keep the fire in the hearth going…
Force my way through,
I’m going to Kars,
I’m going home,
I’m going to face the fight alone…

The past has spidery fingers
with names such as Samast.
The rancid hate that lingers
turns rage into disgust.
But then, in Istanbul
a hundred thousand link
their arms, defy the rule,
and shout "We're all Hrant Dink!"

The tip of a blade of grass
Fluttering in the gentle breeze.
It’s like the tip of a conductor’s baton.
Now imagine all the tips of grass fluttering
in an entire field.
Imagine the different sounds of music.
Just imagine.

We mark a patch of early snow
with little feet
quite deep and neat.
There's not a place we wish to go
with sheets of chill
upon a hill.
There's not a cure our steps will show
in any track
you follow back.
There's not a thing we wish to know
with little feet
quite deep and neat.

Nothing was an heirloom. We had none,
But a cause cherished like a vintage gun
Hung there: why goatherds in a mountain town
Had dug pits by the roadside and lain down.
I can’t rest, even as a great grandson,
When young Turks tell me what was done is done.
Our women--raped not just by anyone.
We never called the couch an ottoman.

In Memoriam: Vaughn Bedros Poochigian, 1909—1996
From Midway over plains, divides, and basins
On smaller jets destined for shorter flights
I reached the Valley, where, at your last rites,
Three priests agreed: you had grown grapes for raisins
And never grumbled because family lines
Branch always into further mouths-to-feed.
(Old women in whispers talked about my seed.)
Soon we had sold the orchard, cleared the vines.
You died too early to have dubbed me “crazy”—
An honorific title in our tribe.
True to your memory, I have crossed the hazy
Land of the Lost Wine (the enchanted one)
And smuggled out this cutting as a bribe,
A scion for you, grandpa, if no son.

In my memory
you are
not a prairie dream
revisited
not a distorted shoot
from early spring
not a purple-stoned sceptre
nor the remnants of a blind man's dog
but a veil I wear
when blood scratches
my brain searching
for cradle
the sound of wedding drums
approaching
the wait of moon brides
unravished bodies
willing sweet sable
to a stride.

I am not your nation's capital.
I am not fiscally responsible.
Nor am I delighted to meet you.
But I'd like to start flossing.
I'd like to throw arrows at Utah.
I'd like to sign my name here.
I'd like to tell an ant colony
to pack up and go home.
I'd like to sew your mouth shut.
I'd like to wave a flag on some
mountain overlooking some sea.
Here's what's going to happen:
I'm filling my car with gasoline
just to drive over these stones.

That night in desert places
by three lime trees,
vanilla malted vines --
white five-petalled
blossoms on brown walls;
we slept,
a courtyard oasis.
Under the moon
the cock was quiet
from twelve to four;
growing full,
in limelight then,
with boasts of distant hens.
Leaving, we forgot
three oranges on the
still mossy fountain's
cracked rim.
In the city
we placed three oranges
on the roof ledge,
loved, forgot.
When I left
avoiding morning
the cabman whispered;
the breeze that just
touches the face
is called the naseem.

The wheat is lifted, bent back like a trapdoor,
a searching, sweet reek of the past:
the paths--wet sticks poked into a fire--
hunter's bread, howl of flowers,
the earth red where the angelus bell is buried:
bright sorrow, light rattling
on the crooked stairway to the cloud-orchard,
that wheat, dependable chaos, ripening,
(stem rust, cutworms, 20 bushels an acre?),
that wheat, held open, scold
of color--whooping it up to no avail--
one torment like any other,
the body (a century of dark cellars,
all the hours huddled at the end of the day)
remembers, deepens, what is left
in dreams, desperate in an ashy intention,
that wheat, a warding off (time, pout of desire),
gruff yellow, molten oddities,
finished things, denials--the crows departing,
one field like any other.

"Until I feared I would lose it, I never loved to read. One does not love breathing."
—Harper Lee, "To Kill a Mockingbird"
The American Library Association would like to remind us that many of us live in a world where intellectual freedom does not exist.
Minds lesser than most would like you to believe that for your OWN GOOD, you shouldn't be reading certain books, even if you are 18 or older, and can very easily make up your own mind.
Yes, it's okay to drive, vote, and join the army, but PLEASE don't read that book, it could be dangerous.
The question remains, how and why are these books dangerous and for whom?

First there is the
need to be a poet
to bear witness through words
But your poems are only words
Then one day you find you have made
the earth shift to reveal
with frightening clarity
some mystery ancient and
human unfolding through you
Slowly, you begin to understand this desire
your words disappear to reveal the poem
But you are Armenian
absence and longing
are your heritage
you spot Varoujan dancing in Harvard Square
you bump into Siamanto at Wordsworth's bookstore
you receive a phone call; Tourian is lost in Watertown
you try to understand Armenia
you write Armenia
Armenia
In the time warp called America
you mythologize the dead land
find yourself stranded between fable and reality
In your life
love and genocide
gather your images and desires
use English like a native
make you an Armenian poet

We must design the destruction of ignorance and misery,
and establish the reign of reason, intelligence and happiness.
–Robert Owen, 1817
The bricks pale in a private weather,
hewn timbers kick in their sleep, mutter
about Owenites, the utopians who tiptoed
out of paradise with frayed theories,
left the ideal rooms vacant, the grass knotted.
In the city in the wilderness
they learned there is no clean start,
no simple day without the print of pride,
secrets, stones weighing the sun's light,
bet-hedgers uncooping black doves.
When the text of the sublime
is opened to the exact middle, pages peeled
evenly outward, the wind loses its way
in the routine intricacies
of the absolute cornfield, the unsure
surfaces rinsed silver,
the whammy put on desire,
the vision assayed by reckless endurance.
In practice the smaller portions appear.
Moderation, sharing, the sparse trophies
of communal experiment are old luck lost
in gain, corners meting out damask.
In a country that ignores its history,
bolts a door behind the present,
preferring the seductive touch of myth,
there is no fame for the faultless average,
diligent poverty, evangels of duty,
the double-clutch of the spirit.
Yet, some, escapees, from the Disneyland gulag,
share the quiet roads with farmers,
stop at this village to repeat questions,
deliver the gift of conscience,
nests of shade settling on children's shoulders.
Snails spin on the green axle of gardens.
The day cools, glides to a close,
Aligns illegible stars.
Possums cross the dead orchard where darkness
is a relic moved from place to place,
handed down, like suffering,
to the smaller integrities, plumed grass,
scaly stones, the blue throats of bushes.
The possums enter the cornfield to splurge.
The millennium means nothing to them.

Sometimes, I dream about my mother’s breasts.
In my dreams, my mother is naked
and nursing me
While she eats pomegranate seeds,
While she eats sunflower seeds.
Sometimes, I dream only of one breast.
In my dream, my mother only has one
and with it, she smothers me and my cries.
The pomegranate seeds like bloody cysts stain her chest.
The sunflower seeds like dried tears fall to her feet.
The poem was recently published in the Fall 2008 edition of
The Apple Valley Review.
COMIENZO
y me acuna
mientras come semillas de granada,
mientras come semillas de girasol.

We look at Goethe,
and Schiller,
huge bronze statues
in the park,
and we think,
someday we'll be like them --
you Goethe and I Schiller.
Then through narrow park lanes
we crawl along,
solemn and confident,
eloquent and witty,
ignoring the boys that pass on bicycles
and the girls in shorts
carrying tennis rackets.
Volviéndonos grandes
Traducción de Carolina Contino
Observamos a Goethe,
y Schiller,
enormes estatuas de bronce
en el parque,
y pensamos,
algún día seremos como ellos,
tú Goethe y yo Schiller.
Luego, por los angostos caminos del parque
nos arrastramos lentamente,
solemnes y confidentes,
ingeniosos y elocuentes,

Restless,
I pace my little room,
swing the windows and look out.
The trees on the hill are tossing madly;
I watch them,
I am thrilled at their madness.
I turn to my bare room satisfied.

Years drift like ships
in a wind they cannot control
Our last meeting pulses
from the shallows of a darkened room
balances on the tip
of my tongue
My feet look for a way back
into that world where we began
slowly among childhood's
to measure how close our lives
haunted the same streets in different cities
our alphabets and dreams rooted
in the whitened wrinkles of Ararat
or traced into the dust of the San Joaquin
where we stopped the hands of the clock
at sunset and rolled out of our shadows
awakening the lost voices
of ancestors in a land
that was not ours to understand
Here among vineyards of green wisdom
we found their forgotten names
one by one
becoming our own

On THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 4, 2008, a young poet posted this in his blog:
T.U.R.N.I.P.S
Shout Out to the Other Real Poets
I most recently read a few poems from an Armenian Poetry spot here on blogger. com. I really enjoyed the poems because they all have true life account of what happens in the Armenian culture. I also enjoyed the fact that the poems are all very, very visual and paint very clear pictures of what exactly is being described. The reason I was drawn to these poems is because they are all very similar to the poems that I am writing, in that they describe the perspective and point of view of a culture. My culture for example is that of an African American college student who is working to break a stereotype and establish himself as a writer. On the other side of that, The Armenian Poetry movement is one that is bringing to the forefront works of writing that the world may have never have even decided to look into. I encourage anyone that is interested and would like to check out this poetry to do so.
Many thanks C.S. Griffin. Keep on writing!!

Born in the season of rivers
Her heart burns
but is never consumed
Her eyes go on for miles
over white mountains and blue deserts
leaving only a blur
of twilight where a star
in an open field
prepares to be born

Home is where my music
And my notepad
And my art reside.
Therefore I always travel with a piece of home;
Whether it’s my iPod with music
Or a stone in my pocket
Or a photo of my loved one in my wallet
Or my thoughts…

There are maps
the body looks for
where it begins
to keep secrets,
false names.
The hands curl into stones,
sleep alone under the dust
of darkened roads.
At these moments --
the body inhales itself.
Fear stands in the mirror,
teeth white as the moon.
Nightly, shadows
knock at the window
until the window opens
to let them in.

Dressed in fezzes and uniforms,
moustaches thicker than their lips,
sinewy arms crossed in proud distinction,
they sit like pashas at a table,
staring straight at the lens,
while two male heads lie on platters,
spattered with blood. The camera
doesn’t lie, its details
to be passed on to centuries,
living proof that gets in the way
of cold denials. A moment
defining what they did in their spare time,
before dreaming up reasons to round off
genocide to zero.

Father I have your rug.
I sit on it now -- not as you
did, but on a chair before
a table, and write.
It is all that is left of
Adana, of us, of what we
share in this life, in
your death.
In my nomad head I carry all
the things of my life,
determined by memory and love.
And on certain distant nights,
I take them one by one.
And count.
And place them on your rug.

History’s Twists: The Armenians by Helene Pilibosian, Ohan Press, 171 Maplewood St. Watertown, MA 02472-1324, 2008, 96 pp., $18 postpaid.
Helene Pilibosian is a unique, fine poet, a woman overflowing with her Armenian heritage which she celebrates throughout this book of poems, weaving the ancient history, the not so distant history of the early 1900s and the current reflections of the many transplanted Armenians who have settled in many countries after the Diaspora that followed the 1915 horror on her colorful and richly detailed loom. She has a profound respect and understanding of the place of Armenia in world history and for those readers whose knowledge of that country's changing geography and relationship to the great kingdoms and conquerors, Pilibosian has a technique that allows entry into this under-appreciated past.
But what makes Pilibosian's poetry most interesting and seductive is her interlacing the immigrant experience with the voices of 'those who stayed behind'. Some of these poems, written in a narrative style with a refreshing respect for language as it describes and plays with itself in rhyme, address contemporary issues peculiar to Armenians while others step into the universal arena, a space enlightened by a mind whose focus and devotion has been honed by a respect for roots.
We are never quite sure how many of Helene Pilibosian's characters are real and how many are convenient creations for poetic dialogue. She can be very first person personal: 'I spilled my American hopes/of many afternoons/on the pavements that wore my life./An Armenian daughter doesn't forget/the name that gets her born,/ the long curls that were shorn.' She can be a resource for history: 'Oral history is a vagrant goat...Orphans were necessary for survival./ America and Europe were the pills....Remembrance is the epitaph/for ghosts of humble glory.'
She pays homage to some of the great Armenian artists as in 'Letter to Khachaturian on his 100th Birthday, 2003', to painter Arshile Gorky, Mihran Manoukian, Aivazovsky and others. But for this reader she is most effective in her longer, rapturously beautiful poem 'Letter to Nazeli', an exchange of thoughts and feelings between one who stayed in the homeland and one whose physical presence is in a foreign Gilead.
Doubtless with the publication of this book Helene Pilibosian's importance as a contemporary poet will be more widely recognized. She deserves her special place in the pantheon of humanistic artists.

Friend,
you repeat yourself
as if you are haunted
by a voice
that bows
only to its past.
Yes,
my ancestors
often whisper
meanings to me,
but I seldom
listen.
